Why choose Australia for university and vocational studies

Australia can be a very desirable place for overseas students to take up tertiary studies. The best Australian universities rank close to the top of the Times Education Supplement rankings of world universities (see TimesHigherEducation for 2009).

The Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland, the University of New South Wales and Monash University in Melbourne were in the top 50 universities of the world in the 2009 rankings, well above than such famous US, UK, Canadian and European universities as Boston University, the Universities of Alberta, Wisconsin, Texas (Austin), the London School of Economics, Dartmouth, Purdue, St Andrews (where the British Royal Family sent Prince William), Emory, Leeds and Rice.

As everywhere, regional universities in Australia vary in quality but the better ones are excellent and their degrees command the greatest respect. Western Australia is in the top 100. Adelaide and Macquarie are within the top 200; Adelaide outranks Georgetown, McMaster, Queen’s, Durham, Texas A&M and Aberdeen. (See  TimesHigherEducation for 2008). We can of course informally advise as to desirability of degrees from assorted Australian universities.

Norway, indeed, finds it expedient and cost effective to provide funding for its tertiary students to take up study in Australia at regional universities rather than creating additional spaces at its own universities.

Australian tertiary qualifications, whether professional or trade, can provide a grounding for successful applications for permanent resident status. If it is your intention to study in Australia with this in mind, you should consult closely with us. Not all such qualifications do provide such a grounding, and the requirements change extremely frequently.

But if emigration to Australia is on your mind, it is a great advantage to obtain an Australian qualification, and the economic opportunities in Australia are limitless, especially for those with typical Indian initiative, energy and talent.

On the other hand, UK qualifications (for example) don’t qualify foreign students for immigration there.

At the same time, Australian tertiary qualifications from the right institutions are held in the highest regard internationally. Many Indians have studied in Australia solely for the purpose of obtaining great advantage in their career advancement in India.

Employer Nominated Migration Visa – Onshore in Australia or Overseas application

This is a permanent employer sponsored visa, also referred as the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS).

For temporary employer sponsored visas, you have to apply for subclass 457 visa. Employer Nomination Scheme is a permanent visa where the applicants have a job offer waiting for them, This visa can be applied on shore also if the applicant holds a temporary work visa, (some other temporary work visas are also substituted as substantive visas to apply for subclass 457) e.g.; a Working Holiday visa, a skilled graduate (temporary) visa, and a student visa. This visa is for you, if you have an Australian sponsor to sponsor you and has a job offer for you.

The 457 ENS visa is a commonly-used pathway to move onto a permanent visa.

Since 2005, this visa category has been considerably changed to encourage more skilled workers to enter Australia. Australia is eager for skilled workers, particularly who have trade skills and skilled workers from medical field like nurses and doctors

The Australian employer must pay a nomination fee to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Business Centre.

As an employee, you must also pay a visa application fee. The visa application charge is more for onshore applications. You can include your family members such as your spouse and children on the same application. It will be a combined application but only one visa fee.  Other costs include skills assessment fee (if required) medical check-ups, police clearance, documents translations if necessary, and photographs. These payments are not refundable if the application is unsuccessful.

Employer Criteria and Eligibity

Employer (Nomination): The employer provides the following information for the nomination

  • The position to be filled must be on the ENS occupations list.
  • The position must meet the minimum gazette salary level:
    • $47,480 for non-ICT workers

Australian permanent residents are residents of Australia who hold a permanent residency visa but are not citizens of Australia. A holder of a permanent residency visa may remain in Australia indefinitely. A 5-year initial visa, which corresponds to the underlying migration program, is granted alongside the permanent residency. Until the initial visa expires, the visa holder may leave and re-enter Australia freely. A notable feature of the permanent residency visa is that, even after the initial visa expires, the holder is entitled to stay in Australia indefinitely without breaching immigration regulations.

After the initial visa expires, if the holder wishes to continue to travel to and from Australia as a permanent resident, they must obtain a Resident Return Visa (RRV).However those who live for too long outside Australia may lose their permanent resident status.

Permanent residency may be revoked at the discretion of the responsible Minister, for example in cases of criminal misconduct.

Permanent residents enjoy many of the rights and privileges of citizens, including access to free or subsidised legal and health services. They do not have the right to vote in federal or state/territory elections but may vote in some local government elections. Permanent residents are not entitled to an Australian passport.

Most permanent residents are eligible to become citizens after a waiting period. When the waiting period is complete, the process of sitting the citizenship test and attending the ceremony will add an additional three to twelve months.

The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (subclass 870) visa is an additional visa option which allows Parents to remain in Australia for up to five years without the need to depart. The visa also allows multiple entries if a visa holder wishes to depart and re-enter Australia during the visa validity. This visa offers an option of temporary family reunification without the waiting periods experienced in other existing parent visa arrangements. The requirements for a sponsor to meet a minimum income threshold ensures that adult children who sponsor their parents are able to afford the costs of the parent visa holder living in Australia without creating a burden on Australian taxpayers and disadvantaging other members of the community.
If a sponsorship application is refused for failing to meet the income test, this requirement may be seen as discriminatory based on a person’s financial status. However, this measure is aimed at protecting the welfare of elderly parents who may be vulnerable if their sponsor does not have sufficient income to support their stay in Australia, particularly on a long-term basis. This measure also reduces the risks of visa holders imposing a burden on Australian taxpayers or public health system. The income test is based on an objective community standard of the full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings.
More information on whether you and your sponsor can satisfy this visa requirement and the exemptions and alternatives to satisfy this visa can be discussed with the migration agent.
