A graduate of mining engineering from Sagar University and a Ph.D. holder from University of Roorkee , Dr. A.K. Dube joined Central Mining Research Institute in 1964 and retired as its Director in June 2000. Subsequently, he has been Emeritus Scientist at Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi , till Nov. 2006. Dr. Dube is an expert of mining and underground space technology of international repute. He has been associated with research in the field of tunnelling and mining under difficult geo-mining conditions. He was consultant to major hydroelectric projects of the country and had been instrumental in solving intricate tunnelling problem in the Himalayan region. His recent contributions are related to underground storage of crude oil and its products, under ground traffic bypass, road and rail tunnels, nuclear waste disposal and underground storage. He also specializes in the environmental aspects of major river valley and mining projects. During his tenure as Director CMRI, he initiated and strengthened the scientific studies related to coal bed methane, a new and emerging area in view of potentials within Indian coalfields. As Emeritus Scientist, Dr. Dube conducted studies related to underground civic facilities in Delhi area, which include traffic bypass, parking lots, commodity storage and water storage. Information is also being collected to prepare a sub surface Geotechnical map of Delhi , which may be very useful for planning of city in the years to come. A book entitled “Third Dimension of Development” is also being written, to be used as a reference book on the subject. The issue of biological rehabilitation of abandoned mines is also being studied with a view to use them for social good. Dr. Dube has visited USA , UK , France , Sweden , Italy , Switzerland , Czech and Slovak republics, Hong Kong , Japan , Russia and China on lecture tours and project work. He had about 100 technical papers to his credit besides about 50 projects reports. Dr. Dube has served as member for Forest Advisory Committee, Ministry of Environment & Forest, Govt of India. He had been member of various other committees appointed by government departments for advising the government on important matters.
