A gearbox is a mechanical arrangement of gears (toothed wheels) done in a way to transmit power from the prime mover to the end drive.

A gearbox, in its simplest form could just have one set of driver and driven gears to form a reduction drive to reduce speed and enhance torque at the end output. This type of arrangement is typically used in machinery that has an electric motor as the prime mover and requires the power to be utilised in moving heavier load than that could be done by the prime mover alone.

More complex application of the gearbox could be seen when several combinations of speed and torque is desired in the resultant drive. In such a scenario, the gearbox will allow the user to select the specific combination by engaging the desired one and disengaging the other.
