Force is used to drive the liquid through the evaporator tubes thus producing high tube velocities. A high efficiency circulating pump, designed for large volume and sufficient head, is used to supply the force. Proper design results in controlled temperature rise, controlled temperature difference and tube velocities that give optimum heat transfer.
Forced Circulation Evaporators are recommended for viscous, scaling and salting liquids. As the liquid is only heated in the steamchest with flashing taking place in the separator and no boiling taking place within the tubes, fouling on hot tube walls is reduced.
Forced Circulation Evaporators may be equipped with either horizontal or vertical steam chests. The circulating pump withdraws liquid from the lower part of the vapor-liquid separator and circulates it through the tubes at a high velocity. Boiling is suppressed in the tubes either by liquid head or an orifice plate. The heated liquid is discharged into the separator where the vapor flashes off due to the temperature difference and is removed through the top outlet. The liquid is discharged at a maintained liquid level.

Horizontal Thin Film Evaporators can increase the residence time of the product and achieve high evaporation rate and high percent distillate splits.
The product is distributed at the heated evaporator wall by the rotor so that a turbulent circular ring forms at the whole evaporator surface. Loss of film integrity is not possible therefore very high evaporation rates and very high percent distillate splits can be achieved.
It can also be used to carry out continuous reactions and reactive distillation in the thin and turbulent film at vacuum conditions by increasing the product residence time.

The objective of evaporation is to concentrate a solution consisting of a nonvolatile solute and a volatile solvent. In the overwhelming majority of evaporations the solvent is water. When the liquid phase is agitated, mass-transfer in the liquid phase is sufficiently rapid that the rate of evaporation of solvent can be determined by the rate of heat transfer from the heating medium, usually condensing steam, to the solution. Evaporation differs from drying in that the residue is a liquid-sometimes a highly viscous one-rather than a solid. It differs from distillation in that the vapor usually is a single component, and even when the vapor is a mixture, no attempt is made in the evaporation step to separate the vapor into fractions.

Agitated Thin Film Evaporator (ATFE) also known as Thin Film Evaporator (TFE) or Wiped Film Evaporator (WFE) consists of jacketed shell precision machined from inside & a rotor having blades that maintain a close clearance from the shell.
The feed distributor at the entry point distributes the liquid in a thin film on the heated wall. The high speed rotor further spreads & intensely agitates the film as it flows down. The generated vapors flow counter currently & get cleaned by an integrally mounted entrainment separator.

Agitated Thin Film Evaporators consists of a vertical steam-jacketed cylinder and the feed solution flows down as a film along the inner surface of large diameter jacket. Liquid is distributed on the tube wall by a rotating assembly of blades mounted on shaft placed coaxially with the inner tube. The blades maintain a close clearance of around 1.5 mm or less from the inner tube wall. The main advantage is that rotating blades permits handling of extremely viscous solutions. The device is suitable to concentrate solutions having viscosity as high as up to 100 P.

The Wiped Film Evaporator is used for concentration, distilling, stripping, dehydration and deodorisation of products which are heat sensitive or viscous. The equipment can handle a very wide range of feed compositions ranging from 1% to over 95% concentration.
The operation is continuous with a single pass; the self cleaning continuous contact wipers produce and renew the thin film. Such an operation improves product yield, avoids residue and colour formation. It has an internal condenser (optional) that minimizes the pressure drop and maintains vacuum.

Falling Film Evaporator (FFE) is a vertical shell and tube heat exchanger with a vapor- liquid separator mounted at the bottom. The liquid to be concentrated is fed at the top of the heated tubes and distributed in such a way that it flows down on the inside surface of the tubes as a thin film, under the influence of gravity. As the film gets heated, the vapors generated flow co-currently. The drag of vapors increases the turbulence and improves heat transfer performance. The balance liquid and vapor are separated in the vapor- liquid separator.
Features:
- Suitable for heat sensitive products
- Gentle evaporation with a short residence time in the evaporator
- Can operate under reasonable vacuum
- Multiple effect arrangement provides steam economy
Application:
- Concentration of dilute solutions of heat sensitive products containing water or solvents in applications such as plant extracts in water or organic solvents
- As a reboilier to a distillation column
- Recovery of solvents from contaminants
- Purification of biodiesel
- Pre-concentration before ATFE or ATFD
