The Thies Laser distrometer is especially designed for the use in several applications and characterization of precipitation. Thanks to a multitude of measuring variables and configuration variants the use of a distrometer in various ranges of application is now possible.The optical laser basing measuring principle guarantees a reliable and accurate measurement of all known kinds of precipitation. It is possible to measure the amount, the intensity also as the particle size and the velocity of precipitation. A main advantage of the distrometer is to measure particles down to 0,16 mm diameter.

The distrometer detects and discriminates the different arts of precipitation as drizzle, rain, hail, snow, snow grains, graupel (small hail / snow pellets), and ice pellets with his reliable maintenance-free Laser optic. The distrometer calculates the intensity, volume (water equivalent) and the precipitation spectrum ( diameter and velocity) as well as the meteorological visibility (MOR) in the rain and the radar reflectivity (Z).


Latest state of the art technology like DSP, and high quality optical components stand for reliable, precise measurement and results in real-time. All data will be transmitted via a galvanic isolated RS485 interface to further processing. SYNOP according table 4680, and METAR according table 4678 are implemented.

The position of the wind vane is detected opto-electronically by a code disc. The digital measuring signals are transformed by an internal measuring transformer.

The output signals are available current or voltage signals. Another model is available with output of wind speed as frequency and as 8-bit-Gray-code(parallel) for wind directioy. The heating is controlled electronically. A plug connection is situated in the shaft of the instrument.

The measuring principle is in accordance to the “Guide to Meteorological Instruments No 8” of the WMO.

The precipitation is conducted into the tipping bucket via the collecting area and funnel. On achieving the maximum volumecapacity the bucket tips over. Each tipping event is acquired contract-free, is linearized, and output for further processing.

1.) The analogue output is available as accumulated value in proportion to the precipitation pulses. Here, the analogue value is reset automatically to zero mm precipitation in case of measuring value exceeding, or through an external pulse.2.) The analogue output can deliver the data as glidingaccumulated value over a selectable time (10/60 min., 6/24 h).
