FUSO Fire rated glasses are not meant for interiors alone. They can be used on exteriors and combine gracefully with the architect's design. Toughened Glass or Tempered Glass has increased strength and is widely used for its safety as it usually shatters into small fragments in the event of an impact. It is usually installed in areas where safety glass is required to lessen the possibility of mechanical or thermal breakage and/ or to assure greater uniform load strength.

The Tempering Process

Glass is tempered by taking annealed glass and heating it to softening point of approximately 660 degree C. Its structure is then rapidly cooled while the inner core is allowed to cool gradually. This results in layer of high compression on the surface counter balancing by high tension at the center resulting in a glass that is four to five times stronger than annealed glass. Should accidental breakage occur, the resulting fragments are smaller and granular, causing no injury, harmless.

 

Properties

Toughened glass is 4 to 5 times stronger than annealed glass, has enhanced thermal resistance, and breaks into small cuboid fragments rather than irregular shards of glass.

Toughened glass is made from annealed glass via a thermal tempering process. The glass is placed onto a roller table, taking it through a furnace that heats it to above its annealing point of 600 °C.

It is then rapidly cooled with forced draughts of air while the inner portion of the glass remains free to flow for a short time.


Benefits

Impact Resistance - A surface compression of over 10,000 PSI(69MPa) imparts about five times the impact and mechanical strength of annealed glass of the same thickness.

Thermal Cracking Resistance - Tempered Safety Glass will resist temperatures of up to approximately 295 C an temperature difference of up to approximately 250 C. In a range frm -20 C to 300 C.

Safety - When broken, Tempered Glass / Toughened Glass become small granules, which will not exert substantial hurt to human body.

Optical Clarity - Tempered safety glass may contain some minor visual imperfection of distortion through the heating


Uses of Tempered / Toughened Glass Toughened glass is used when strength, thermal resistance and safety are important considerations, such as in microwavable see-through cookware. Heat Soaking is a heating process carried out subsequent to toughening, when specified, to detect and reject any toughened glass that may have inclusions (Nickel Sulphate) or edge defects that may cause spontaneous breakages after installation.

Heat Soaked Glass FUSO Heat Soaked Glass can be used in critical application areas to eliminate the risk of spontaneous breakage. Nickel Sulphate (NiS) has been known to be the cause of spontaneous burst in Tempered Glass / Toughened Glass. During tempering the invisible nickel sulphide present in the glass is transformed to the high tempered a- phase (t>380C) has no time to retun to the ß- phase on quenching. With the passage of time NiS slowly inverts to the low temperature ß- phase with the increase in volume of about 4%. This volume expansion may cause glass breakage. The heat soak is a destructive treatment which heat the glass for several hours at about 290 degree C to speed up the a -NiS to ß - NiS transformation and consequently forces the contaminated glassess broken within the oven. Precautions Heat Soaked Testing is not an absolute guarantee that the glass will not break spontaneously due to NiS but it substaintially lowers the risk. Studies have been concluded worldwide indicating the reliability of heat soak test to as high as 98.5%.

Bullet Resistant Glass All these glasses are multi-laminated, ranging in thickness from 13mm to 60mm. The lamination is constructed in such a way that each layer of glass and each interlayer plays a specific role in assisting to the impact of the projectile. The initial layers are broken by the bullets and become finely granulated at the point of impact thereby absorbing initial shock and energy.
