Biogas is produced by the anaerobic fermentation of biomass, for example, residues from the food industry, waste, sewage sludge or renewable raw materials.

In fermentors, biogas is produced from biomass in anerober fermentation. Depending on the origin of the biomass varies the gas composition of the biogas. A typical gas composition is 60% CH4 (methane) and 40% of CO2 (carbon dioxide). The gas is wet (saturated with water) and contains contaminants such as H2S. Moisture and H2S are removed in the pre-cleaning.

In the fermenters and in the pre-cleaning usually low-pressure blowers are used. Compressors are needed when the biogas is to be stored or when the biogas is to be processed, so that the methane content is greater than 96%. The biogas upgrading can be done by different methods. Practically all require a process pressure from 6 to 15 bar, which is generated by compressors.

Biogas is gaining importance as an environmentally friendly alternative energy form. Especially interesting is the reprocessing into biomethane to be delivered to the natural gas grid or to be used for example by the vehicle refueling.

The compression was preconditioned before - the moisture and H2S content had to be reduced. The CO2 in the biogas is separated from the methane by a membrane. The biogas is compressed oil-free in two stages.

The compression to a maximum of 200 bar for vehicle refueling is performed in the second step.

The entire treatment plant and compressors are built by the plant engineer in a container.

The compressors had to be oil-free and had to be designed for continuous operation. Demanded were reliable and maintenance-friendly compressors.

Biogas technology provides alternative source of energy mainly from organic wastes. It is produced when bacteria degrade organic matter in the absence of air. Biogas contains around 55-65% of methane, 30-40% of carbon dioxide and small quantities of hydrogen, Nitrogen, Carbon monoxide, Oxygen and Hydrogensulphide. The calorific value of biogas is appreciably high around 4700 kcal or 20 MJ; at around 55% methane content.

The Biogas can effectively be utilized for generation of power through a biogas based power-generation system after dewatering and cleaning of the gas. In addition, the slurry produced in the process provides organic manure for farming with high NPK values.

The Biogas power plant consist of Biogas plant, gas cleaning system, 100% Biogas Engine with alternator, Control panel etc. The biogas produced from the biogas plant having Hydrogen sulphide gas which is very harmful to the Engine, which has to be removed through the gas cleaning system.

The Biogas of 1 cum will generate 1.5 KWh from every 1 KW rated capacity of Biogas Engine. Bio manure management is an integral part of a biogas based power generation system for arriving at an economically feasible operation level.

Artana Pressure swing adsoprtion,also known as PSA, is emerging as the most popular biogas upgradation technology in many parts of the world. A typical PSA system is composed of four vessels in series that are filled with adsorbent media which is capable of removing water vapor, CO2, N2 and O2 from the biogas stream.

During operation, each adsorber operates in an alternating cycle of adsorption, regeneration and pressure buildup. Dry biogas enters the system through the bottom of one of the adsorbers during the first phase of the process. When passing through the vessel, CO2, N2 and O2 are adsorbed onto the surface of the media. The gas leaving the top of the adsorber vessel contains more than 97% CH4

Biogas upgradation through PSA takes place over 4 phases: pressure build-up, adsorption, depressurization and regeneration. The pressure buildup is achieved by equilibrating pressure with a vessel that is at depressurization stage. Final pressure build up occurs by injecting raw biogas. During adsorption, CO2 and/or N2 and/or O2 are adsorbed by the media and the gas exits as CH4.

 

Depressurization is performed by equalizing with a second pressurizing vessel, and regeneration is achieved at atmospheric pressure, leaving a gas that contains high concentrations of CH4 to be re-circulated. During the regeneration phase, the bed must be regenerated by desorbing (or purging) the adsorbed gases. Purging is accomplished by reducing the pressure in the bed and back-flushing it with some of the concentrated gas product. The gas pressure released from one vessel is used by the other, thus reducing energy consumption and compressor capital costs.

Special adsorption materials are used as a molecular sieve, preferentially adsorbing the target gas species at high pressure. The adsorbent media is usually zeolites (crystalline polymers), carbon molecular sieves or activated carbon. Aside from their ability to discriminate between different gases, adsorbents for PSA systems are usually very porous materials chosen because of their large surface areas.

The ETP gas can have various applications depending upon client needs. Our team of experts analyses the energy consumption pattern and explores various options for ETP gas uitilzation with minimum capital investment and maximum reduction in energy bill. Various options for ETP gas utilization are as follows.

Option 1: Thermal Application

Dairies and food processing units generally have boilers with significant energy consumption. The ETP gas can be utilized in any existing boiler with some modifications. This is one of the most efficient way of utilizing ETP Gas. Monetary value of saving in fuel can be in Crors of rupees per year depending upon ETP size. Payback period of such project ranges in 2-3 Months. i.e instant return on investment with long term profit.

Other thermal application can be as replacement of LPG / PNG in central kitchen, or in colony or staff quarters through pipeline. Flow meter can be installed to measure gas consumption at each point.

Option 2: Electricity Generation using 100% biogas based generator

Industries, where there is limited thermal application of ETP gas, the recovered gas can be converted in to electricity. This would reduce the electricity bill significantly.

Option 3: Purification and bottling

If there is an access ETP gas or little opportunity to utilize other conventional energy sources, the ETP gas can be converted into Bio-CNG. This Bio-CNG can be used as vehicular fuel or replacement of LPG/ PNG. Since, Bio-CNG has very similar composition compared to CNG, it can be used as CNG without affecting performance.

 

Recovery and utilization of ETP gas is non-conventional source of energy and hence, reduces carbon footprint. It helps building green image.
