A key factor in India’s rise to the status of a super power will be its ability to meet its increasing energy demand. Inadequate power generation has impeded growth of Indian industry for long. This enormous demand for power in the country requires power infrastructure and manufacturing capacity to be put in place. This demand augurs well for the Power Equipment manufacturers in the country, of which BHEL is one of the largest players.
The power generation equipment sector can be mainly split into two main components namely, Boiler, Turbine, Generator (BTG) and Balance of Plant (BoP). The BTG which mainly consists of boiler as one unit and the turbine and generator as the other unit, forms 65% of the total cost while the BoP consists mainly of the coal handling plant, the ash handling plant, the condenser, the cooling tower, the boiler feed pump etc. forms 35% of the total cost
BHEL is the largest manufacturer of boilers in the country, with almost 60% share of the market. It has the capacity to manufacture boilers for Super Critical Thermal Power Plants apart from utility boilers and industrial boilers.
In case of boilers, the production in the country has been growing at a compounded rate of 39%, whereas consumption is at 26%. Power needs in the country further will consolidate the growth prospects for the sector in the years to come.

Until June 2012, India’s power output totaled 205 GW, for which coal was attributed as the energy carrier for about 56%. Renewable hydropower and energy sources accounted for another 31%. In order to bridge the growing demand for power, the MNRE is encouraging the power industry to look at alternate fuels. Wind energy is one such option available in India as an alternate fuel and efforts to tap wind energy commenced in the year 2000.
The development of the Indian wind power industry has so far been concentrated in Tamilnadu, which accounts for more than half of all installations in India. Other States including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh are now catching up. As a result wind farms can be seen under construction all across the country
On a manufacturing front, India has a solid domestic manufacturing base, including global player Suzlon. International companies like Enercon, Vestas, Repower, Siemens and LM Glasfiber have now set up production bases in India. This has in turn stimulated a stronger domestic manufacturing sector, due to which some of the companies are now sourcing more than 80% of the components for their turbines from India.

The indian construction equipment sector had an estimated market size of approximately us$ 3. 8 billion, as of year 2011. This industry has been growing due to large scale investments made by the government and the private sector in infrastructure development. Though the indian construction equipment sector is a fraction of the global market, which has a size of about us$ 75 billion, it has been registering an impressive average growth of 18% annually since 2006-2010, compared to the global sector growth of 5%. With india as one of the top ten markets for construction equipment, firms are strengthening their existing operations to cater to the growing domestic demand.
in terms of size, the earth moving equipment segment constitutes the largest, accounting for nearly 57% of the sector. The material-handling sector is the next largest accounting for close to 25%. The construction equipment and vehicle sector accounts for the balance. As the engineering units in and around trichy already have the skill set and machinery for manufacturing components and the assembly of such construction machinery, diversifying into this area would ensure greater sustainability of business. Moreover proximity to a port improves the chances of attracting export-oriented units to trichy.
