Hydrogenated castor oil, also known as castor wax, is a hardened vegetable wax produced from pure castor oil through the chemical process of hydrogenation. When hydrogen is introduced to pure castor oil in the presence of a nickel catalyst, the resulting product becomes waxy, highly viscous, and more saturated.

Hydrogenated castor oil is an ingredient prevalently found in many cosmetics, varnishes, and polishes. You most likely use it on a daily basis. Unlike pure castor oil, which is said to have a slightly offensive smell, it is completely odorless. Hydrogenated castor oil is also insoluble in water.

But why hydrogenate castor oil when the pure oil works so well for so many different applications? What is the purpose of hydrogenating castor oil, exactly?

Hydrogenated Castor Oil Uses?

The purpose of the hydrogenation process is to improve castor oil’s melting point, texture, odor, and shelf-life.

Once hydrogenated, the resulting castor oil product is comprised of hard, brittle flakes. Hydrogenated castor oil is considered an organic ingredient, as well as a vegan one, as it is vegetable-derived.

One application of hydrogenated castor oil is to improve certain cosmetic products. You can add the flakes to cosmetic formulations until thoroughly melted. In this capacity, hydrogenated castor oil acts as an emollient and a thickener; increasing the viscosity of creams, ointments, and lotions when their composition is too runny.

Hydrogenated castor oil also stabilizes cosmetics that come in stick-form (like lipstick) and increases these products’ melting points, making for a more stable product. In part thanks to hydrogenated castor oil, it’s not the end of the world if we leave a tube of red lipstick in a hot car! Hydrogenated castor oil means our lipsticks maintain a solid structure even when they’re pushed to the limit, and our deodorant doesn’t crumble as we apply it.

What Products Contain Hydrogenated Castor Oil?

You will often find hydrogenated castor oil in the following cosmetic products:

  • Lotions
  • Creams
  • Ointments
  • Deodorants
  • Foundations
  • Lipsticks
  • Lip balms
  • Anything in “stick” form

HCO gives some of our favorite products the texture, consistency, and stability we love.

Of course, just like pure castor oil, hydrogenated castor oil is incredibly versatile. Cosmetics are not the only products that benefit from its properties. HCO is also frequently present in the production of:

  • Rubbers
  • Waxes
  • Paints
  • Polishes
  • Varnishes
  • Crayons
  • Candles
  • Lubricants
  • Sealants
  • Carbon paper
  • Electrical capacitators
  • Polyurethane
  • …and more

Hydrogenated castor oil is especially present in these types of products when something requires resistance to moisture and oils, such as in polishes, varnishes, and paints.

What is PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil?

PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is the polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivative of hydrogenated castor oil. It’s uses are common in this form as an emulsifier and a fragrance ingredient.

PEG-40 has the FDA-approval for external use. Studies have found PEG-40 to be safe in concentrations of up to 100%. Generally speaking, PEGs are not skin irritants. PEG-40’s molecular weight of 40 means it is only minimally absorbed into the skin.

PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is the polyethylene glycol derivatives of hydrogenated castor oil, and is an amber colored, slightly viscous liquid that has a naturally mildly fatty odor. It is used in cosmetics and beauty products as an emulsifier, surfactant, and fragrance ingredient, according to research.

Functions:

PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is the polyethylene glycol derivatives of hydrogenated castor oil, and is an amber colored, slightly viscous liquid that has a naturally mildly fatty odor. It is used in cosmetics and beauty products as an emulsifier, surfactant, and fragrance ingredient, according to research.

PEGs are not considered to be irritants or sensitizers, and are CIR and FDA approved for use, but not on broken skin. The CIR has found that PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is safe for use in concentrations of up to 100% without causing irritation, although it has been shown to increase the sensitization potential of other ingredients. It's molecular weight of 40 means that it is minimally absorbed by the skin.

Despite the many fears regarding PEGs, they are seen as an ingredient in a large number of products because of their diverse properties. In a study published in the Toxicology journal in 2005, entitled "Safety assessment on polyethylene glycols (PEGs) and their derivatives as used in cosmetic products," it was concluded that: "Taking into consideration all available information from related compounds, as well as the mode and mechanism of action, no safety concern with regard to these endpoints could be identified. Based on the available data it is therefore concluded that PEGs of a wide molecular weight range (200 to over 10,000), their ethers (laureths, ceteths, ceteareths, steareths, and oleths), and fatty acid esters (laurates, dilaurates, stearates, distearates) are safe for use in cosmetics."

PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONThese bio-based, biodegradable, non toxic, low VOC/ high performing solvents derived from American grown soybeans are the “green” choice for solvents which meet stringent EPA clean air and other environmental challenges.

oya Methyl Ester or Methyl Soyate is a methyl ester derived from soybean oil, and is a methyl ester mixture made up of saturated and unsaturated C16 to C18 fatty acids.

SME is a low-cost, readily biodegradable alternative that can replace most of the traditional chlorinated and petroleum solvents. Methyl soyate finds use as a carrier solvent and adjuvant.

SME has a high solvency with a Kauri-butanol (KB) value of around 58 and has low toxicity. In comparison to most commercial solvents, SME is safer to handle and store due to its high flashpoint of approximately 170 degrees Celsius and high boiling point of well over 200 degrees Celsius. In addition, soya methyl ester is not an ozone-depleting chemical (ODC), hazardous air pollutant or volatile organic compound (VOC).

Common Name(s): Citronella oil , Ceylon oil , citronella
Uses:
Citronella oil is used in small amounts to flavor foods, scent cosmetics, and repel insects. It has been used in aromatic tea as a vermifuge, diuretic, and antispasmodic although no clinical trials have been performed.
Chemistry

Citronella oil contains a number of fragrant fractions of which citronellal, geraniol, and citronellol are the major components. 3 , 5 Gas chromatographic analysis of the Ceylon variety indicates that the oil contains large amounts of monoterpenes (approximately 27%), as opposed to the Java variety, which contains only 1% to 3%, mostly in the form of limonene. 1 Both types contain comparable amounts of geraniol (18% to 21%). The Java oil is superior to the Ceylon type; the Java variety contains 16% citronellol and 33% citronellal, whereas the Ceylon type contains only 8% and 5%, respectively. 1 The chemical composition of essential oil can vary tremendously. Other compounds predominant in citronella oil include citronellyl acetate, β bourbonene, geranyl acetate, elemol, L-borneol, and nerol. 1 , 6 , 7 A geraniol-rich mutant of citronella has been developed; it is reported to have a geraniol content as high as 60%. 8 The wild Ceylon variety (commonly called mana grass) has a chemical profile very different from the 2 cultivated types.

What is Citronella Essential Oil?

Citronella is a grass that mainly grows in some Asian countries and some islands of the South Pacific. It has a rich, crisp lemony aroma and thus bears the name citronella. The essential oil of citronella is extracted from two varieties of citronella. The first one is the Ceylon variety, whose scientific name isCymbopogon nardus and the second one is Java variety, called Cymbopogon winterianus in botanical terminology. In both cases, the essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the fresh plant.

Citronella Essential Oil Nutrition

While the first variety yields an oil whose main components are citronellol, citronellal, geraniol, limonene, and methyl isoeugenol, the oil obtained from the second variety contains citronellal, geraniol, geranyl acetate, and limonene as its chief constituents, with geraniol and citronellal higher in concentrations than the former variety. Hence, the oil obtained from the Java variety is considered to be higher quality. The main producers of this essential oil are China and Indonesia. This oil is also produced by certain other Asian, South & Latin American and African countries in smaller amounts.

Health Benefits of Citronella Essential Oil

Apart from being used as a flavoring agent for foods and beverages, it has varied medicinal uses, which are listed below.

Inhibits Bacterial Growth

Components like methyl isoeugenol and a few others that are found in citronella essential oil are responsible for this property. They kill bacteria and inhibit any further bacterial growth in the body. This is particularly helpful in treating infections in wounds, as well as in the colon, urethra, urinary bladder, stomach, intestines, urinary tracts, prostate, and kidneys.

Anti-inflammatory Properties

Citronella essential oil sedates inflammation, particularly those situations which pertain to the liver, stomach, intestines and other parts of the digestive system. The inflammations caused as side effects of drugs, excessive use of alcohol or narcotics, hard and spicy food, any disease, or any toxic element getting into the body can also be alleviated using this oil.

everaging on our vast manufacturing facilities, we are able to offer a wide range of silicone defoamer and silicone antifoams that contain non ionic surfactants & functional additives. With the help of different surfactants, we provide various types of silicon antifoam, antifoam emulsion and silicon antifoam emulsion with foam stability. Depending upon the nature of surfactants such as nonionic, cationic, anionic or amphoteric, the liquid can be either aqueous, non-aqueous or both.

The foams of these emulsions are the result of dissolved molecules in a liquid that alter the surface tension of the liquid.

Formulation process of these silicone defoamer and silicone antifoams:

  • Agitated bubbles will form, which will immediately encounter gravitational effects pulling liquid along the bubble walls back down into the liquid beneath the bubble
  • A simplified picture of a bubble can be described as spherical, having both an outer wall and inner wall
When the surface tension is high enough, bubble formation becomes more rigid and stable
  • If a bubble is subjected to mechanical agitation, bubbles caused by entrained air, would form very stable lamellar structures
  • The Marangoni effect is a major stabilizing factor in foam, and is driven by osmotic pressure
  • The aqueous liquid is being pulled through the bubbles'' walls creating regions of low and high surfactant concentrations, which sets up a gradient along the bubbles'' surface
  • The gradient would pump liquid back onto the bubble walls, where this phenomenon is referred to as a surface transport
  • The bulk viscosity also contributed to foam stability
  • As the viscosity of liquids increase, entrained air can be trapped in bubble below the liquid''s surface
  • With the increasing viscosity of the system, the coalescence capability of smaller bubbles merging to become larger bubbles also reduces
  • If the bubbles become large enough (increasing the diameter), bubble stability decreases.

Applications:

  • Used in aqueous solutions, these deformers prevent foaming and help in maintaining the volume in the reaction vessel.
  • Further, we also provide free samples of these deformers to our clients so that they can evaluate their quality.
  • Omtex Silicone Defoamer / Silicone Antifoams are high performance Silicone based products containing non ionic surfactants and functional additives.
