Power system disturbances can be the result of various system events, transmission congestion, fluctuations in renewable energy sources and black outs. With increased number of black outs happening in the country, there is a great interest and increased requirement to implement Wide Area Monitoring Systems across the transmission and distribution grids. To better understand these disturbances and detect system events before they result in failures.

One of the important devices of the Wide Area Measurement System is Phasor Measurement technology, commonly known as PMU technology, which allows operators to accurately analyze the state of power system based on real time data collected from PMUs locate across the electrical network. These Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) technology provides Phasor information (both magnitude and phase angle) in real time. The advantage of referring phase angle to a global reference time is helpful in capturing the wide area snap shot of the power system.
