The Elcometer 101 Coating Thickness Gauge is a mechanical coating thickness gauge for measuring nonferrous coatings or sheets applied to or laid on a ferrous magnetic base
The original non – destructive dry film thickness gauge, the Elcometer 101 Magnetic Coating Thickness Gauge was the world’s first portable coating thickness gauge with the original being produced in 1947.
Insensitive to hot and cold surfaces – ideal for hot sprayed metal coatingsIncorporates reading hold featureAccuracy of ±10%Ideal for hazardous areas
The Elcometer 101 Magnetic Coating Thickness Gauge can be used in accordance with:
AS 2331.1.3ASTM B 499ASTM G 12BS 5411-11ISO 2178SSPC PA2Standards not in bold have been superseded but are still recognised in some industries
Operation :Hold the Elcometer 101 Coating Thickness Gauge at right angles to the surface to be measured, place the two contacts on the surface and push down the small button to release the pointer. When the pointer comes to rest, it will indicate the thickness of the coating. Readings can be speeded up by using the push button as a brake by pumping it in and out until the pointer comes to rest.If the component has become magnetised take an average of two readings through 180° at the same point.
Calibration :
Take a foil equal in thickness to approximately mid scale reading and place this on an uncoated base ofsimilar material to that to be measured. With the large zero button adjust the scale to the thickness of thefoil. This is a more accurate method than setting the instrument to zero on an uncoated base.To obtain an accurate reading the meter should be read with the pointer in line with zero button. Formaximum accuracy keep the instrument clear of strong magnetic fields.
A well-integrated service support is provided from service centre with team of factory trained customer support group headed by a Service Manager, who double up for technical & application support to our customers.
Mechanical Coating Thickness Gauges are an ideal choice when coating thicknesses need to be measured where batteries cannot be used or are difficult to obtain. For example in remote locations, underwater, where dangerous gasses are present, you are looking for a basic coating thickness gauge to measure coatings on Ferrous Substrates (e.g. steel). These gauges all use the original method of measurement – the amount of force needed to remove a magnet from a Ferrous Substrate and are basic coating thickness gauges to measure coatings on steel

| Model Name/Number | Elcometer 3230 Wet Film Wheels |
| Brand | Elcometer |
| Measuring Range | up to 1000 micron |
| Type | Wet Film Thickness |
| Display Type | Analog |
| Size | 50 x 30mm (1.97 x 1.18") |
| Usage/Application | Suitable for flat and curved surfaces |
| Packaging | Wet Film Wheel, storage case and operating instructions |
Wet film wheels are high precision, accurate and easy to use instruments consisting of a set of three wheels, with measurement ranges from 0-25μm to 0-3000μm.
Using a wet film wheel: roll the wheel through a wet coating, the centre wheel eventually touches the film. This point on the scale indicates the thickness. When the volume to solids ratio of the coating is known, generally found on a product data sheet, the wet film thickness can be used to predict the dry film thickness. Roll from maximum to minimum to avoid a false reading caused by surface tension.
WET FILM WHEELS
The Elcometer 3230 wet film wheel consists of a central eccentric wheel and two outer concentric wheels. The diameter of the outer wheels is greater than that of the central wheel. By rolling the gauge through a wet coating, the centre wheel eventually touches the film. This point on the scale indicates the thickness. Various wet film thickness ranges are available up to a maximum of 1000pm (40mils).
Elcometer 3230 Coil Coating Wet Film Wheels
Elcometer 3230 but the outer wheels are knurled to allow measurements to be taken on slippery coatings or on fast-moving substrates. Two separate wet film thickness ranges are available; 0 - 50pm (0 - 2mils) and 0 - 100pm (0 - 4mils).

Available in four scale ranges, the Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Film Comb is designed to measure uncured powder coating film thickness.
This enables the application system to be set up and fine tuned prior to the curing process. In turn, this will reduce the amount of scrap and over-spray.
Place the comb into the powder and slide the comb along the surface. The measurement points (or teeth) are pointed and allow the powder to flow around them.
The thickness of the powder lies between the highest value where a drag mark is visible and the lowest value where a drag mark has not been produced.
Note: The thickness of a coating prior to cure is not the same value after curing but there is a correlation. The powder comb is suitable as a guide only.

| Model Name/Number | Elcometer 456 Coating Thickness Gauge Scan Probe |
| Brand | Elcometer |
| Various Mode | Scan Mode, Auto Repeat Mode, Counted Average, Fixed Batch Sizes Mode, |
| Life | Excess of 50 km (30 miles). |
| Range 1 | Range: 0-1500 micron / 0-60 mils / Ferrous (F) and Dual |
| Range 2 | Range: 0-5mm / 0-200mils / Ferrous (F) |
Featuring a highly durable ‘snap on’ replaceable probe cap, the Coating Thickness Gauge Ultra/Scan Probe is a revolutionary design which allows users to take individual dry film thickness readings or rapidly scan large surface areas - without damaging the probe or the coating.
When used in conjunction with the Coating Thickness Gauge Scan or Auto Repeat Modes, the Ultra/Scan Probe enables users to significantly reduce dry film thickness inspection times without affecting accuracy.
The Ultra/Scan Probe uses the Coating Thickness Gauge’s ensuring that any cap wear during use is incorporated within the calibration process. The coating thickness gauge even informs the user when to replace the cap.
- Scan Mode
When the Scan Mode is selected from the coating thickness gauge, users can slide the Ultra/Scan probe over the entire surface area. As the probe is lifted off the surface the gauge displays the average coating thickness value, the highest thickness and the lowest dry film thickness values. Each set of three dry film readings (average, high and low) can be displayed on the run graph and stored into the coating thickness gauge's memory.
During each scan, the coating thickness gauge displays the live thickness reading together with an analogue bar graph which graphically indicates the thickness relative to both the nominal thickness and any user-defined limits.
- Auto Repeat Mode
When the Ultra/Scan Probe is slid over the coated surface in Auto Repeat Mode, a coating thickness reading is taken approximately every half a second. Each individual dry film thickness reading is stored into the memory.
With a reading rate in excess of 140 readings per minute, the Auto Repeat Mode can significantly speed up the dry film thickness inspection of large coated areas.
- Counted Average Mode
Coating Thickness Gauge are supplied with the Counted Average Mode. Once the user has defined the number of individual gauge readings to be taken within a spot measurement, the coating thickness gauge stores the average of the individual gauge readings into the memory.
- Fixed Batch Sizes
The Fixed Batch Size feature within the Elcometer 456 Coating Thickness Gauge Model T allows users to define the maximum number of readings in each batch. Once the maximum number of readings has been reached the thickness gauge automatically opens up a new batch which is linked to the previous batch (name-1, name-2, etc.).
- Standards and Test Methods
International Standards and test methods often describe the number of individual coating thickness gauge readings to be taken in a spot measurement and/or the number of spot measurements required over a defined surface area.
SSPC PA2 requires a minimum of three coating thickness gauge readings to be taken per spot measurement and five spot measurements over 10m2(~100ft2).
The Elcometer Coating Thickness Gauge can be set with a counted average of three and a fixed batch size of five to meet these requirements. Each batch defines an area of measurement.
When the Ultra/Scan Probe is connected to the DFT Gauge with Auto Repeat Mode selected, SSPC PA2 (or similar test methods) can be completed more than 40% faster.

Elcometer 550 Non-Contact Powder Thickness Gauge, this gauge includes a laser guide to help detect and keep consistent measuring distances. As a result, the number of readings and the speed at which they are completed are significantly increased.
By carefully controlling the thickness of powder applied to a product, you can minimize your powder usage and ensure the quality of your coating. As contact measurement solutions damage the finish and do not predict the cured coating thickness, measuring the powder thickness pre-cure requires a non-contact solution.
Using third generation proven airborne ultrasonic technology, the new Elcometer 550 accurately predicts cured coating thickness by non-contact measurement of coating powders.
- Accurately predicts the cured coating thickness within ± 5% of the reading or ±0.25mils (±5µm)

We are engaged in providing the broad assortment of Paint Inspection Gauge ( P.I.G.) Destructive coating thickness gauge used to measure multi-layer coatings.
It is also known as 'Tooke gauge'.
A Tooke gauge is a destructive testing tool used to determine the overall thickness, or the individual layer thickness, of a dry paint or coating in accordance with ASTM D4138. The gauge works by making a small incision (about the width of a pencil) through the coating down to the substrate level. The triangular V-shaped groove is then observed through a microscope on the gauge where an adjustable scale is used to measure the thicknesses of the coating layers. Coating an object to the proper dry film thickness reduces the likelihood of corrosion.
Although coating thicknesses are typically measured using non-destructive tools, these devices have their limitations. For instance, due to their method of operation, non-destructive tools can only measure coating thicknesses on non-metallic substrates. Furthermore, non-destructive methods cannot distinguish between different coating layers (e.g., top coat, intermediate layer, primer, etc.). A Tooke gauge must be used when the thickness of individual layers needs to be determined, such as for a failure analysis.
Perform hardness and cross-hatch adhesion tests with a single gauge – top unit only Elcometer 121/4 Standard & Top Paint Thickness Gauges can be used on single or multiple coats on virtually all substrates, including wood, plastics, metals, etc.
The Elcometer 121/4 Coating Inspection Gauges are hand-held that offers a quick, versatile method of coating examination and measurement in a portable, easy-to-use format.
The Paint Inspection Gauge is available in two versions, Standard and Top: • Standard gauges can be used for microscopic coating examination and destructive measurement of coating thickness. • Top gauges have the same functionality as standard gauges and can also be used for cross-hatch adhesion testing using optional tools.
Both P.I.G. models are supplied with illuminated integrated graticule microscopes.
The Paint Inspection Gauge Top model has an internal carousel allowing each of the three cutters to be selected easily together with a cross hatch adhesion tester.
- MEASURING FILM THICKNESS
- MEASURING MULTI-LAYER COATINGS
- POOR ADHESION (GIVES THE ILLUSION OF TOO LITTLE FILM THICKNESS)
- NO SEPARATION
- [TOP] MEASURING CROSS-CUT ADHESION
- Compact and convenient, ideal for paint thickness measurement in confined areas
- Made of anodised aluminium for durability
- Bright LED light source for clear vision
- Top Model can hold one cross hatch cutter & three standard cutters which are locked tight, a simple rotation of the cutter holder changes the cutting tool.
• Lightweight and durable – anodised aluminium construction.
• [STANDARD] The gauge holds a single cutting tool with built-in storage for 3 cutting tools.
• [TOP] Cutting tools are mounted on a rotary tool holder within the body of the gauge, allowing rapid change from one test to the next.
• [TOP] The tool holder accommodates three cutting tools plus an optional cross-hatch cutting tool.
• Built-in 50x microscope with rotatable graticule scale.
• Bright white LED light – ensures clear vision through the microscope.
• Small size – facilitates use of the gauge in confined areas.
Range : 2 - 2,000μm (0.08 - 80mils) Accuracy is dependent on tool cut angle, half a division

The Elcometer 3233 Pfund Thickness Gauge is a simple but effective gauge which is used to determine the wet film thickness of paints and similar products The gauge is ideal for measurement of translucent products (varnish, oil, etc.)
The gauge consists of two concentric cylinders, one sliding inside the other. A spherical glass lens is fitted to the bottom of the inner cylinder. When the gauge is pressed down onto the surface being tested the lens becomes immersed in the wet film. The thicker the film, the greater the diameter of the paint spot left on the lens.
For ease of use, the gauge includes a stainless steel rule for measuring the diameter of the paint spot. A conversion table in these instructions allows the diameter to be converted into film thickness.
