Toothbrushing - Brushing Technique
  • Brush with a small, vigorous circular action or use an electric toothbrush.
  • Try and brush in an ordered sequence starting with the inside surfaces first as they are the most awkward to reach.
  • Move along one tooth at a time with the brush head angled 45 degrees towards the gum line to ensure nowhere is missed.
  • Be careful to brush right down to the gum level as this is where most plaque builds up.

Flossing Technique
  • Use a ruler length piece of floss, wind floss around your middle fingers to keep it taut. Then place the floss over the tips of your first fingers to reach your back teeth.
  • Floss your top front teeth by placing it over the tip of one finger and one thumb.
  • Ease the floss between your teeth with a gentle sawing action and then clean with an up and down movement, ensuring you curve the floss round each side of each tooth and place the floss slightly below the gum line.

Mouthwashes
Few people have such a thorough brushing and flossing routine that they would not benefit from the use of mouthwash. An excellent daily mouthwash can help eliminate food debris and bacteria that has not all been removed by brushing and flossing and can be very effective at combating bad breath.
Other mouthwashes are particularly helpful in preventing decay in those prone to recurrent problems or in treating acute gum infections when necessary.

Tongue Cleaning
Tongue cleaning is an important part of your oral hygiene and fresh breath program. The back of the tongue is a reservoir for organisms that cause gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath. A tongue cleaner can be used to gently sweep this substance away to reduce the bacteria in your mouth and freshen your breath, alongside a retardex oral spray and mouth rinse.

Products
We stock an extensive range of dental care products. Each item has been carefully rated, and we will be happy to advise on the best product for you. Here is a small selection.

Hygienist Appointment
We offer a number of different hygiene fresh breath packages. With the best will in the world it is still difficult to eradicate plaque and prevent the build up of tartar completely. We strongly recommend visiting the hygienist for a professional dental cleaning session every 3 to 6 months. If you have had porcelain veneers or crown and bridgework you will need to attend our hygienist at least twice a year to extend your guarantee to up to 5 years.

Dental Implant

Get Latest Price

Implants are the modern way to replace missing teeth. The implant, which is made of titanium, is fitted in bone where the tooth root would normally be. When fully integrated to the bone, a post (or abutment) is attached to the implant and a crown, bridge or denture is then placed over the abutment to replace the missing tooth or teeth.

Dental implants are fitted in-house at The Dr. Lal by our Implantologist. Missing teeth often lose some of the surrounding soft tissue and bone. If this is a significant amount, soft tissue and/or bone grafting may also be required either at the same time as implant placement or beforehand. Grafting procedures are also carried out in-house at the Dr. Lal by our implant specialists.
The big advantage of a single tooth implant over a bridge is that it can replace the tooth without interfering with teeth on either side, unlike a bridge. Bridge teeth are joined together and floss cannot be passed in between like natural teeth or implant crowns.
If multiple teeth are missing then very often there are not enough teeth to provide long term support to bridges anyway. Implants are therefore essential to support multiple implant crowns or implant supported bridges.
If most or all of the teeth are missing then implant supported dentures may be an option. For full denture wearers, retention is often a big problem as bone support recedes. Even the best fitting dentures can feel loose. A full upper denture also requires a large area over the palate to obtain suction which can interfere with taste and the enjoyment of food. Implant supported dentures on the other hand are firmly clipped in and do not require the palate to be covered for suction.
Dental implants are incorporated with other treatments such as crowns, bridges and veneers as part of full smile makeovers or full mouth reconstructions following the same processes of smile design.

Creating Perfect Smile

Step 1
Major changes to the smile can often be completed in only 2 visits using porcelain veneers, crowns or bridgework. Results are totally predictable. Here's how:
Design your smile with computer imaging. We'll help you choose your ideal smile and show you how it would look using the latest computer technology. This is done at your first appointment, the cosmetic consultation.

Step 2
In all but the simplest case, we will transform the imaging picture into a 3D model. Not just on the computer but a model you can pick up and examine.
You can check the aesthetics from every angle, and we can check the function. All this is done before we touch a tooth.

Step 3
Now here's the really clever bit: When you are ready to proceed, the teeth are sculpted and temporaries placed that replicate the 3D model exactly. You can trial the proposed smile design in your own mouth, before anything is set in stone. These temporaries can be fine tuned to your precise requirements and any changes can be duplicated in the finished restorations.

Step 4
Final delivery of your new smile - exactly as we've planned it with you. Our master ceramist duplicates the smile design in the final restorations and adds the fine colour, surface anatomy and texture to bring your new smile to life! These miniature works of art look beautiful even close-up. It's time to get out there and show off your great new smile.

Lasting Beauty Comes From a Stable Bite
It is not enough for teeth just to look good. For comfort and longevity, they must be built into a stable bite that has even and protective contacts between teeth in the full range of chewing movements and they must allow the jaw joints and muscles to settle into a relaxed position at rest. Past dentistry such as incomplete orthodontics or a crown or filling on a back tooth that was left slightly high will often cause a problem if left unresolved. Sometimes people will grind their teeth and end up breaking an offending crown, but more often they will learn to rock their jaw forwards or to the side slightly to find a more comfortable bite position that avoids such 'high spots'. This can result in symptoms that can vary from wear and chipping of teeth, especially the front teeth, pain and sensitivity of teeth, jaw muscle pain and stiffness, jaw joint pops, clicks and pain and headaches.

It requires an in depth understanding of how all the elements of this system work together and some high-tech instrumentation to pick up on the early signs of these problems and plan the correct course of treatment. For example if you have a high spot on a back tooth that is causing wear of your front teeth, we could restore them and create a beautiful smile with porcelain veneers. But we must also treat the cause of the problem or the same wear would just continue.

Smile Design

Horizontal alignment
Ideally the smile line should be aligned so it is parallel to the horizontal. This tends to be preferable even when the eye line does not coincide with this level.

Symmetry
Symmetry around the centreline is of great importance for an aesthetically pleasing smile. Even when this is not 100% possible, the illusion of symmetry should be created. This can often be achieved by ensuring symmetry of the two front teeth and other teeth close to the midline. Further away from the midline, asymmetry is not so noticeable.

Smile line
The smile line connects the biting edges of the top teeth. Ideally this line should follow the curve of the lower lip. A flat smile line looks aged and worn. A curved smile line looks more youthful. Women tend to have more curved smile lines than men.

Gum line
The gum line connects the highest points of the gum levels of the upper teeth. Ideally this line should follow the line of the upper lip, to ensure reasonable gum exposure and optimum display of the teeth.

Smile width
A smile of normal width allows one to see the ideal progression from front to back teeth. In a narrow smile the side teeth are often in shadow so the front ones appear to stand alone.

Embrasures
Embrasures are the little triangular spaces between the tips of teeth. Without these, teeth would look like piano keys. Embrasure spaces should be smallest between the two front teeth and get gradually larger further back.

Golden proportions
The 'golden rules' of proportion are made to be broken but they do provide an excellent starting point. These rules describe an ideal ratio of the visible widths of the front six teeth: 1.6:1.0:0.6

Tooth Proportion
There are also guidelines as to the ideal proportion of each individual tooth. For example the recommended ideal width to height ratio for the two front teeth is: 0.7:1.

Nothing beats a sincere and honest smile. Throughout your day-to-day life an enhanced smile can give you more confidence and enable you to feel happier along with making the best impression.
If you're after a smile that enhances your appearance, Invisible braces are the treatment for you. Despite the many orthodontic options out there, no alternative works with the ease of invisible clear braces. Invisible braces are the optimum way to change your smile without affecting your lifestyle.

Invisalign
Invisalign can help you achieve the smile you have always wanted. It is...
  • Invisible: so no one can tell you're straightening your teeth. So now you can smile more during treatment as well as after.
  • Removable: so you can eat and drink whatever you like whilst undergoing treatment and brush/floss as normal.
  • Comfortable: as it is metal free and inobtrusive.

How Does Invisalign Work?
Each set of clear aligners is worn for 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. The aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours per day for the best results.
As each aligner is replaced by the next, the teeth will move gradually until they have straightened to the final position.
You will visit your orthodontist once every 6-8 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.
Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is 18-30, but this will vary from case to case

The Damon System is not just about revolutionary braces and wires, it's a whole new way of treating patients. Traditional treatment often requires removal of healthy teeth and/or the use of palatal expanders to make space. This approach is often uncomfortable, takes longer, and can leave a narrower arch and a flat profile. Damon smiles are full, natural 10-tooth smiles achieved with light biologically-sensible forces, and are specifically designed to improve the overall facial result of each patient.

Damon braces combine three key components, which when used together, deliver faster treatment, fewer appointments, greater comfort, and consistent high-quality results:
  • Damon passive self-ligating braces that eliminate the need for elastic or metal "ties". With Damon tie-less braces you can experience treatment without tightening.
  • Light high-technology shape-memory wires that move teeth faster and require fewer adjustments.
  • A new clinically proven treatment approach that aligns your teeth and enhances your facial aesthetics—usually without extractions or rapid palatal expanders.

Porcelain Veneers

A veneer is a new front surface for a tooth, custom made from porcelain. Veneers are extremely versatile and can be used to align crowding or protruding teeth, close gaps or lighten tooth colour. The strength and appearance of our porcelain veneers rivals that of natural teeth and they're used to make long lasting changes to the smile.

Our porcelain veneers carry an exclusive five year guarantee
Porcelain veneers can be used to mask a single dark tooth but more often are used as part of smile makeover. At the Dr. Lal our smile makeovers start at the consultation where we find out what clients don't like about their teeth and what type of smile is required. Computer aided smile design is then used to design the smile and to fine tune the required tooth shapes and colour to the client's wishes.
When the client is ready to proceed with treatment the next step is to create a 3d preview model. Our ceramist uses the computer aided smile design to create this 3d version of the smile design so it can be checked from all angles for aesthetics and function.
Porcelain veneers are then provided as planned over two main treatment appointments. At the first appointment the teeth are prepared. This process involves trimming back a thin layer from the front surface and biting edge to make space for the veneer. Impressions are taken and temporary veneers are made using a template made from the 3d preview model. Importantly, this gives our patients an opportunity to trial the planned smile design in their own mouths before the veneers are made. Any changes or fine adjustments can be made to the temporaries and reproduced in the final veneers. All veneers are made with this technique at the Dr. Lal.
These treatments are all carried out using our pain-free anesthetic techniques. Clients can relax and watch DVD’s with our DVD goggle in-chair entertainment system.
Porcelain veneers are then fitted at the second main treatment appointment. Our veneers are fitted with a multi-layer bonding system that bonds the veneers to the teeth with unparalleled strength. The veneers are polished and bite checked and then revealed to our patients. We also see our patients a few days later to check all is well when they've had some time to use them and eat with them. On that appointment we also take portrait photos for our clients to take away with them.

Tooth Replacement

Tooth Replacement

Get Latest Price

Missing teeth can be replaced with bridges, implants or even dentures. Bridges and implants can be used in combination with the latest soft tissue management techniques to make replacement teeth appear to emerge from the gums like natural teeth.
Bridges can either be supported by the surrounding teeth or by implants. Bridges are relatively quick and inexpensive when retained by natural teeth. The disadvantage is that the teeth that are used to support the bridge may need to be trimmed right down to make room for the bridge. Bridges have teeth that are linked together so you can't floss between them like natural teeth, although you can still floss or clean underneath them with small brushes.
Implants are the modern way to replace missing teeth. An implant is placed in bone where the tooth root would have originally been. When it has fused to the bone it can be restored with individual crowns, or bridges or can be used to retain dentures. They are relatively more expensive and require time whilst they integrate with bone. However they form a very solid platform to support further restoration and when used to replace a single missing tooth, or multiple teeth with separate crowns you will be able to floss between them like natural teeth.
Traditional full dentures are often loose and cover large areas such as the whole palate which interferes with speech, with taste and the enjoyment of food. At the Dr. Lal we only provide implant supported dentures which clip firmly to supporting implants. These dentures are much smaller and do not cover the palate and they can be smile designed just like any other cosmetic or smile makeover case

Smile Makeover

Get Latest Price

As the name suggests a smile makeover is a new smile that has been designed to look better in many ways. It may align crowded teeth, close gaps, reduce protrusion, whiten, reduce a gummy smile, widen a narrow smile, change the length or shape of teeth, replace missing teeth or any combination of the above. A smile makeover usually involves at least the top eight or ten teeth and sometimes the lower eight or ten teeth too. The most frequent treatments used in a smile makeover are multiple porcelain veneers because they are the most conservative restoration and because they are strong and highly aesthetic.

However, porcelain crowns, bridges, implants and even implant supported dentures can also be part of a smile makeover depending on the case. Smile makeovers can also involve rapid orthodontics using Inman aligners to either prealign teeth prior to multiple porcelain veneers or to align minor crowding of the lower teeth when only the upper teeth are to be veneered. If upper teeth only are being treated with veneers then lower teeth are usually at least whitened.

Consultation with Computer aided smile design
At the Dr. Lal, our Smile makeovers all involve a design stage using computer aided smile design. This is a process in which a photo of a patients teeth are redesigned using powerful graphics software. Patients can help design their own perfect smile.
The next step in a smile makeover is to take impressions and for the master ceramist to create a 3d model from the smile design. These models are used to check the aesthetics and function from every angle.

Trial smile and final smile makeover
When the teeth are prepared for the veneers or crowns, temporaries are then placed using a template made from the 3d preview. This gives patients the opportunity to trial their smile makeover before anything is set in stone. Any changes are easy to build into the final veneers which are fitted at the following appointment.
This step by step process is routinely used at the Dr. Lal for every smile makeover case. It makes our smile makeovers highly predictable and uniquely fine-tuned to the individual.

Teeth Straightening

Teeth Straightening

Get Latest Price

Teeth can be straightened using either orthodontics or porcelain veneers or a combination of both. Only mild to moderate crowding or protrusion can be aligned with veneers alone, but orthodontics can straighten any teeth, however severely misaligned. Combination treatments are ideal for crowded and misaligned teeth that are also heavily worn, discolored or broken down.

Orthodontic options to straighten teeth
  • Inman aligner: The Inman aligner is the fastest way to straighten teeth with a removable appliance. It is excellent for aligning mainly just crowding of the front four teeth. For adults this the most common form of crowding so it can be used in many different cases. Treatment times typically take from 6 to 16 weeks.
  • Invisalign: Invisalign use a very high-tech manufacturing process to make a series of removable clear plastic aligners which makes them almost invisible. Invisalign can straighten teeth over a slightly broader range of cases than the Inman aligner but still cannot be used for severe crowding. Invisalign has the added advantage of having little effect on speech. However, treatment times are typically from 6 to 18 months.
  • Lingual braces: These are like conventional fixed braces except the brackets are bonded to the inside of the teeth so they are invisible to others. Lingual braces can be used to straighten teeth from almost all case types. Treatment times vary depending on case type typically from 6 to 24 months.

Porcelain veneers to straighten teeth
Teeth can be straightened using porcelain veneers as part of a smile makeover. Porcelain veneers are a thin layer of porcelain that are a new front surface for a tooth. Teeth are prepared by trimming a thin layer from the enamel on the front of the tooth, just enough to make space for the veneer. If teeth are crowded, some teeth or parts of teeth protrude more than others. To straighten the teeth, more is trimmed back from those areas that protrude so that when the veneers are placed on these teeth it will have the appearance of having straightened them.
The advantage of this approach is that it is very quick with treatments being completed in as little as 2 weeks. Many other aesthetic improvements can be made at the same time such as changing the length, the overall shape and whitening the teeth. The smile can be designed and tailored using computer aided smile design and a process is used which creates very predictable and beautiful results.
The disadvantage of this approach is that very crowded or protruding teeth may need significant amounts of their tooth structure to be trimmed back.

Full Reconstruction

What is a full mouth reconstruction?
When you have many broken, worn and/or multiple missing teeth, then a full mouth reconstruction may be required. This will often require every tooth to be restored with a combination of veneers, crowns, inlays, onlays, dental implants and dental bridgework.
At the Dr. Lal we have the experience and expertise to bring together the various advanced dental disciplines required to create full mouth reconstructions that not only look great but they function correctly, are healthy and will last for many years to come.

What does full mouth reconstruction involve?
The key to a successful full mouth reconstruction is thorough planning. At the Dr. Lal we have extensive post-graduate training from the UK and USA specifically in the provision of full mouth reconstructions. Here is how it’s done:

  • Examination: A thorough examination of the teeth, gums, supporting bone, muscles and jaw joint/ TMJ is essential. The latest technology helps us identify and explain what dentistry is required in your full mouth reconstruction and why. Digital photography, Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA) and TekScan bite analysis are often crucial to plan and communicate your treatment needs.
  • Computer Aided Smile Design: It’s vital that your full mouth reconstruction not only functions perfectly but looks great. Our extensive experience in cosmetic dentistry allows us to perfectly combine form and function. The latest in Computer Aided Smile Design technology allows us to discuss and show you the aesthetic outcome before we touch a tooth.
  • 3D Preview: Detailed impressions and bite records allow us to transform the imaging picture into a 3D model. Not just on the computer but a model you can pick up and examine. You can check the aesthetics from every angle, and we can check the function. This is an essential step in the planning of predictable full mouth reconstructions.
  • Temporaries: After teeth are prepared for your full mouth reconstruction temporaries are placed that replicate the 3D model exactly. You can trial the proposed full mouth reconstruction in your own mouth, before anything is finalised. These temporaries can be fine tuned to your precise aesthetic and functional requirements and any changes can be duplicated in the finished restorations.
  • Fitting your full mouth reconstruction: exactly as we've planned it with you! Our master ceramist duplicates the smile design and function (from the temporaries and 3D model) in the final restorations and adds the fine colour, surface anatomy and texture to bring your new full mouth reconstruction to life.

White Fillings
At Dr. Lal we have the experience and expertise to bring together the various advanced dental disciplines required create white fillings that not only look great but they function correctly, are healthy and will last for many years to come.
Modern white fillings are a combination of a resin and nano-particles of glass. This combination gives white fillings their dental name; composite resins.
White Fillings can be used to replace decay, just like silver fillings or replace old silver fillings for cosmetic reasons.
The enhanced cosmetics are the main benefit of white fillings, they can look just like natural teeth. Many people are also concerned about the potential risks of mercury containing silver fillings.
On average White Fillings should last for 7-10 years. At Dr. Lal we advise that white fillings are best when the cavity/ filling to be replaced is small to medium in size. When a larger filling is required a porcelain inlay or porcelain onlay is a better option.

Porcelain Inlays / Porcelain Onlays
Porcelain inlays or porcelain onlays are fillings made of porcelain that fit into or onto the tooth. They are indicated when there is too little tooth structure to predictably support a white filling but there is enough tooth to avoid placing a crown, which is more destructive to the tooth.
Porcelain inlays / porcelain onlays take 2 visits to complete. The first session is when the decay or old filling is painlessly removed, a detailed impression is taken and a type of white filling is placed as a temporary. Our master ceramist then creates the custom made porcelain inlay or porcelain onlay in the lab. The second session is 1-2 weeks later when we bond the porcelain inlay or porcelain onlay, which fits exactly, to the tooth.
The big advantage of porcelain inlays / porcelain onlays is that they are that they are much more durable than white fillings, lasting up 30 years. Fillings often reduce the strength of a tooth but porcelain inlays / porcelain onlays can actually increase a tooth's strength.

When you have one or more missing teeth, then a dental bridge may be used to restore the resulting gaps. The dental bridge is basically a false tooth, beautifully created from porcelain that fills the gap and is supported by adjacent teeth or implants.
One of the most crucial skills in the placement of a dental bridge is to create the illusion that the missing tooth emerges from gum just a natural tooth. Our skills in cosmetic dentistry, gum manipulation and our in-house implantologist can combine ensure no-one will know that you ever had a missing tooth.
There are several types of bridge:

Traditional Fixed Dental Bridge
Here the “false tooth” is fused between two porcelain crowns to fill the gap left by a missing tooth. There are two crowns holding it in place attached onto your teeth either side of the false tooth. This type of dental bridge can be used to replace one or more missing teeth.

Cantilever Dental Bridge
In areas of your mouth that are under less stress, such as your front teeth, a cantilever dental bridge may be used. A cantilever dental bridge is when the “false tooth” is only supported on one side. The result is just as aesthetic but has the benefit that fewer teeth have to be treated.

Resin Bonded Dental Bridges / Maryland Dental Bridge
The type of dental bridge is almost always used for your front teeth. The main benefit of this type of dental bridge is that healthy teeth either side need either minimal or no preparation. The “false tooth” is fused to metal or ceramic “wings” that are bonded very firmly to the supporting or “abutment” teeth with a resin. The wings are hidden from view so that only the porcelain, which appears just like a natural tooth, is visible.

Implant Supported Dental bridges
Implants are the modern way to replace missing teeth. An implant is placed in the bone where the tooth root would have originally been. When it has fused to the bone it can be restored with individual crowns or, when more than one tooth is missing, with an implant supported dental bridge. Even if you have no teeth in one or both jaws, implants can be placed and an implant supported dental bridge securely fixed.
