Uterine fibroid is a benign (non-cancerous) tumour seen in the uterus. Fibroids are usually multiple and the condition is known to recur even after the fibroids have been removed by surgery.

Causes :

The cause of uterine fibroids has still not been effectively determined. However, it is a fact that fibroids grow and sustain in presence of the hormones Estrogen and Progesterone. That is why fibroids shrink after menopause when hormonal levels reduce.

Signs and Symptoms:

• Heavy and painful periods , Severe lower back pain
• Abdominal cramps , Bloating in the abdomen
• Increased frequency of urination

Sometimes, fibroids go unnoticed till the time of pregnancy. In such cases, the woman may show:

• Bleeding during pregnancy , More chances of premature labour
• Miscarriage, if fibroids are big and/or multiple

Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding is an abnormal bleeding from the genital tract in the absence of any structural pathology. Any irregular bleeding which cannot be explained by any medical reason is diagnosed as DUB.

Causes :

The underlying issue in DUB is irregular and abnormal fluctuations in the levels of hormones in the body, especially Progesterone. DUB is usually seen when women fail to ovulate. Ovulation is when an egg is released by one of the ovaries. Failure of ovulation causes changes in hormonal levels and this can trigger abnormal bleeding

DUB can occur even in women having ovulatory cycles, but this condition is very rare.

Signs and Symptoms:

DUB is diagnosed if a woman complains of:

• Periods lasting longer than 7 days
• Flow of periods is heavier than normal and passage of clots occurs

Causes :GERD is a disease in which the contents of the stomach come back up into the esophagus (the pipe that connects the mouth to the stomach). There is reflux of food / drinks mixed with the acid of the stomach and hence can give rise to burning (heartburn).

There is a small band of muscle fibres which form a ring at the junction of the esophagus and stomach called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). It acts like a guard, remaining closed at all times, except when food has to enter the stomach from the esophagus. It never allows food to reflux back into the esophagus from the stomach.

However, in GERD, the LES becomes abnormally relaxed, resulting in regurgitation of food from stomach into esophagus. The conditions which can give rise to this condition are:

• Obesity
• Consuming stimulants like alcohol and caffeinated drinks.
• smoking
• Having a large, fat-rich meal
• Pregnancy
• Certain drugs like , bronchodilators, antidepressants, etc.

Causes :IBS is a functional disorder of the bowel characterized by a chronically persistent abdominal discomfort and/or pain, flatulence (bloating) and frequent changes in bowel habits.

• The root cause of IBS still remains a mystery, although certain patterns have been noticed in IBS sufferers.
• In some cases, IBS is triggered by an infection of the gastro-intestinal tract. This is because the infectious agent causes exaggerated irritation of the intestines.
• IBS also has a very strong trigger in emotional stress, since during this time, the brain sends excess signals to the digestive tract thus causing hypermobility and irritation. It is especially seen in people having unresolved psychological issues.
• Certain hormones and drugs are also known to trigger the disease in young adults.

Signs & Symptoms :

IBS is diagnosed if the symptoms are present for at least 3 days of the months for at least 3 consecutive months. They are :

• Abdominal discomfort or dyspepsia
• Bloating sensation with passage of gas
• Pain in the abdomen which is cramping in nature
• Altered bowel habits, sometimes constipation, sometimes diarrhea
• All symptoms are always temporarily better by defecation

Chances of developing Anemia increase during pregnancy because the demands of the body increase.Simply put, Anemia means a less than normal hemoglobin count. Hemoglobin is a protein found in the Red Blood Cells of the blood which carries Oxygen to all the cells of the body. This Oxygen is essential to carry out the activities of each and every cell.

Anemia can happen because of:

Iron Deficiency: When the body suffers from reduced supply of iron, hemoglobin cannot be produced thereby resulting in Anemia. This is the commonest cause of Anemia in pregnancy.

Folate Deficiency: Folate or folic acid is a vitamin which is essential for proper development of the red blood cells. In folate deficiency, blood cells do not mature properly and are unable to transport Oxysgen resulting in Anemia.

Vitamin B 12 Deficiency: Like folate, Vitamin B 12 is needed for maturation of red blood cells, and when this nutrient is deficient, Anemia occurs.

Causes :

• Inadequate nutrients in the diet or inadequate nutrient intake
• Twin pregnancies
• Poor absorption of nutrients by digestive system
• Excessive vomiting during pregnancy
• When two pregnancies happen within a short time frame

When blood shows abnormally high levels of sugar in a pregnant woman, she is said to have diabetes.

When you eat, the digestive system breaks your food down into the simplest sugar, glucose. The glucose is then utilized by the cells of the body with the help of the hormone, Insulin, which is secreted by the pancreas. When adequate insulin is not available or if the glucose does not respond normally to the available insulin, the levels of glucose go up abnormally in the blood and diabetes results. In cases of pregnancy, the cells become less responsive to insulin, and insulin production too, decreases.

Causes :

A pregnant woman is at risk of developing diabetes if:

• There is strong family history of Diabetes Mellitus
• She has suffered from Diabetes in her earlier pregnancy

• There is sugar in her urine and she has recurrent urinary infection
