from hindus puranas it is lern that it is a devine musical instrument as lord krishna has it. The exact origin is not known but found during buddhist and other periods. Ayyan thiruvalluvar has mentioned in his thirukkural as ?kulal inithu,yall inithu ??that is flute the sweetest yaal the sweetest. Yaal was as like veena a string instrument. Flute was in use during first sangam literature. Though these literatures gave the importance of flutes in music at early years it was used as an accompanying instrument for vocal.
