The Elcometer 3092 Sclerometer Hardness Tester is a simple but effective gauge for determining the hardness of a large variety of coatings and surfaces by moving a Tungsten Carbide Tip over the coating with predetermined force. The body of the hardness testing instrument contains a cursor fitted with a screw lock and a round tip, compressed by one of the four springs corresponding to the four printed scales:
- Grey spring: 0-3N (0.671lbF)
- Red spring: 0-10N (2.248lbF)
- Blue spring: 0-20N (4.49lbF)
- Green spring: 0-30N (6.74lbF)
The spring force can be set by the "collar"; compressing the spring increases the force with which the tip is pushed on to the surface of the test piece. By making short, straight movements while gradually increasing the load, the user can observe the force at which the tip leaves a mark or destroys the coating.

Hydraulic Brinell hardness tester has the same structure as King Brinell hardness tester. It is the unique portable hardness tester in the world which applies test condition with 3000kg test force on a 10mm carbide indenter. The large indentation resulted by the tester can reflect the average value of combined influence affected by all the compositions of large materials. It is unaffected by certain composition of materials or partial nonuniform distribution and very suitable for testing nonuniform materials made of large crystal particle. The testing result of this instrument is true and accurate with good repeatability and it has a good correspondence with tensile strength. It is the best mechanical property tester which can be used on site. The test condition and accuracy meet the requirements of ISO 6506 and ASTM E110 and can be used to test rough castings, forgings, nonferrous metals and semi-finished products after tempering heat treatment.
It adopts hydraumatic principle which functions the hand-operated way to apply 3000kg test force. The central part of ISHB-H131 is a small hydraulic system in which a release valve is used to control the test force. When the force reaches 3000kg, the release valve will open and the pressure will fall down. As specified in the operation manual, the tester needed to be forced to make the indicator of the dial point at 3000kg test force for 3-5 times. Thus it is equivalent to the test condition of Brinell hardness testing method to hold 3000kg test force for 10-15 seconds with 10mm steel ball, which complies with ASTM E110.
On-site TestingIt can be used in workshop, simple operation, easy carrying, and testing ontic hardness of large parts. It is convenient to test piece by piece.
Permanent IndentationBy 3000kgf and 10mm ball, the indentation is permanent for re-inspection.
High ReliabilityIt follows the Brinell hardness test method completely, the same as desk testers, reflecting the actual mechanical property of material or parts
Wide Appilcation RangeAs long as clamped to the parts, it could test parts in any shapes and sizes.
Wide Testing RangeIt could test various common metal materials by the combination of different test force, indenters and anvils, that is wide testing range.

We are engaged in providing the broad assortment of “Hardness and Scratch” testing instruments.
“Barcol Impressor Hardness Tester” is easy to use & no experience required.
It can be used in any position and in any space that will allow for the operator's hand. Making sure the indenter point is perpendicular to the surface being tested, the instrument is placed onto the sample and a light pressure is exerted against the instrument driving the spring-loaded indenter point into the material and the hardness reading is instantly indicated on the dial, which is divided into one hundred graduations. No waiting, pre-loading or separate measurements.
Portable : The Impressor is a convenient tool for testing the hardness of aluminum, aluminum alloys, copper, brass and other materials including plastics and fiberglass. The instrument is designed for use on fabricated parts and assemblies as well as on raw stock.
Easy to Use : No experience required; can be used in any position and in any space that will allow for the operator's hand. The hardness reading is instantly indicated on the dial, which is divided into one hundred graduations. No waiting, pre-loading or separate measurements.
Lightweight : The Impressor weighs only 1 lb. 2 oz. The entire Impressor package comes complete with carrying case, adjusting wrench and two spare indenter points. The Impressor + case = 2 lb. 8oz. Shipping weights = 4 pounds, box = 12 x 11 x 6 inches, dimensional weight 5 pounds. (1.8 kilograms, box = 21 x 28 x 16 cm, dimension weight 2.5 Kilograms)
There are three models in the range:
- Model 934-1:
For soft metals such as aluminum and its alloys, brass, copper, and some of the harder plastics and fiberglass. Approximate range 25 to 150 Brinell (10 mm ball, 500 kg load). This unit meets ASTM Standard D2583.
- Model 935:
For softer plastics and very soft metals
- Model 936:
For extremely soft materials such as lead, linoleum and leather
For accurate readings, material should be at least 1 /32"thick and large enough for a minimum distance of 1/8" in any direction from the indenter point to the edge of the specimen. The testing area should be smooth and free from mechanical damage.
Simply exert alight pressure against the instrument to drive the spring-loaded indenter point into the material. The indenter point must be perpendicular to the surface being tested. On very soft metals, the highest reading should be used since cold flow permits the spring loaded indenter point to continue penetration.
Note: Physical characteristics of very soft materials are such that uniform correlation between different hardness measuring systems cannot be established. We recommend that Impressor hardness limits for each material be established by test.
To ensure the Barcol Hardness Tester is in calibration, a range of Standard Test Discs is available. Please select the appropriate Test Disc from the list of Accessories to supplement the disc supplied.
All results are recorded in Barcol Units (BU).
Application :
- Aluminum Alloys

The Webster Hardness Testers are a portable, fast, accurate hardness gauge that are made in three distinct models for testing Aluminum, Brass, Copper and Mild Steel. Webster Hardness Testers will quickly identify tempers and test a variety of shapes that other testers cannot check, such as extrusions, tubing and flat stock.
All testers operate in the same manner but differ only in penetrator design, type of load spring and hardness ranges. The principle of operation is simple. The work to be tested is placed between the anvil and the penetrator. Pressure is then applied to the handles until "bottom" is felt at which time the dial indicator is read.
- One hand operation and portability.
- Round 3/8 inch diameter anvil permits testing a great variety of shapes
- Simple operation
- Test is made by simply applying pres- sure to the handles until "bottom" is felt
- Easy-to-read dial indicator with 20 graduations converts to standard hardness scale, or can be used as "go" and "no-go" gage
- Standard hardness gage tests materials up to 1/4 inch in thickness. Increased capacities available up to 1 inch
- Each tester is shipped in a fitted case with a spare penetrator, adjusting wrench and standard test strip
Model B
The Model B Tester is designed to cover the hardness of aluminum alloys from the 1100 to the 7075 series. The 20 graduations on the Webster dial indicator covers the range between 25 and 110 on the Rockwell E Scale.
Model B-75
The Model B-75 Tester was developed to obtain more sensitive response to slight changes in the upper range of hardness covered by the Model B. This sensitivity is particularly useful in testing mild steel and the stronger aluminum alloys. For brass the B-75 covers the range from annealed to full-hard. This added sensitivity is accomplished by incorporating a penetrator of slightly different contour and a heavier load spring than used in the Model B. The 20 graduations on the Webster dial indicator covers the range between 20 and 100 on the Rockwell B Scale.
Model BB-75
The Model BB-75 Tester was developed to answer the need of certain industries for a method of rapidly testing the hardness of electro-deposited copper and copper in the low hardness range. The B-75 penetrator is used to give sensitivity and the Model B load spring is employed to give light pressures. This combination allows the user to test the soft range of many common materials.

We are engaged in providing the broad assortment of Buchholz , “Hardness and Scratch” testing instruments.
Improved mechanical resistance is part of many quality requirements. One important criteria for assessing this feature is hardness. Depending on the requirements there are various methods for testing hardness. Some are dedicated to characterize coatings and others are more suitable for testing bulk materials such as metals, plastics, rubber or elastomers. Elcometer manufacture and supply a wide range of instrumentation designed for the hardness tests most frequently used in the industry – these include pendulum, scratching, indentation or rebound measuring methods.
There are 2 popular methods of Hardness & scratch measurement depend different properties of material.
01) Resistance to Scratch and Wear Method:
Elcometer offer various options to assess “Coating’s resistance to scratch”
- Pencil Hardness Tester – Marking
- Sclerometer - Scratch
- Clemen Apparatus - Scratch/Indentation
- Scratching and Shearing Instrument - Scratch

Elcometer offer various options to assess “Resistance to penetration”. For coatings in particular, there are three common methods where the depth of penetration of a weighted tool is used to show the coating’s resistance to penetration:
- Buchholz Hardness Tester
- Barcol Impressor Hardness Tester
- Shore Durometer
The Elcometer 3095 Buchholz Hardness Tester is a simple-to-use gauge for measuring the hardness of coatings on substrates using an indentation method. The indenting tool incorporates a bevelled disc of indenting tool which is fitted into a stainless steel block exerting a constant test load of 500g.
The tool is positioned on the test specimen with the edge of the disc in contact with the coating. The mass of the tool provides a constant load between the disc and the coating.
The gauge is places on to the coating for 30 seconds and the length of any subsequent indentation in the coating is measured using the graduated microscope. The length of the indentation is inversely proportional to the hardness of the coating.
The result is expressed as units of Buchholz Indentation resistance using the scale printed in the operating instructions.
