Herb functions: 

Adaptogenic and antistress:  Ashvagandha is an unique herb with antistress and adaptogenic action that improves physical and mental fitness and helps with daily stress management. It increases physiological endurance and inhibits chronic stress-related physiological abnormalities.

Anti diabetic: Karela helps support normal blood sugar levels with compounds called charantin and momordicin. Additional key compounds such as vicine, peptides and polypeptide-p (plant insulin) work together to lend the vegetable-fruit its antihyperglycemic potency. Karela enhances peripheral glucose utilization and increases serum protein levels. It also increases glucose absorption and fatty acid oxidation and improves insulin sensitivity. Karela significantly reduces hyperglycemia, glycated hemoglobin (Hb A1C) levels, total cholesterol levels and free fatty acid levels (Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, August 2008, 81(2), 134–43).
Insulinomimetic (insulin-like): Insulin is responsible for maintaing normal glucose levels in the blood. Karela, by its insulin-like action and by increasing the secretion of insulin, helps in reducing excessive blood glucose levels. Karela also possesses antioxidant properties which help in reducing the risk of diabetic complications by scavenging free radicals.
Hepatoprotective: The fruit extract was found to significantly increase the active liver enzymes glutathione s-transferase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase, which suggest the role of Karela in preventing hepatotoxicity (International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences Review and Research,Volume 1, Issue 2, March/April 2010).
Hypolipidemic: The compounds in Karela improve lipid profiles. They reduce the secretion of apolipoprotein B by the liver which is the primary lipoprotein present in low density or ‘bad’cholesterol. Karela reduces apolipoprotein C-III, the protein found in low-density cholesterol which turns into LDL cholesterol. Karela increases apolipoprotein A-1, the major protein component of high-density or ‘good’ cholesterol. It also lowers cellular triglyceride content. Karela fruit and seeds have been shown to reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels both when dietary cholesterol is absent and present (International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences Review and Research, Volume 1, Issue 2, March/April 2010).

Antipsoriatic: Karela inhibits the enzyme guanylate cyclase, which may benefit people with psoriasis.

Herb functions: 
Arthritis: The extract of the gum resin in Shallaki is effective in reducing joint swelling, pain, stiffness and other symptoms of inflammatory joint disorders including rheumatoid arthiritis and osteoarthritis. Shallaki decreases knee pain and increases knee flexion. Joint care: Shallaki improves the blood supply to the joints and restores the integrity of blood vessels destroyed by spasms. Degradation of glycosaminoglycans, which leads to articular damage and cartilage breakdown, is a common condition in patients on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Shallaki significantly reduces the degradation of glycosaminoglycans and protects the joints. Respiratory disorders: Studies have demonstrated that Shallaki extract inhibits the pro-inflammatory mediators that cause bronchoconstriction and improves blood supply by increasing vascular permeability. Clinical studies with asthmatics have shown that Shallaki significantly reduces symptoms of asthma and improves objective measures of lung and immune function.

Urinary tract infection: Punarnava works as a diuretic. The diuretic action of the herb is attributed to the presence of the xanthone beta-ecdysone. In addition, Punarnava also has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties, which are beneficial in treating urinary tract disorders such as chronic and recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), including UTIs in pregnancy.
Nephrotic syndrome: The herb has been reported to increase serum protein levels and reduce urinary protein excretion in clinical trials in patients suffering with nephrotic syndrome. The activity is attributed to the presence of rotenoids in various parts of the plant. Punarnava also reduces edema associated with kidney dysfunction.

Other: The flavonoid arbinofuranoside, present in the herb, was found to lower serum uric acid, which is helpful in treating urogenital disorders.

Gastrointestinal: Manjishtha is beneficial in gastrointestinal ailments like loss of appetite, dyspepsia and worm infestations.
