molded case circuit breaker, abbreviated MCCB, is a type of electrical protection device that can be used for a wide range of voltages, and frequencies of both 50 Hz and 60 Hz. The main distinctions between molded-case and miniature circuit breaker are that the MCCB can have current ratings of up to 2,500 amperes, and its trip settings are normally adjustable. An additional difference is that MCCBs tend to be much larger than MCBs. As with most types of circuit breakers, an MCCB has three main functions:

  • Protection against overload – currents above the rated value that last longer than what is normal for the application.
  • Protection against electrical faults – During a fault such as a short circuit or line fault, there are extremely high currents that must be interrupted immediately.
  • Switching a circuit on and off – This is a less common function of circuit breakers, but they can be used for that purpose if there isn’t an adequate manual switch.

The wide range of current ratings available from molded-case circuit breakers allows them to be used in a wide variety of applications. MCCBs are available with current ratings that range from low values such as 15 amperes, to industrial ratings such as 2,500 amperes. This allows them to be used in both low-power and high-power applications.

HRC fuse or high rupturing capacity fuse- In that type of fuse, the fuse wire or element can carry short circuit heavy current for a known time period. During this time if the fault is removed, then it does not blow off otherwise it blows off or melts.The enclosure of HRC fuse is either of glass or some other chemical compound. This enclosure is fully air tight to avoid the effect of atmosphere on the fuse materials. The ceramic enclosure having metal end cap at both heads, to which fusible silver wire is welded. The space within the enclosure, surrounding the fuse wire or fuse element is completely packed with a filling powder. This type of fuse is reliable and has inverse time characteristic, that means if the fault current is high then rupture time is less and if fault current is not so high then rupture time is long.Operation of HRC Fuse
When the over rated current flows through the fuse element of high rupturing capacity fuse the element is melted and vapourized. The filling powder is of such a quantity that the chemical reaction between the silver vapour and the filling powder forms a high electrical resistance substance which very much help in quenching the arc.

A soft starter is a solid-state device that protects AC electric motors from damage caused by sudden influxes of power by limiting the large initial inrush of current associated with motor startup. They provide a gentle ramp up to full speed and are used only at startup (and stop, if equipped). Ramping up the initial voltage to the motor produces this gradual start. Soft starters are also known as reduced voltage soft starters (RVSS).

Electrical soft starters temporarily reduce voltage or current input by reducing torque. Some soft starters may use solid-state devices to help control the flow of the current. They can control one to three phases, with three-phase control usually producing better results. Most soft starters use a series of thyristors or silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs) to reduce the voltage. In the normal OFF state, the SCRs restrict current, but in the normal ON state, the SCRs allow current. The SCRs are engaged during ramp up, and bypass contactors are pulled in after maximum speed is achieved. This helps to significantly reduce motor heating. Soft starters are often the more economical choice for applications that require speed and torque control only during motor startup. Additionally, they are often the ideal solution for applications where space is a concern, as they usually take up less space than variable frequency drives.

A motor protection circuit breaker, or MPCB, is a specialized electromechanical device that can be used with motor circuits of both 60 Hz and 50 Hz. It has several functions that allow it to provide a safe electrical supply for motors:

Fault Signaling – Most models of motor protection circuit breakers have a LED display that is turned on whenever the MPCB has tripped. This is a visual indication for nearby personnel that a fault has occurred and the electric motor must not be connected again until the fault is addressed.
Automatic Reconnection – Some MPCB models allow a cool down time to be input in case there is an overload, after which the motor will restart automatically.Electric motors are expensive equipment, so the role of the motor protection circuit breaker is very important. If a motor is not protected correctly, it may be necessary to carry out costly repair works or even replace the equipment completely. An electric motor that is adequately protected with an MPCB will have a much longer service life.

Air Circuit Breaker:The type of circuit breaker, which operates in air (where air-blast as an arc quenching medium) at atmospheric pressure, is known to be an Air Circuit Breaker. Principle of Operation of Air Circuit Breaker:The working principle of Air Circuit breaker is rather different from other types of circuit breaker. The main aim of circuit breaker is to prevent reestablishment of arcing after current zero where the contact gap will withstand the system recovery voltage. It does it same work, but in a different manner. During interruption of arc, it creates an arc voltage instead of supply voltage. Arc voltage is defined as the minimum voltage required for maintaining arc .The circuit breaker increases the voltage in three different ways:Arc voltage can be increased by cooling arc plasma. As soon as the temperature of arc plasma motion of particle in arc plasma is reduced, more voltage gradient will be required to maintain the arc.By splitting the arc into a number of series will increases the arc voltage.Arc voltage can be increased by lengthening the arc path. As soon length of arc path is increased the resistance path will increase more arc voltage is applied across the arc path hence arc voltage is increased.It is operated within voltage level up to 1 KV. It contains two pairs of contact. The main pair carries the current and the contact made of copper. An additional pair of contact is made of carbon. When the breaker is opened, the main contact opens first. During opening of the main contact, the arc contact remains in touch with each other. The arcing gets initiated when arc contacts are separated.
