The Elcometer 134S Chloride Ion Test Kit for Surfaces allows the surface to be tested for chloride salts prior to application of a coating.
Chloride salts left on the surface before the first coat is applied can result in the coating system being forced off the surface by corrosion or blistering before the full life of the coating has been reached.
To ensure that the chloride has been removed it is essential that the surface is tested before the coating is applied.
Elcometer 134S test method: a latex sleeve is filled with a Chlor*Rid extract solution and stuck to the test surface where the solution is worked against the surface to extract the salts. The titration tube is inserted and the results can be recorded.
TEST PROCEDURE
1. Remove cap from CHLOR*EXTRACT solution bottle and pour entire contents into the test sleeve. If applying to a horizontal surface, clip the
sleeve to prevent loss of solution, removing any excess air.
2. Peel off the blue pressure sensitive backing from test sleeve; remove the air from the test sleeve by squeezing between fingers and thumb.
When evacuating air, take care not to spill CHLOR*EXTRACT from the sleeve.
3. Firmly apply test sleeve to test surface. Lift and hold the free end of the test sleeve upright to allow extract solution to come into contact with test surface. Use other hand to massage the solution through the test sleeve against the surface for 2 minutes.
4. When massage is complete, remove the test sleeve: For vertical or overhead surfaces, the solution will flow down to the closed end of the test sleeve. For horizontal surfaces, press and slide finger across sleeve to move solution to closed end of sleeve prior to removal. Use the clip to help retain the solution during sleeve removal.
5. Using caution and avoiding touching the ends of the titration tube, snap off both ends with the metal snapper provided and insert the titration tube into the test sleeve with smaller numbers and arrow at bottom.

The Elcometer 139 Amine Blush Chip Screen Test Kit is a rapid colorimetric test designed solely for the use in the quick and immediate identification of amine blush (carbamates) on the surface of coatings using small chips or shavings.
Amine blush is based on the presence of the carbamate compounds and not on physical phenomena such as pH. This method has field and lab applications, is quick and easy to use, and does not require expensive pieces of laboratory equipment. The medical field and Homeland Security have several different quick methods to test for carbamates in case of emergency, such as pesticide poisoning or a terror threat involving chemical agents. In these instances, there is not an abundance of time to allow for the use of the GC/MS and FTIR equipment; lost time equals lost lives. Instead, these agencies use testing methods that involve a biological response or inhibition of the enzyme cholinesterase to the carbamate class of compounds. The inhibition of cholinesterase takes place as a result of the phosphorylation by organophosphates or carbamylation by carbamates of the serine residue in the site of the enzyme.
The presence of amine blush is indicated by a visual change of colour of the test solution when compared with a control sample.
The Elcometer 139 determines whether amine blush is or is not present on the coating’s surface.

The Bresle method was launched in 1995 in the ISO 8502-6 and ISO 8502-9 standards. The test was developed to measure soluble salt concentration on steel surfaces prior to blasting cleaning and coating. Not only ISO, but also the US Navy, IMO, NAVSEA, and ASTM adopted this method as their standard. The method remains the primary and most flexible test method for soluble salts on metal surfaces.
If the coating is applied to a contaminated surface, which is not properly prepared, it could fail prematurely resulting in costly re-coating and high maintenance costs.
The Bresle method uses the difference of conductivity of salts in water, each salt having a characteristic conductivity-versus-concentration relationship.
This relationship is useful only if the dissolved salt is known. Sodium chloride, the main salt in sea water, causes a big increase in conductivity with increased concentration.
A special patch is applied to the surface to be tested, and a specified volume of deionized water is injected under the patch. Any soluble salts present on the surface will dissolve in the water. The fluid is extracted and its conductivity measured.
The conductivity of the collected salt solution depends on the volume of water used and its initial conductivity, and the amount of salt in solution depends on the area of the patch. The calculation of the salt per area is based on increased conductivity but in the IMO PSPC method the salt is calculated as sodium chloride, in the ISO 8502-9 method it is calculated as a specific mixture of salts, but expressed as Sodium Chloride.
Factors are applied to the measured conductivity, depending on what is known or assumed about the salt contamination and various conditions, in order to yield meaningful measurements of contamination. Some of the variables are:
- salt type
- volume of solution (in below table factors are calculated with a volume of 15 ml solution)
- temperature
- equipment-specific scaling
A test patch should be as clean as possible. Contamination of a patch can influence the results significantly.Bresle patch injected with 15ml water as in ISO 8502-6 Annex AThe ISO 8502-6 standard prescribes in annex A that certified patches shall be used. This annex describes a stress test to ensure patch adhesion and wash ability. Not being supplied with a certificate that the patches pass this test will render the results obtained by these patches useless.
The Elcometer 138 Bresle Kit includes the Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter. This lightweight, portable conductivity meter accurately measures the salinity of the test samples.
The sensor cartridge can be easily replaced when necessary and displays conductivity in a range of units including: S/cm, S/m, ppm and % salinity.

To help to prevent coating failure due to salts such as chlorides and sulphates contaminating the surface prior to the coating application. The Bresle Test is also known as the Salt Test on Steel or the Chloride Test on steel.
The only degeneration on the Bresle Patches is the adhesive if exposed to extremes of temperature. It is recommended that the Patches are used within a 12-month period from the date of purchase.
Bresle Patches will allow you to extract salts from blast-cleaned steel for measurement using the Horiba Conductivity Meter in the Bresle Patch Test.
Salts are almost colourless and are localized at the lowest point of the rust pits. If they are not removed prior to painting, chemical reactions can result in blister formation and accumulations of rust that destroy the adhesion between the substrate and the applied protective coating.

| Precaution1 | Needs to be run on clean steel as soon after blasting or cleaning as possible for best results |

The Potassium Ferricyanide Test, using Potassium Ferricyanide Papers will enable detection
of any water-soluble iron salts that form at the bottom of rust pits after blast-cleaning.
The Potassium Ferricyanide Papers enables detection of any water-soluble iron salts that form at the bottom of rust pits after blast-cleaning. If these salts are present, they rapidly induce corrosion.
The test involves the reaction of soluble ferrous iron salts with potassium ferricyanide to form ferric hexacyanoferrate, which is commonly known as prussian blue. The relatively high tinting strength of prussian blue enables the reaction to be used as a very sensitive test on ferrous irons
Simply spray a film of deionised water on an area of the blast-cleaned steel. The Potassium Ferricyanide Paper is then held against the surface for approximately 10 seconds. Any soluble iron salts present are drawn out of the rust pits by capillary action and react with the potassium ferricyanide to form blue spots. The presence of blue spots on the Potassium Ferricyanide Paper indicates that the surface should be re-blasted.Testing Spray a fine mist of deionized water droplets onto a small area of blast-cleaned surface using the Spray Bottle. Allow the deionized water droplets to evaporate and at the moment that they have disappeared but the surface is just perceptibly wet, using the protective gloves supplied, apply the Potassium Ferricyanide Test Paper and press onto the surface for 2 to 5 seconds. If soluble salts remain, these will be drawn by capillary action into the test paper and will react and give a Prussian blue dot effect on the paper corresponding to the contaminated pits on the blast-cleaned steel. It is important that the wetting of the surface has to be completed to the right degree in order to dissolve the salts. Too little deionized water and this will not be achieved. Too much deionized water and there is an overall blue colouration over the Test Paper. The Spray Bottle can be refilled using deionized water.
Health and Safety The Potassium Ferricyanide Test Papers consist of 90mm-diameter cellulose, impregnated with a low concentration of potassium ferricyanide. May produce toxic fumes on burning. Wear gloves when handling the Test Papers. After using the Test Papers, wash hands with soap and water.
Shelf Life Do not expose the Potassium Ferricyanide Test Papers to any extremes of temperature and ensure that they are retained in their light protective bag.
