An electrocardiogram (ECG / EKG) is recording of the electrical activity of the heart and is used to diagnose abnormal rhythm and insult to the heart due to lack of blood supply. ECG is the best non invasive, safe, painless and quick tool to identify abnormal rhythm and damaged heart muscle.

12 leads ECG graph is recorded on the paper or can be seen live on a screen. Doctor can read and interpret the ECG and can guide for further line of management.

Normal ECG can’t absolutely rule out abnormalities of heart.

Why Is It Done? Find the cause of unexplained chest pain which could be due to cardiac reason (heart attack, ischemia, inflammation of the heart muscle or sac surrounding the heart (Pericarditis)) or non cardiac reason. Find the cause of shortness of breath, dizziness & fainting. Find the cause of palpitations. Find the toxicity of certain medicines like Digoxin / chemotherapy. Diagnose the electrolyte imbalance. Check the health of the heart when other diseases or conditions are present, such as high blood pressure / high cholesterol / smoking / diabetes. Screening of the heart in v/o family history of certain heart disease. Screening of the heart prior to surgery / as a part of complete body check up. Diagnose suspected congenital Heart Disease.

X-rays are a type of radiation called electromagnetic waves. The X Ray machine produces a tiny burst of radiation, at a safe level, that passes through your body and records an image on a computer digitally / specialized plate. X-ray imaging creates pictures of the inside of your body. An X-ray is a quick, painless test.

X-ray beams can pass through your body, but they are absorbed in different amounts depending on the density of the material they pass through. Dense materials, such as bone and metal, show up as white on X-rays. The air in your lungs shows up as black. Fat and muscle appear as varying shades of gray. Thus the images show the parts of your body in different shades of black and white as different tissues absorb different amounts of radiation.

Digital radiography is a form of X Ray imaging where digital X Ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film (which requires specialised processing). Digital X-Ray facility provides immediate processing and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. Advantages of this technique is bypassing chemical processing and requires less radiation.

UltraSonography is an ultrasound based diagnostic imaging technique used to evaluate many parts of the body including the abdomen, blood vessels, fetus of pregnant women, joints, thyroid gland, superficial body structures including subcutaneous area (area below skin), tendons & muscles.

It utilizes high frequency sound waves (Ultrasound) to obtain diagnostic images. Diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography or diagnostic medical sonography. The images produced during an ultrasound examination often provide valuable information for diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases and conditions.

Pre preparations

How you prepare for an ultrasound depends on which area of your body needs evaluation:

Most ultrasound exams require no preparation. Examination such as a pelvic ultrasound — require that you should not urinate before the exam to ensure that your urinary bladder will be full, allowing better visualization of the uterus, ovaries or prostate. How the test is performed?

chocardiography

Echocardiogram is simply a sonogram of the heart. Echocardiography can provide excellent images of the heart, paracardiac structures, and the great vessels. Usually it is 2 DimentionalTransThoracic Echocardiography with Color Doppler Study. It is widely used noninvasive cardiology test. It is routinely used in diagnosis, management and follow up of the patient with cardiac diseases.

Why the Test is Performed? To evaluate size and shape of the heart walls & chambers. To evaluate pumping capacity of the heart. To evaluate extent of any tissue damage of heart muscle in case of heart attack / ischemia. To evaluate cardiac valve areas and function. To evaluate any blood clots /tumours within the heart. To evaluate active infection on the valves in the cases like Rheumatic heart disease / suspected Endocarditis. To evaluate for abnormal pressure within the lungs and to evaluate the function of the right side of the heart in cases of long standing diseases of the lungs / vessel. To evaluate any congenital abnormalities of the heart and great vessels (coming out through heart). To evaluate any abnormalities of cardiac sac (pericardium) and paracardiac structure. To evaluate the effect of treatment in Pt having heart attack, reduced pumping capacity, infection of the cardiac valves, following heart valve surgery/ coronary angioplasty / coronary Bypass surgery etc. To evaluate function of the heart in patients having long standing Hypertension, Diabetes o

According to the National Cancer Institute, the different types of mammograms are:

Screening mammogram A screening mammogram is an X-ray of the breast used to detect breast changes in women who have no signs of breast cancer. It usually involves two X-rays of each breast. Using a mammogram, it is possible to detect a tumor that cannot be felt. Diagnostic mammogram A diagnostic mammogram is an X-ray of the breast used to diagnose unusual breast changes, such as a lump, pain, nipple thickening or discharge, or a change in breast size or shape. More pictures are taken than during a screening mammogram.

A diagnostic mammogram is also used to evaluate abnormalities detected on a screening mammogram.

Ophthalmoscopy or Fundoscopy Tests

Fundoscopy is an examination of the back part of the eye (fundus), which includes the retina, optic disc, choroid, and blood vessels. When you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, your doctor may wish to examine your eyes or refer you to a specialist clinic. A simple test can look at the small blood vessels in the back of your eye, to check if any damage has been done by high blood pressure.

Looking at the back of the eye reveals whether or not your small blood vessels (caplliaries) have thickened, narrowed or burst. This is the only place where the small blood vessels can be viewed and often any problems here are repeated in the small blood vessels in places that cannot be seen, such as in the kidneys. In fact, many people discover they have high blood pressure because their optician notices the signs during a routine eye test.

Ultrafast CT, Electron-Beam Computed Tomography, EBCT, Cine CT Scan)

A computed tomography CT scan uses X-rays to study all parts of your body, such as the Brain, chest, abdomen, pelvis, or an arm or leg. It also can study blood vessels, bones, and the spinal cord. The CT scanner sends X-rays through the body area being studied. Each rotation of the scanner provides a picture of a thin slice of the organ or area. All of the pictures are saved as a group on a computer.

In some cases, a dye called contrast material may be used. It may be put in a vein (IV) in your arm, or it may be placed into other parts of your body (such as the rectum or a joint) to see those areas better. For some types of CT scans you drink the dye. The dye makes structures and organs easier to see on the CT pictures.

Fluoroscopy CT is a special test that is not widely available. It uses a steady beam of X-rays to look at movement within the body. It allows the doctor to see your organs move or to guide during a tissue biopsy or to guide the proper placement of a needle to drain an abscess or for placement of other instrument into the right place inside your body.
