Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production – WRAP is an independent non-profit organization, dedicated to the promotion and certification of lawful, humane and ethical manufacturing throughout the world. The objective of the Wordwide Responsible Accredited Production program is to independently monitor and certify compliance with a set of social compliance standards, ensuring that a given factory produces goods under lawful, humane, and ethical conditions. The WRAP program is the world’s largest facility certification program mainly focused on the apparel, footwear and sewn products sectors.

 

Facilities receive a certification of six months to one year based on compliance with the 12 WRAP Principles.

WRAP is an independent, non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion and certification of lawful, humane, and ethical manufacturing throughout the world.

Set up in 2000, WRAP is the world’s largest labor and environmental certification program for labor-intensive consumer products manufacturing and processing. WRAP is supported by 25 international trade associations, including the International Apparel Federation, which represents 36 national associations and over 150,000 individual companies.

The WRAP principles cover basic standards that address labor practices, factory conditions, and environmental and customs compliance. They consist of 12 elements:

  • Prohibition of harassment or abuse
  • Compensation and benefits

The Sedex Member Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA) has been developed by the Sedex Associate Auditor Group (AAG), through multi- stakeholder consultation, to provide a best practice reference framework for social auditing and reporting. It draws from practices defined by Sedex members and by the Global Social Compliance Programme The Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) is a not-for-profit, membership organisation for businesses that are committed to the continuous improvement of ethical performance within their supply chains. Sedex was founded in 2001 by a group of UK retailers. Their goal was to drive convergence in social audit standards and monitoring practices. Sedex aims to ease the auditing burden on suppliers by sharing reports, and driving improvements in supply chain Labour standards.

 

How you benefit

In the certification industry, various types of social audits are performed such as BSCI, WRAP, SA 8000 and ICTI. And all these social audits can be uploaded onto Sedex. It is up to the individual member to decide which audit best suits their purposes, however, Sedex hopes that by providing SMETA Best Practice Guidance publicly, companies will come together gradually into one international audit protocol.

 

What does the standard look like

SMETA 2- and 4-Pillar audits have been developed for auditing against the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) and the Base Code, plus these additional elements:
