Ethylene glycol  is an organic compound with the formula (CH2OH)2. It is mainly used for two purposes, as a raw material in the manufacture of polyester fibers and for antifreeze formulations. It is an odorless, colorless, sweet-tasting, flammable, viscous liquid. Ethylene glycol is toxic to humans in high concentrations.

The major use of ethylene glycol is as an antifreeze agent in the coolant in for example, automobiles and air-conditioning systems that either place the chiller or air handlers outside or must cool below the freezing temperature of water. Uses:  

·             Dioxane is used as a solvent for a variety of practical applications as well as in the laboratory, and also as a stabilizer for the transport of chlorinated hydrocarbons in aluminium containers.

·       1,4-Dioxane is used primarily as a solvent in paints, varnishes, lacquers, cosmetics, deodorants, cleaning and detergent preparations, and in scintillating fluids.

·             1,4-Dioxane is used as a solvent for cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, benzyl cellulose, resins, oils, waxes, some dyes, and other organic and inorganic.

Environment

Dioxane has affected groundwater supplies in several areas. Dioxane at the level of 1 μg/L (~1 ppb) has been detected in many locations in the US.In the U.S. state of New Hampshire, it had been found at 67 sites in 2010, ranging in concentration from 2 ppb to over 11,000 ppb. Thirty of these sites are solid waste landfills, most of which have been closed for years.

Aniline is an organic compound with the formula C6H5NH2. Consisting of a phenyl group attached to an amino group, aniline is the simplest aromatic amine. OVERVIEW:

Cyclohexanol is the organic compound with the formula HOCH(CH2)5. The molecule is related to cyclohexane by replacement of one hydrogen atom by a hydroxyl group. This compound exists as a deliquescent colourless solid with a camphor-like odor, which, when very pure, melts near room temperature. Billions of kilograms are produced annually, mainly as a precursor to nylon.

BASIC REACTIONS:

Cyclohexanol undergoes the main reactions expected for a secondary alcohol. Oxidation gives cyclohexanone, which is converted on a large scale in industry to the oxime, a precursor to caprolactam. As a laboratory exercise, this oxidation can be affected with chromic acid. Esterification affords the commercially useful derivatives dicyclohexyladipate and dicyclohexylphthalate, which are used as plasticizers. Heating in the presence of acid catalysts converts cyclohexanol to cyclohexene.

APPLICATIONS:

As indicated above, cyclohexanol is an important feedstock in the polymer industry, firstly as a precursor to nylons, but also to various plasticizers. Small amounts are used as a solvent.

SAFETY:

Cyclohexanol is somewhat toxic: the TLV for the vapor for 8 h is 50 ppm. The IDLH concentration is set at 400 ppm, based on studies on the acute oral toxicity in animals.

OVERVIEW:

Diisopropyl ether is secondary ether that is used as a solvent. It is a colorless liquid that is slightly soluble in water, but miscible with organic solvents. It is used as an extractant and an oxygenate gasoline additive. It is obtained industrially as a byproduct in the production of isopropanol by hydration of propylene. Diisopropyl ether is sometimes represented by the abbreviation DIPE.

How is it produced?

To produce diisopropyl ether, propylene is first hydrated with water over a supported acidic catalyst to produce IPA (iso propanol).  This is then reacted further with either propylene, or additional IPA, to form DIPE with reaction conditions controlled to promote the etherification with propylene.

How is it stored and distributed?

Diisopropyl ether has a specific gravity of 0.78 and a flash point of -28 °C (closed cup) and is highly flammable.  It should therefore be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area that is free from the risk of ignition.  For transportation purposes, Diisopropyl ether is classified as packing group II and hazard class 3 and should be labelled as highly flammable and harmful.

What is Di Iso Propyl Ether used for?

Diisopropyl ether can be used in a wide variety of applications.  Its most common use is as a solvent as oil-based solutions dissolve in it.  This makes it the ideal base for many paints, waxes, dyes and resins.  It is also used as a solvent in paint thinners and stain removers.

It can also be used as an extraction agent in metallurgy where, for example, it can recover gold from a nitric acid solution.  DIPE also plays a role in the fuel industry as a gasoline blending component which, when added to gasoline, increases its octane levels.

Chemical manufacturers also find a use for DIPE in organic synthesis and as a means of analysing chemicals, as the solvent nature of DIPE makes it useful in chromatography.

Exposure to ethyl acrylate is primarily occupational. Acute (short-term) exposure of workers to ethyl acrylate vapors has been reported to cause drowsiness, lethargy, headache, nausea, convulsions, and respiratory and gastrointestinal irritation. Noncancerous lesions and inflammation of the nasal mucosa and depressed body weight gain have been observed in rats and mice exposed by inhalation for a chronic (long-term) duration. 
 In a study by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), increased incidences of squamous cell papillomas and carcinomas of the forestomach were observed in rats and mice exposed via gavage (experimentally placing the chemical in the stomach). However, the NTP recently determined that these data were not relevant to human carcinogenicity and removed ethyl acrylate from its list of carcinogens. EPA has classified ethyl acrylate as a Group B2, probable human carcinogen, but has not developed a potency estimate to quantify risk by inhalation.

Ethyl acrylate, stabilized appears as a clear colorless liquid with an acrid odor. Flash point 60°F. May polymerize exothermically if heated or contaminated. If the polymerization takes place inside a container, the container may rupture violently. Auto ignition temperature 721°F (383°C) (NTP). Less dense than water. Vapors heavier than air. Used to make paints and plastics.
