operating voltage

  • The microcontroller on the Arduino Nano 33 IoT runs at 3.3V, which means that you must never apply more than 3.3V to its Digital and Analog pins. Care must be taken when connecting sensors and actuators to assure that this limit of 3.3V is never exceeded. Connecting higher voltage signals, like the 5V commonly used with the other Arduino boards, will damage the Arduino Nano 33 IoT.
  • To avoid such risk with existing projects, where you should be able to pull out a Nano and replace it with the new Nano 33 IoT, we have the 5V pin on the header, positioned between RST and A7 that is not connected as default factory setting. This means that if you have a design that takes 5V from that pin, it won't work immediately, as a precaution we put in place to draw your attention to the 3.3V compliance on digital and analog inputs.
  • 5V on that pin is available only when two conditions are met: you make a solder bridge on the two pads marked as VUSB and you power the NANO 33 IoT through the USB port. If you power the board from the VIN pin, you won't get any regulated 5V and therefore even if you do the solder bridge, nothing will come out of that 5V pin. The 3.3V, on the other hand, is always available and supports enough current to drive your sensors. Please make your designs so that sensors and actuators are driven with 3.3V and work with 3.3V digital IO levels. 5V is now an option for many modules and 3.3V is becoming the standard voltage for electronic ICs.

The Mega Pro Embed CH340G / ATmega2560 board is based on the ATmega2560 microcontroller. Built on the Atmel ATmega2560 microcontroller and USB-UART interface chip CH340G. This is a great solution to get your final project on the welding prototype board.

The Mega Pro Embed functionalities are identical to the Mega 2560. Even though it is an Embed board, it is solid as stable as the Mega Board. It uses the original chip, and 16 MHz high-quality quartz resonators are present on the board. The board uses the chip CH340G as the converter UART-USB. It provides a stable data exchange result when you work at a frequency of 12Mhz (requires the driver to be installed on the computer).

You can power the board or power the pins through the MicroUSB connector. The voltage regulator (LDO) can handle input voltages from 6V to 9V (peak 18V) DC. The voltage regulator allows to use up to 18V as an input value, however, we do not recommend exceeding the recommended values aforementioned, since this can lead to excessive heat and damage the device.

Overview

The Arduino Mega 2560 is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega2560. It has 54 digital input/output pins (of which 15 can be used as PWM outputs), 16 analog inputs, 4 UARTs (hardware serial ports), a 16 MHz crystal oscillator, a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started. The Mega 2560 board is compatible with most shields designed for the Uno and the former boards Duemilanove or Diecimila.

The Mega 2560 is an update to the Arduino Mega, which it replaces.

  • This manual describes the operation of the XBee/XBee-PRO Zigbee RF Module, which consists of Zigbee firmware loaded onto XBee S2C and PRO S2C hardware. The XBee/XBee-PRO Zigbee RF Modules provide wireless connectivity to end-point devices in Zigbee mesh networks. Using the Zigbee PRO Feature Set, these modules are inter-operable with other Zigbee devices, including devices from other vendors. With the XBee, users can have their Zigbee network up-and-running in a matter of minutes without configuration or additional development. The XBee/XBee-PRO Zigbee RF Modules are compatible with other devices that use XBee Zigbee technology. Raspberry Pi Camera Module

There are two versions of the Camera Module:

  • The standard version, which is designed to take pictures in normal light
  • The NoIR version, which doesn’t have an infrared filter, so you can use it together with an infrared light source to take pictures in the dark.
Connect the Camera ModuleEnsure your Raspberry Pi is turned off.
  • Locate the Camera Module port
  • Gently pull up on the edges of the port’s plastic clip
  • Insert the Camera Module ribbon cable; make sure the connectors at the bottom of the ribbon cable are facing the contacts in the port.
  • Push the plastic clip back into place.
  • Start up your Raspberry Pi.

  • Go to the main menu and open the Raspberry Pi Configuration tool.

How to control the Camera Module via the command line

  • Now your Camera Module is connected and the software is enabled, try out the command line tools raspistill and raspivid.

  • Type in the following command to take a still picture and save it to the Desktop:
  • Press Enter to run the command.
  • When the command runs, you can see the camera preview open for five seconds before a still picture is taken.
  • Look for the picture file icon on the Desktop, and double-click the file icon to open the picture.
  • By adding different options, you can set the size and look of the image the raspistill command takes.
  • For example, add -h and -w to change the height and width of the image
  • raspistill -o Desktop/image-small.jpg -w 640 -h 480
  • Now record a video with the Camera Module by using the following raspivid command:
    raspivid -o Desktop/video.h264
  • In order to play the video file, double-click the video.h264 file icon on the Desktop to open it in VLC Media Player.
  • For more information and other options you can use with these commands, read the documentation for raspistill and the documentation for raspivid.

How to control the Camera Module with Python code
  • The Python picamera library allows you to control your Camera Module and create amazing projects.
  • Open a Python 3 editor, such as Thonny Python IDE:

  • Open a new file and save it as camera.py.

  • Note: it’s important that you never save the file as picamera.py.

  • Enter the following code

  • Save and run your program. The camera preview should be shown for five seconds and then close again.

  • Note: the camera preview only works when a monitor is connected to your Raspberry Pi. If you are using remote access (such as SSH or VNC), you won’t’ see the camera preview.

Overview

The Arduino Uno Rev3 SMD is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328. It has 14 digital input/output pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM outputs), 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz ceramic resonator (CSTCE16M0V53-R0), a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started.

The Uno differs from all preceding boards in that it does not use the FTDI USB-to-serial driver chip.

Additional features coming with the R3 version are:

  • ATmega16U2 instead 8U2 as USB-to-Serial converter.
  • 1.0 pinout: added SDA and SCL pins for TWI communication placed near to the AREF pin and two other new pins placed near to the RESET pin, the IOREF that allow the shields to adapt to the voltage provided from the board and the second one is a not connected pin, that is reserved for future purposes.

While you’ll eventually need to learn to control DC motors in order to build your own robot, you’ll probably need something a little easier to get started – which is where the L298N motor driver comes in. It can control the speed and spinning direction of two DC motors.

In addition, it can control a bipolar stepper motor, such as the NEMA 17. If you want to learn more about it, check out this tutorial.

Controlling a DC Motor
We can only have full control over a DC motor if we can control its speed and spinning direction. This is possible by combining these two techniques.
PWM – to control speedH-Bridge – to control the spinning direction

PWM – to control speed

The speed of a DC motor can be controlled by changing its input voltage. A widely used technique to accomplish this is Pulse Width Modulation (PWM).

PWM is a technique in which the average value of the input voltage is adjusted by sending a series of ON-OFF pulses. This average voltage is proportional to the width of the pulses, which is referred to as the Duty Cycle.

The higher the duty cycle, the higher the average voltage applied to the DC motor, resulting in an increase in motor speed. The shorter the duty cycle, the lower the average voltage applied to the DC motor, resulting in a decrease in motor speed.

H-Bridge – to control the spinning direction

The spinning direction of a DC motor can be controlled by changing the polarity of its input voltage. A widely used technique to accomplish this is to use an H-bridge.
An H-bridge circuit is made up of four switches arranged in a H shape, with the motor in the center.

Closing two specific switches at the same time reverses the polarity of the voltage applied to the motor. This causes a change in the spinning direction of the motor.

The following animation shows the working of the H-bridge circuit.

L298N Motor Driver Chip

At the center of the module is a big, black chip with a chunky heat sink – the L298N.

The L298N chip contains two standard H-bridges capable of driving a pair of DC motors, making it ideal for building a two-wheeled robotic platform.

The L298N motor driver has a supply range of 5V to 35V and is capable of 2A continuous current per channel, so it works very well with most of our DC motors.

L298N Motor Driver Module Pinout

The L298N module has 11 pins that allow it to communicate with the outside world. The pinout is as follows:
Power Pins
The L298N motor driver module receives power from a 3-pin, 3.5mm-pitch screw terminal.

The L298N motor driver has two input power pins: VS and VSS.

VS pin powers the IC’s internal H-Bridge, which drives the motors. This pin accepts input voltages ranging from 5 to 12V.

VSS is used to power the logic circuitry within the L298N IC, and can range between 5V and 7V.

GND is the common ground pin.

Output Pins

The output channels of the L298N motor driver, OUT1 and OUT2 for motor A and OUT3 and OUT4 for motor B, are broken out to the edge of the module with two 3.5mm-pitch screw terminals. You can connect two 5-12V DC motors to these terminals.

Each channel on the module can supply up to 2A to the DC motor. The amount of current supplied to the motor, however, depends on the capacity of the motor power supply.
Direction Control Pins
The direction control pins allow you to control whether the motor rotates forward or backward. These pins actually control the switches of the H-Bridge circuit within the L298N chip.
