EASTERN INDIA CINEMATOGRPHARS’ ASSOCIATION, that is where we all belong to, today. But if we look back into the history of its formation, we find, how, many dedicated cinematographers fought the struggle for survival. From the early 30’s, first ‘SILENT’ films and then ‘TALKIE’ films were being made in Calcutta, which over the years became the epi-center of film production in India. Bengali as well as Hindi films were produced by big production houses, who mostly owned the studios. Though some renowned Artists and technicians flourished, most of the other technicians required for any film production, were either ill-paid or not paid at all. The ‘opportunity’ or ‘chance’ to work in films was considered great and as such even meals and tiffins were not provided to them. Surviving through such insults and exploitations many die-hard technicians were somehow able to manage their days as ‘Apprentice’ and ‘Assistants’ to become as departmental heads someday and earn great names for themselves . But the need was always felt to have an organised body that would take care of the exploited technicians The first such body was the CINE TECHNICIANS ASSOCIATION OF BENGAL, but it did not have any craft–wise representation. Everyone was an individual member of it. Assistant cinematographers then took upon themselves to form a body that would not only look into interest of its member but would also educate them in their profession. It was in 1956 when K. A. Reza, Jhintoo Dutt, Deepak Das and a few others formed the SOCIETY OF ASSISTANT CINEMATOGRAPHERS, Though the sole objective was to protect the interest of the members, efforts were there to enrich knowledge by means of film-shows, discussions and information about new movie cameras and film stock. The first office of the society was at K. A. Reza’s residence at 15, Deodar Street, Calcutta - 700019. The first president of the society was Subrata Sen Sharma. It was also here, where K. A. Reza made available to the Society his personal 16mm Projector to show well-known foreign films After a couple of years, the office was shifted to a make –shift room in the India Film Laboratories, within the New Theatre Studios in Tollygung. Senior lab-in-charge R. B. Mehta had immensely helped the Society at that time and in those later years also. The activities were more organised now, like regular seminars and meetings, a small library was also commissioned and the subscription of the important film journal ‘The American Cinematographer’. Film shows were now organised by FILM SOCETY OF THE CINEMATOGRPHERS INDIA which was the only film society of its kind for the film technicians by the film techniciation where seniors and juniors were both members. Impressed by the activities of their Assistants, senior and veteran Cameraman took interest in the work of the society and suggested ways of screening and examining newcomers, so that the entry into the trade was more regulated and professionalised. Seniors were made presidents of the Society from time to time and it was a great moment for newcomers to have their ‘Observer’ or ‘Assistant’ cards signed by such great cinematographers like Ajoy Kar, Bibhuti Laha or Bimal Mukherjee. Meanwhile the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India was formed where most of the craft were represented as trade Union bodies. It was therefore felt that a new Association should be formed, under the Trade Union Act that will take into its fold the independent cameraman as well as the Assistants and look in to entire gamut of activities of the previous body. + Read More
