Single Angle & Double Angle Cutters

Angle cutters are milling cutters with the cutting face angled with respect to the axis of rotation. There are many types of angle cutters. Examples include single angle cutters and double angle cutters. Single angle cutters are those which have teeth on the conical or angular face of the cutter and also on the large flat side. A double angle cutter has V- shaped teeth with both conical surfaces at an angle to their end faces. Angle iron cutters are cutting tools used for cutting various kinds of metals. Other angle cutters are commonly available. 

Angle cutters are available with various angles ranging from 10° to 45°. The specifications of an angle iron cutter include the angle, diameter, and weight. Angle cutters include a 45° lead angle roughing cutter, 30° lead angle cutter, 30° lead angle roughing cutter, and 30° lead angle finishing and semi-finishing cutters. These angle cutters use 2-sided hexagonal inserts with 12 true cutting edges. Double negative geometry provides strength needed for high metal removal rates. Their diameters range from 3-12 in. and 80-315 mm. A milling cutter is also available in diameters from 3 inches to 12 inches and 80 mm to 315 mm metric diameters. The 45° lead angle cutter is the first choice for roughing operations because of its high strength while the 30° lead angle roughing cutter offers an alternative for reducing breakout and also accepts wiper inserts. Angle iron cutters have special blades that have a 1\8 inch thick angle. Angle cutters are designed and manufactured to meet most industry specifications.

Dove Tail Cutter

Dovetail cutters are specialized tools for cutting a dovetail angled grooves into a workpiece and are used for fitting or joining parts. They may be of solid construction, or with holders and inserts. 

Dovetail cutters can be used with a number of end or tip geometry options, including square end, ball nose, radius tip, and chamfer tip.  Square end tip geometry for dovetail cutters have a square or straight end that features no radius, chamfer, or other finish. Ball nose dovetail cutter tips have a “ball nose” whose radius is one half of the cutter diameter. This type of dovetail cutter tip is useful for machining female semicircle grooves of radii.

Other ends and tips for dovetail cutters include radius or chamfer-tipped. Radius-tipped dovetail cutter ends are straight flutes with ground radius on the very tip. Chamfer tip ends feature an angled section of the side or the end. These tips produce an angled cut of chamfered edge on a workpiece.

When selecting a dovetail cutter, consideration must be made to the desired finish type. There are typically two finish options: roughing / hogging and finishing. Roughing and hogging cutters are designed so that the machine geometry, flutes, and materials can be used for rapid and heavy material removal. They are typically used to machine workpieces close to the desired finishing dimensions, where a finishing dovetail cutter takes over and produces closer tolerances and higher-quality surface finish. 

Other considerations for dovetail cutters include cutter size and construction criteria. Size considerations for dovetail cutters relate to the cutting diameter, shank or arbor diameter, flute or cutting edge length, overall tool length, and radius dimension and angle when applicable.

The material of the dovetail cutter is important for understanding the level of cutting the machine can handle. Materials like carbide, cobalt, and diamond are hard and can be used in high-speed applications, whereas materials like steel are used for general metal machining. Other material options for dovetail cutters include micro grain carbide, which is used most-often in surface finishing applications, and ceramic.

Coatings for dovetail cutter machines are important considerations as well, as they can provide additional production against corrosion and abrasion, increase the tool’s hardness, provide lubrication and smoothness assistance, and improve the overall lifetime of the tool.
