Regions traversed : Kullu, Lahaul, Spiti, Kinnaur & Shimla

Max. altitude attained : 4551 Mts. (14,950 ft. The Kunzum Pass)

Temperature range : -5°C at night to 25°C in the day.

Spiti, the very name conjures up images of a mystic land lost in time and space in the remote Himalayan Ranges. This once forbidden land steeped in Buddhism is one of the last remaining strongholds of the Tantric form of the faith. The breathtaking stark moonscape of the Spiti Valley with its ever-changing hues and its ancient spiritual culture transports one into an era gone-by.

From Shimla one drives up the ancient Hindustan Tibet Road, the second highest highway in the world. It’s a long two-day drive through Kinnaur, the land of the Gods, till Spiti. Day three is spent in exploring the Spiti Valley and its ancient monasteries. On the fourth day starts the trek to Chandratal, the Lake of the Moon. Walking through the Greater Himalayas truly unfolds the stunning magnificence of the surrounding landscape. This emerald lake lies in the midst of a high altitude meadow lined with magnificent peaks of the mighty Kunzum, Mulkila and Chandra Bagha Ranges. The two nights spent in tents on the banks of the lake treats one to an unforgettable night-sky that tempts one to reach out and touch the stars as they seem so near. One reluctantly departs this fairy land on the sixth day to trek back to join the road where motorised transport takes over to return to civilisation and whizzes one to Manali to end an experience to cherish for a lifetime.
PREPARATIONS REQUIRED

In summer, the days can be quite warm, but the temperature plunges suddenly as the sun sets. Accordingly you will require light cotton clothes as well as warm underwear, a thick pullover and a windproof and waterproof suit. A good sleeping bag and two pairs of stout walking shoes are essential. The sun’s rays are rather strong here, hence you must have a sunscreen lotion with a high protective factor, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat and lip cream.

RECOMMENDED:

Personal medication, binoculars, torches with extra batteries, a knife, camera and as many rolls of film as you can carry.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Shimla (2206 Mts.) – Recong Peo (2290 Mts.)…. 271 Kms.

Depart Shimla in the morning and drive along the legendary Hindustan – Tibet Road. It’s a hard days drive till Recong Peo, the H.Q. of Kinnaur District. The awesome Kinner Kailash peak (6050 Mts.) looms over Peo along with a gorgeous spectacle of snow-capped Himalayan ranges. Overnight in tents / guesthouse.

Day 2: Recong Peo – Tabo (3050 Mts.)…187 Kms. / Kaza (3600 Mts.)…233 Kms.

Drive along the torrid Sutlej River. We have now entered the greater Himalayas and the landscape changes dramatically. The thick forests are replaced by vast stretches of barren splendour. Tabo (3050 M) was the venue of the last Kaalchakra ceremony performed by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama in 1996. It is the seat of a thousand year old Buddhist Gompa, regarded next only to the Tholing Gompa in Tibet. Kaza is the sub-divisional headquarters of Spiti. Overnight in tents / guesthouse

Day 3: Tabo / Kaza – Kibber (4205 Mts.) – Losar (4079 Mts.)…94 Kms. In the morning visit the Dhankar Monastery. Dhankar is a big village and the erstwhile capital of the Spiti kingdom. Proceed further through some spectacular scenery to Kibber (4205 Mts.), the highest permanently inhabited village in the world. Enroute visit the famous Ki Monastery, which is perched precariously on a craggy rock face.

At the centre of New Delhi stands the 42 m high India Gate, an “Arc-de-Triomphe” like archway in the middle of a crossroad. Almost similar to its French counterpart, it commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during the World War I. The memorial bears the names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.

The Red sandstone walls of the massive Red Fort (Lal Qila) rise 33-m above the clamour of Old Delhi as a reminder of the magnificent power and pomp of the Mughal emperors. The walls, built in 1638, were designed to keep out invaders, now they mainly keep out the noise and confusion of the city.

Jama Masjid

This great mosque of Old Delhi is the largest in India, with a courtyard capable of holding 25,000 devotees. It was begun in 1644 and ended up being the final architectural extravagance of Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who built the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort.

This remote trail follows the traditional trade route between the people of Spiti, Changthang and Tibet. It begins in the high altitude meadows of Kibber, the breeding ground of the famous Spiti horses and also called the Snow Leopard country, climbs over the Parang la (5600 mt), the source of the Pare Chu river, the only one of its kind to have its source in India, flow into Tibet and enter the country again in Spiti, reaching Tso Moriri (15,000 ft), a high altitude lake 27 kms long and nearly 8 km wide. This lake is also the breeding ground for the bar-headed geese, black-necked crane and the Brahmini ducks. Parang la connects the Spiti valley to parts of Ladakh. On the Spitian side of this pass, flows the river Parilungbi and the track runs on its side, climbing up the pass towards Ladakh. There is a glacier about three kilometers on the northeast of this pass.

Day 01: Delhi – Manali
Fly to Kullu. Drive to hotel. Rest of the day at leisure/sightseeing.

Day 02: Manali – Kaza
Drive for 7-8 hrs over Kunzum La (4590 mtrs) and Rohtang La (over 3970 mtrs) to Kaza. The landscape changes starklingly over a matter of a few hours from lush green forest to meadows to barren moonscape as you move towards cold deserts of Spiti. Overnight stay in Hotel.

Day 03: Kaza

After a leisurely breakfast, visit the Ki monastery and Kibber village. Also visit the Comic village; the highest village connected by road in Asia should the time permit. Overnight stay in Kaza.Kaza is the capital of Spiti Valley. Rudyard Kipling describes Spiti in “Kim” in these words: “At last they entered a world within a world – a valley of leagues where the high hills were fashioned of the mere rubble and refuse from off the knees of the mountains… Surely the Gods live here.

Day 04: Kaza – Dumla – 22kms /4hrs Drive Kaza – Kibber (18 Km)
Drive through Ki (one can visit the monastery here to Kibber village at 4205m, is one of the highest inhabited settlements in India. The famous Ki gompa is just 10 kms away and can be visited before beginning the trek. Kibber to Dumla is an easy walk but take your time, as these Spitian gorges are renowned for being hard-going.

Day 5: Dumla – Thaltak Meadow (4875M) – 7km/5hrs
Descend to the gorge bed and start the climb towards the pass, a steep walk to Thaltak Meadow where you camp for the night. The scenery is wild and the gorge is deep. Even at this height the sunlight reflected from the walls of the gorge causes the temperature to soar.

Day 6: Thaltak – Jagtha – Bonrojen (5180M) – 14km/7hrs
This is a long and strenuous day walking to Jagtha – 8kms at 15,700 ft. and then 6kms to Bongrojen at 17,000ft.

There are some great views of the Spiti and the Changthang valleys from the pass. Parilungi, a conical peak, is the first Ladakhi peak visible from Spiti. From the pass, we descend to the source of the Pare Chu river. After the pass, the landscape changes dramatically from steep gorges to broad plains. Camp at Dak Karzong

Day 8: Dak Karzong – Datang Yongma (4725M) – 12 km/ 5hrs
