Assessments And Therapy

At Counseling India, Testing and Assessment need not take time away from learning; assessments can be learning experiences in themselves.

Enumerated below are some of the assessments that we use at Counseling India. The assessments help the client and us to understand the client better, arrive at the right diagnosis and ensure that the counseling begins on the right path.

Educational Assessment

IQ/Achievement Tests: IQ tests are measures of intelligence, while achievement tests are measures of the use and level of development of the ability. IQ (or cognitive) tests and achievement tests are common norm-referenced tests. In these types of tests, a series of tasks is presented to the person being evaluated, and the person’s responses are graded according to carefully prescribed guidelines. After the test is completed, the results can be compiled and compared to the responses of a norm group, usually comprised of people at the same age or grade level as the person being evaluated. IQ tests which contain a series of tasks typically divide the tasks into verbal (relying on the use of language) and performance, or non-verbal (relying on eye-hand types of tasks, or use of symbols or objects). Examples of verbal IQ test tasks are vocabulary and information (answering general knowledge questions). Non-verbal examples are timed completion of puzzles (object assembly), making designs out of colored blocks (block design).

Behavioral Assessment

Conners Comprehensive Behavior Rating Scales: The new Conners Comprehensive Behavior Rating Scales™ (Conners CBRS™) is an instrument designed to provide a complete overview of child and adolescent disorders and concerns. The Conners CBRS includes (DSM-IV-TR™) symptom scales, empirical and rational scales, as well as other clinical indicators and critical and impairment items. The age range suitable for this assessment is 6 to 18 years for parent and teacher forms and 8 to 18 years for self-report forms. Conners CBRS is a comprehensive multi-informant tool that aids in diagnosis, intervention planning and monitoring the effectiveness of the treatment plans. Key areas measured: Emotional distress: total, upsetting thoughts, worrying, social problems, upsetting thoughts/physical symptoms, separation fears, social anxiety; Aggressive behaviors; Academic Difficulties: total, language, math, Hyperactivity/Impulsivity; Separation Fears; Social Problems; Perfectionistic and Compulsive Behaviors.

CPC: The Children’s Problems Checklist is completed by the parent or guardian of children in the 5-12 age range. The checklist consists of 190 items which survey 11 problem areas: emotions, self-concept, peers/play, school, language-thinking, concentration-organization, activity level-motor control, behavior, values, habits, and health.

APC: Adolescent Problem Checklist is filled out by the teenager between the ages of 13-17. It is a self-report intake form to understand what the adolescent thinks about his psychological, social and behavioral issues as well as cognitive status. This form combined with a parental interview and clinical observation of the client leads to efficient diagnostication and effective therapeutic intervention.

 Communication problems
• Balancing the demands of home and work
• Misbehavior or school problems in a child
• The loss of a family member
• Childhood traumas
• Conflicts in blended or remarriage families
• Step-parenting problems
• Family violence
• Substance abuse

You may also wish to see a family and parent counselor to enhance your family relationships by learning such skills as effective
communication, conflict resolution, assertiveness, and time management.

Parent counseling is recommended when there is a lack of congruence between parents about how to raise the children. Overt as well as covert differences in parenting processes and policies can affect the children and lead to many childhood and adolescent behavior issues

Family counseling is a type of psychotherapy that may have one or more objectives. Family counseling may help to promote better relationships and understanding within a family. It may be incident specific, as for example family counseling during a divorce, or the approaching death of a family member. Alternately family counseling may address the needs of the family when one family member suffers from a mental or physical illness that alters his or her behavior or habits in negative ways.
