Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan) (AYJNISHD) was established on 9th August 1983. It is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi. The Institute is located at Bandra (West), Mumbai – 400 050. Regional Centres of the Institute have been established at Kolkata (1984), New Delhi (1986), Secundarabad (1986) and Bhubaneshwar (1986- in association with Government of Orissa). These are centres aimed at meeting the local and regional needs in terms of manpower development and services. The District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRCs) under Gramin Punarvasan Yojana (GPY) a programme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India was started in the year 2000. The objective of the programme is to provide total rehabilitation to persons with sensory (hearing and vision), physical and mental disabilities. Under this programme, 24 DDRCs were allotted to AYJNISHD. All the 24 DDRCs, on completion of successful establishment and running for three years, are handed over to State Governments/District Administration/NGO. Composite Regional Center (CRC), Bhopal is a service model initiated by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India, established on 14th August, 2000. The Center is functioning under the administrative control of AYJNISHD since February, 2006. An one more CRC at Ahmedabad, Gujarat was established on 16th Aug, 2011 and this CRC also functioning under the administrative control of AYJNISHD.+ Read More

A large number of hearing impaired living in rural, far–flung and remote areas do not get the attention, that the hearing impaired living in urban areas get. With the aim of making available the services – diagnosis, fitment, counselling and creating awareness, an Outreach and Extension Service Department was created and launched in the year 1989.

Since then, a team of multi–professionals armed with diagnostic equipment and fitment aids, provide services by camping in rural and far flung areas – right from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. In addition, they also provide guidance to the interested local NGO's of the rural areas, in setting up service centres, pre–schools, vocational training centres, etc

Comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic, educational services are provided to the hearing & speech impaired. An inter–disciplinary team of audiologists, speech language pathologists, special educators, psychologists, social workers, ENT specialist, pediatrician and neurologist maintain high standard of rehabilitation services like:

The institute functions from Monday to Friday except on public holidays notified by the Central Government, from 9 am to 5.30 pm.

Clinical Service is provided on all working days from 9 am to 5.30 pm. But timings for registration of new cases is restricted as below:

  • New Registration ( Local clients ) – 9 am to 12 noon
  • New Registration ( Out station clients ) – 9 am to 3 pm

The Rehabilitation process remains incomplete till it is equipped with the Socio Economic Rehabilitation Component. Infact the Socio Economic Rehabilitation forms the most important part of the total rehab process. NIHH is trying to create such facilities by way of establishing required infrastructure. We have a full fledged Socio Economic Rehabilitation Department to take care of the socio–economic need of the hearing handicapped.
