Surface Profile Gauge
There are four different types of methods available for testing surface profile.
- Surface Comparators - used to compare freshly blasted profiles to predefined profiles.
- Replica Tape - a plastic test piece is pressed into the blasted surface and is measured to establish the surface profile.
- Surface Profile Gauges – A gauge to measure the profile recording the value from the top of the peak to the bottom of the valley.
- Surface Roughness Testers – These consist of a stylus attached to an arm which moves automatically over the surface to record and measure the profile.
Surface Profile Gauges are available in either analogue or digital versions. Once ‘zeroed’, the profile measurement is taken and the gauge records the value from the top of the peak to the bottom of the valley. Digital gauges minimise interpretation errors in the readings and are fast and accurate.
Mechanical surface profile gauges
Surface Profile gauge used to record the value from the top of the peak to the bottom of the valley measuring the profile height of a surface. This mechanical surface profile gauge is very simple and easy to use to get quick readings, which is ideal for use in explosive areas but users are required to manually record and calculate the average of the spot readings to determine the surface profile.
Digital surface profile gauges
Surface Profile Gauge similar to theAnalog Surface Profile Gauge, however it provides more of a sophisticated approach into recording readings digitally without having to write it down. Fast, accurate and very user friendly, Surface Profile Gauge can measure the surface profile on either flat or curved surfaces. Other type Surface Profile Gauge measures the peak-to-valley height of a surface.. Memory versions allow readings to be stored and later downloaded to a PC via Bluetooth® wireless technology.

A Surface Profile Gauge is an instrument used to measure the roughness or texture of a surface. It's also known as a surface profile meter or surface roughness gauge. This device helps determine the peak-to-valley height of surfaces, particularly those that have been blast-cleaned or otherwise roughened, such as steel prior to painting or coating.
Purpose:
# To quantify the roughness or texture of a surface.
# To assess the preparedness of a surface for coatings, adhesives, or other applications, ensuring proper adhesion and performance.
# To measure the effects of corrosion, such as pitting and cavity depth.
Digital Surface Profile Gauge is use in surface profile measuring technology for measuring profile on either flat or curved surfaces.

The Keane-Tator Surface Profile Comparator is a tool specifically designed to help assess the surface profile roughness of blast-cleaned steel, which is essential for ensuring proper coating adhesion. It is often used in industrial settings, particularly within the coatings and corrosion protection industries
Keane-Tator Surface Profile Comparator:
Purpose: To visually and tactilely assess the surface profile of blast-cleaned steel. It provides a standardized reference for comparing the prepared surface to ensure it meets required specifications before painting or coating.
Method: Allows users to compare the surface texture with reference discs using an illuminated 5X magnifier. You can also perform a tactile assessment by touching the surface and comparing the feel to the disc segments.
Reference Discs: Durable, high-purity nickel discs with varying roughness levels.
Abrasive Types: Available for sand, shot, or grit/slag surfaces.
Roughness Grades: Each comparator typically offers multiple roughness grades or sectors with known profile measurements. For example, one model has 5 grades ranging from 0.5 to 5.5 mils.
Compliance: Conforms to industry standards such as ASTM D4417-A and ISO 8503.
Each comparator is supplied with 5 profile grades ranging from 0.5 - 5.5mils.

Elcometer 103 Blast Nozzle Gauge
A Blast Nozzle Gauge, also known as a Nozzle Orifice Gauge, is a simple tool used to measure the orifice size of an abrasive blasting nozzle. This is essential for determining nozzle wear, which can affect blasting efficiency and productivity.
Purpose:
# Measure orifice size: It gives a quick and easy measurement of the nozzle's opening.
# Monitor nozzle wear: It helps track how the nozzle orifice is widening over time due to abrasive impact.
# Determine nozzle efficiency: As the nozzle wears, it can lead to decreased nozzle pressure and reduced efficiency in the performance of the nozzle's venturi.
# Guide nozzle replacement: It helps determine when a nozzle needs to be replaced to maintain optimal blasting performance.
Importance of Monitoring Nozzle Wear:
# Decreased productivity: A worn nozzle results in less effective blasting, reducing production rates.
# Increased abrasive consumption: Worn nozzles consume more abrasive media to achieve the same results.
# Improper surface profile: Nozzle wear can lead to inconsistent blast patterns and an improper surface profile.
# Reduced blast pressure: As the orifice widens, the back pressure decreases, leading to a drop in blast pressure.
This gauge is used to determine the nozzle orifice wear which leads to low nozzle pressure and decreased efficiency in the performance of the nozzle's venturi. Nozzle orifice wear results in decreased productivity and increased abrasive media consumption.
To ensure your nozzle provides continuous high production, as a general rule, replace your nozzle when the orifice wears by 1 nozzle size.
