The innovative design is compact, light in weight and economical. 4S-V30 valves are provided with a groove/step on the seat to be held in position between seatring and the body: Under throttled condition, when the valve disc is crack open, the high velocity cannot pull the seat. Hence seat will not get damaged due to high velocity during control duty.

Seal Back-up Ring: will prevent any undue outward movement of the Teflon seat.

The seat is designed to move slightly in the direction of flow: this allows the pressure access to the back of the seat, thus making the seat progressively tighter as the pressure increases. The Fouress Triple Eccentric Butterfly Valve is a high integrity Butterfly Valve, which is particularly suitable for a variety of arduous applications. Basically, such valves can be classified into three categories.

  • Fire safe to API 607
  • High temperature
  • Other critical applications

A Triple Eccentric Fire Safe Butterfly Valve is not intended for use at high temperature during normal operation. It only has to withstand a fire and retain its sealing integrity after the fire, for a short period of time, after which the valve may be refurbished. The fire-safe testing in accordance with API 607 is a mandatory requirement for such critical applications. Conversely, a valve designed to operate continuously at elevated temperature need not necessarily conform to the fire-safe requirements. Fire-safe valves are normally installed in pipelines carrying hydro-carbons and other flammable liquids or gases. The line fluid is generally at temperature around ambient, an the function of the valve is to prevent leakage could fuel a fire external to the valve. One of the major difference between the Fouress design and the other types of fire-safe valves, is the valve remains intact even after being exposed to fire. It does not rely on components melting and disintegrating allowing secondary seals to come into use.

“High temperature” Butterfly valves are designed to suit specific applications and particular attention is given to the selection of the correct materials for the duty involved. The term “high temperature” in context of Butterfly Valves covers the range of temperature above which traditional resilient sealed valves operate (Maximum recommended operating temperature are aprox 1000C for Nitrile Rubber, and 2000C for Viton).

The third category of Butterfly Valves is for critical applications where for some specific reasons the use of resilient valve seals id precluded. Typical uses would be pipeline carrying solvents or other chemicals, and liquids or gases containing corrosive particles.

Why Flow Reversal Systems

Power Stations using sea water and raw water to condense the outlet steam from steam turbines have a problem of fouling of the condenser tubes due to weed and marine growth. Marine growth occurs on the cold side of a condensing system, indicating that the small rise in temperature to the warm side is sufficient to kill incipient growth. Based on this, Fouress-Boving have successfully designed and manufactured flow reversal valve system that can prevent condenser tube fouling. This is a major advantage over conventional systems in respect of system down times, ease of maintenance and capital costs.

Basic Constructional Concepts

The Fouress – Boving 4 – way flow reversal valves come with and without cylindrical strainer elements. The valve had inlet and outlet ports for the flow of cooling water into and out of the valve and a pair of transfer ports into and out of the valve for the flow of cooling water to and from the condenser.

Incorporated within the valve body is an elliptically shaped butterfly blade which is alternately positioned to direct the cooling water from the normal onlet side of the condenser to the normal outlet side, thus reversing the flow. By operating in an intermediate position, these valves can be used foe condenser flow regulation, thus eliminating the need of a separate throttling valve in the cooling water circuit.

The Fouress-Boving discharge regulator is a fixed cone valve with a movable sleeve. Such valves are typically installed on the terminal installed on the terminal end of a pressure conduit and convert the potential energy of water under pressure to the kinetic energy of water in free discharge. The movable sleeve functions as a variable area nozzle, therefore, the valve is useful not only for the dissipation of hydraulic energy, but for flow control as well.

Figure 1 is a schematic cross-section through the valve. The body is cylindrical and flanged at the upstream end for connection to the conduit. The body cylinder is connected to a downstream dispersing cone by a streamlined radial ribs forming an equally sized series of discharge ports. Flow control is effected by a reinforced stainless steel lined cylindrical gate which slides over copper alloy glide strips to close the discharge ports. Sealing is by metal-to-metal contact with a seat ring attached to the dispersing cone.

The dispersing cone thus transforms the discharging jet of water into a hollow divergent cone in which the kinetic energy is dissipated by air friction if discharged to atmosphere, or by turbulence if operating submerged.

By virtue of its axial hydraulic balance, the valve gate is subject to negligible end loads and consequently requires relatively small operating forces to overcome piston seal sliding friction and operate smoothly over the full valve stroke.

SIMPLEX – Fitted to the periphery of the blade is a series of flexible metallic looped and leaf-spring sealing elements. These seals are constructed of austenitic stainless steel or high nickel alloys, depending on the operating conditions. They are designed to seal against both continuous landing bars in the duct framework of the Isolator and to provide a sealing margin of at least 30 mm. The metallic seals alone, give a sealing efficiency of 99.95% or better, on cross-sectional area.

DUPLEX – 100% tightness, required to ensure complete safety for maintenance personnel working in an isolated section, is attained by creating, with a small fan, an air barrier in the inter space between the two sealing surfaces. The pressure zone, set at approximately 50 mm. H2O above the expected duct pressure, does not pump them up. This sealing arrangement has the additional advantage that it provides an automatic venting arrangement if there is a sudden pressure surge. Thus if the first sealing surface pushed off, the second, nearest the isolated section, is pressed even tighter against its landing surface and the gases are vented to atmosphere through the fan.

Safety and reliability have been a challenge in today’s coal fired boilers at thermal power stations. FOURESS, in technical consultation with a few discerning customers have developed the perfect solution to the pressing problem of effective isolation of PF mills. This has been done with the ingenious concept of TWIN SEAL FLAP (TSF) Isolator, which guarantees 100% sealing efficiency for safe access to on-load maintenance of PF mills.

Majority of the coal fired boilers in India use guillotine gates as Isolating equipment for PF mills. This technology has become out dated owing to its ill-equipped provisions. As such, Maintenance Engineers on the site face a host of problems, some of which are as follows :

  • Existing guillotine gates do not use an effective sealing system. This results in leakage of gas to the downstream. High velocity coal laden gas further aggravates the leakage making it virtually impossible for maintenance personnel to take up on-load maintenance. Thus an additional blanking plate becomes essential.
  • The entire operational area gets polluted due to transit leakage during operation of the guillotine gate.
  • There is frequent failure of cylinder seals owing to heat radiation during operation.
  • Guillotine gates often get jammed because of high temperature (warping), mainly due to narrow guides and improver bearings.
  • To put an end to these crippling problems, FOURESS devised a simple product called TWIN SEAL FLAP (TSF), which provides the precise solution to the above mentioned drawbacks in guillotine gates The perfect Isolator, TWIN SEAL FLAP has provided its efficacy, ever since its first installation at Koradi Thermal Power Station in 1982 and subsequent installations of over a 100 units in a number of Thermal Power Stations in India.
