Eyes Cataract Treatment Service
Treatment of cataract

The only treatment for cataract is surgical intervention through which the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens. A cataract can be operated at any stage. In India, there is a myth that cataract's should only be operated when "mature". This may actually lead to complications.

Cataract surgery
Cataract surgeries are microsurgeries and are broadly categorized into two:

a. Extra capsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE): This involves removing the cloudy lens in one piece leading to a large incision of 10 to 12 mm on the eye. Through this incision, the artificial lens is also implanted and then the cut is sutured.

b. Phacoemulsification (Phaco): This is the latest advance in cataract removal wherein a small ultrasonic probe is inserted into the eye through a cut of 3.2mm or less. This probe breaks (emulsifies) the cloudy lens into tiny pieces and gently sucks these out of the eye. The surgeon then implants the replacement lens through this cut.

Eyes Glaucoma Treatment Service
Chronic Open Angle glaucoma
As there are hardly any symptoms, the patient is largely unaware that there is a progressive loss of vision. The only way of diagnosis is through periodic eye examinations.

Congenital Glaucoma
This is visible literally from birth. Since the eye of an infant is more elastic than that of an adult, the increase of pressure leads to the eye bulging out.

Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma
This is a sudden onset. Blurred vision, severe pain, rainbow haloes around light, nausea and vomiting are the immediate symptoms. Unless medical attention is provided immediately, blindness can result in a day or two.

Anybody over the age of 40 years is susceptible to Glaucoma. That’s why it is advised that people above 40 should go in for an ophthalmologic examination every 6 months.

Glaucoma is usually controlled with eye drops or oral medication given in various combinations. These medications act to decrease the eye pressure either by assisting flow of fluid outside the eye or by decreasing the amount of fluid entering the eye. If medication is poorly tolerated or not effective in controlling the intra-ocular pressure, surgery is done to create an artificial drainage channel for the fluid to drain out.

Eyes Lasik Treatment Service

Need of Lasik

Refractive errors are a common condition of the eye and are found in all age groups. In normal circumstances the cornea converges light rays on the lens of the eye, which further converges them onto the light sensitive retina at the back of the eye. The retina with the help of the optic nerve transmits a clear image or photo to the brain.

In patients suffering from refractive errors, the cornea is unable to converge the light rays adequately. Consequently, the rays converge either before the retina (people with – powers) or after the retina (people with + powers). In both the cases, people cannot see clearly.

The common correction for refractive errors is spectacles or contact lens. However, both of these though popular have certain limitations. New advances in eye care and laser technology has led to a permanent cure for refraction, popularly known as LASIK (Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis). This is a short and completely painless surgery of 10-15 minutes where the surgeon corrects the shape or the thickness of the cornea through a laser.

Conditions that could be corrected by Lasik

  • Myopia or short sightedness, which occurs due to focusing of rays before the retina while viewing distant objects. As a consequence, there is blurred vision. Myopia is often hereditary resulting out of an abnormally large eyeball or steeply curved cornea.
  • Hypermetropia or farsightedness, which occurs due to light rays converging beyond the retina. Near objects are blurred while distant objects are clear.
  • Astigmatism or irregularity in the shape of the normally spherical cornea. Irregular shape leads to distortion of both distance and near vision.

You need Lasik if,

  • You do not want to wear spectacles or contact lenses.
  • You feel visually or physically restricted by contact lenses or spectacles.
  • You want to participate in outdoor sports and contact sports where wearing spectacles or contact lens may constrict your body movement.
  • You want to join certain profession where uncorrected visual acuity is a prerequisite.
Things to watch out for in Lasik
  • The patient has to be above 18 years of age.
  • There should not have been a significant change in the spectacle prescription in the last 12 months.
  • A proper clinical evaluation that necessarily includes a measurement of the thickness of the cornea.
