ENGINE ROOM TEAM MANAGEMENT

This course is practical and consists mainly of a series of exercises performed on ENGINE SIMULATOR & SHIP HANDLING SIMULATOR. Some class room lectures are included to provide the necessary theoretical background for exercises.

Exercises are controlled by an instructor and, initially allow the trainees to be familiar with the equipment, the controls and the instrumentation provided by the simulator.

The exercises increase in complexity as the course progresses and as trainees become familiar with the manoeuvring characteristics of the ship model and its response to the engine and helm in various conditions. Equipment failure or malfunction may be introduced during an exercise to afford trainees practice in taking emergency remedial action.

During exercises, trainees are expected to make use of the effective engine room procedures, to comply with as set out in chapter VIII Section - B of the STCW 95. They will assume different roles of the engine room watch keeping team, the roles being rotated to allow each trainee an opportunity to act as Chief Engineer for some of the exercises. Each exercise will be preceded by a session for briefing and planning and be followed by a group discussion, led by the instructor, to analyze the actions and decisions of the trainee. The trainees who successfully complete this course will have gained experience in handling engines under various conditions and will make a more effective contribution to the engine room team during ship maneuvering.
