The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, swelling, redness and limited movements. Patients having joint injuries, inactive lifestyle, diabetes, thyroid problems, overweight, smoking; and those females having their uterus removed are at higher risk of developing arthritis. The most common causes of muscle pain are tension, stress, overuse and minor injuries:

  • Osteoarthritis: wear-and-tear damage to cartilage can result in bone grinding directly on bone, which causes pain and restricted movements. Knees are common sites.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis: the body's immune system wrongly attacks joints and inflame the joint membrane. The disease can eventually destroy cartilage and bone within the joint.

  • Gout: occurs when high level of uric acid accumulates in your joint as urate crystals, causing sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness in joints, often on the big toe. Increased intake of liver, sardines, sweetbreads, meats, cauliflower, shell fishes, mushrooms, spinach, alcohol etc are risk factors.

  • Shoulder Pain: Frozen Shoulder can occur after an injury or prolonged movement restriction. Frozen shoulder begin gradually (painful stage), worsen over time (frozen stage) and then resolve (thrawing stage), within 1-2 years. Impingement Syndrome occurs when there is impinge of tendons from bones.

  • Elbow Pain: Tennis Elbow is an overuse and muscle strain injury. You may feel pain on outside of your elbow while shake hands, turn a doorknob, hold a coffee cup, carry weight or while laundry your clothes. Golfer's elbow occurs similar to tennis elbow which occurs on the inside of your elbow.

  • Wrist / Ankle Pain: Wrist pain can be caused by repetitive stress, arthritis and due to Carpal tunnel syndrome. Ankle pain is mostly caused by sudden twisting injuries that result in sprains.

The main reason we suffer from back problems is that we are increasingly becoming sedentary creatures.

  • Muscular Back pain: Inefficient, weak, back muscles are prone to injury. Poor posture when sitting, standing and lifting can place unnecessary stress on your spine. Sports injuries and motor vehicle accidents are very common causes.

  • Disc Herniation: spinal disk is like a jelly donut, with a softer center encased within a tough coating. Slipped disk or ruptured disk or herniated disk occurs when the softer jelly pushes out through a crack in the tough case. It can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in arms or legs.

  • Cervical or Lumbar Spondylosis: age-related wear and tear affecting the spine in your neck or low back. As the disks dehydrate and shrink, bone spurs and other signs of osteoarthritis develop. Dehydrated disks, herniated discs, bone spurs, and stiff ligaments are the result.

  • Ankylosing Spondylosis: may include pain and stiffness in your lower back and hips, especially in the morning and after periods of inactivity. People who have a gene HLA-B27 are at increased risk.

  • Sciatica: a catching pain starts at the low back and radiates through buttocks - behind the thighs, knees, and calves and to the ankles and toes. Caused by pinching of nerve roots at the spine by a bulged disc or due to a degenerated vertebrae.

Life is in the breath; the respiratory system plays a vital role in delivering oxygen to the body — fuel for all the body's functions. Respiratory diseases can arise from a number of causes, including inhalation of pollutants, allergens, infections, accidents, and harmful lifestyles, such as smoking.

  • Allergic Rhinitis: Our immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless substance – dust, pollen or dander - as something harmful and release chemicals. These chemicals cause runny nose, itchy eyes, congestion, and sneezing and sinus pressure.

  • Bronchitis: Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of your air tubes, to and from your lungs. Cough, mucous, fatigue, slight fever, chest discomfort are the symptoms.

  • Asthma: airways narrow; swell and produce extra mucus. Breathing becomes difficult and trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. Allergies and GERD commonly cause asthma.

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: generally non-reversible condition; COPD causes the air tubes and air sacs to lose their elasticity and partially collapse. This leaves some air trapped in your lungs when you exhale. Wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, cough, mucous, blueness of lips and nails are symptoms. The main cause of COPD is smoking.

Ayurveda says, the above mentioned conditions are caused by imbalances of Prana & Udana Vata – which govern the physiology of normal breathing. Ayurvedic approach is through:

  • Deepana & Pachana medicines – Carminatives & Digestives

  • PCOD: Infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excess facial hair growth, hair fall, acne, dandruff, and obesity can all occur in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Enlarged ovaries containing numerous small cysts can be detected by ultrasound.

  • Uterine Fibroids: are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. Heavy bleeding, prolonged days of bleeding, pelvic pressure or pain, frequent urination, constipation, back pain, leg pain are common symptoms.

  • Dysmenorrhoea: Painful periods are common in teenagers and young adults. Periods tend to become less painful as you get older. Certain chemicals produced in the body may cause the uterus to contract too hard. This reduces the blood supply to the womb and leads to pain.

  • Normal vaginal discharge – Leucorrhea - is thin, white, milky and mild smelling and nothing for you to worry about. If the vaginal discharge is green or yellowish, strong smelling, and accompanied by redness or itching, you may have a vaginal infection like candidiasis.

  • Hair fall: We have an average of 100,000 hairs on our scalp. Most hairs grow 1.25 centimeter per month for up to six years and then they fall out. About 90% of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time and 10% at rest. After 2-3 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place. It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of this cycle. However, hormonal problems (thyroid, PCOD), nutritional deficiencies, auto immune conditions, complication to certain medications may affect the growth phase and cause abnormal hair loss.

  • Dandruff: Dandruff by definition is itchy and flaky scalp. The causes of such flaky skin are: dry skin conditions, seborrheic dermatitis, Psoriasis, Eczema and sensitivity to hair care products. With psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis, the entire life cycle of skin cells takes only days instead of a month. As a result, cells build up rapidly, forming thick scales and itchy, dry, patches.

  • Premature graying: Hair color is produced by tiny cells called melanocytes in the hair follicles. In the course of a lifetime, the activity of the melanocytes in each follicle retards, resulting in gray hairs. Each individual's melanocyte-clock is different. Premature graying has also been associated with thyroid disorders, vitiligo, vitamin B12 deficiency, and anemia.

  • Head Lice: This itchy infestation, also called pediculosis capitis is spread by coming into contact with either lice or their eggs. The challenge of treating Lice is making sure to get rid of all the nits and avoiding contact with other lice at home or school.

  • Scalp Odor: Overproduction of oil from the sebaceous glands in the scalp may lead to an overgrowth of bacteria or yeast or even an infection. Dietary imbalances, resulting in constipation or a deficiency of magnesium or zinc may be other causes. Some individuals cannot metabolize foods such as eggs, fish, liver and legumes. The result is a "fishy" smell.
