  • Industrial energy efficiency is one of the most effective means of reducing Greenhouse Gases(GHG) or carbon emissions. Higher energy efficiency in the Industrial sector enables decoupling of economic growth from a proportionate and steep increase in energy consumption while mitigating its direct environmental impact. Further, reducing energy intensity (energy consumption per unit of Gross Domestic Product-GDP) improves business competitiveness. Industrial sector alone is responsible for more than one-third of global primary energy consumption and energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2)emissions. The Perform Achieve Trade (PAT) scheme launched in 2012 is aimed at reducing energy consumption in specified industrial units, with high energy consumption. PAT is a market-oriented mechanism. The scheme is implemented by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy, Government of India.

  • The building sector accounts for over 30% of the total electricity consumed in India. 75% of the buildings expected to exist in India in 2030 have not been built. This corresponding increase in the share of electricity consumed by buildings will have a major impact on the energy requirement of the country. Buildings are estimated to waste between 10-30% of their energy due to operational, system, and envelope in efficiencies. Policymakers have been prioritizing the large commercial sector over India’s low-mid-end commercial market and residential building sectors. However, market forces such as falling cost of energy efficient and renewable materials and the growing demand and awareness among home owners are helping builders overcome the perception that energy efficient buildings are expensive. Legislative proposals are being considered to provide builders tax cuts and other concessions for constructing energy efficient buildings. This is expected to overcome the hurdle of home builders not having sufficient incentives to construct energy efficient buildings, since the benefits will be released by homeowners. Among recent developments in the sector, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency recently launching their star labelling scheme for hospitals, which was facilitated by AEEE
