Chardham, that literally means 'Four Shrines' is the collective name referring to the four most sacred Hindu shrines in the Garhwal region - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Keedarnath and Badrinath. Rishikesh serves as the base station for pilgrimage trips to these shrines. Heval River Cottage & Rafting operate various Chardham yatra packages. You shall opt for all the four shrines or combination of any one or more.
Yamunotri: According to a popular legend ancient sage Asit Muni had his hermitage at Yamunotri. His entire lifetime, he bathed daily both in Ganga and Yamuna. During his old age, as he was immobile, a stream of Ganga appeared opposite Yamunotri for him.
The temple and the place opens every year during the last week of April on the auspicious day of the akshya-tritya. The shrine closes on the sacred day of Diwali in Oct-Nov. After a brief ceremony, the temple is shut down and for the rest of the time the valley is gripped in no man silence and covered with heavy sheet of snow. With melting of snow next summer, temple re-opens.
Gangotri: It is where the sacred River Ganges originates. The legend surrounding Gangotri goes like.. The great task of bringing Ganga down to the earth started. Despite the failure of his father and grandfather, King Bhagirath was very determined and meditated at Gangotri. After several years of intense meditation, the Ganga descended from Heaven but remained suspended in Shiva's hair. Now it was the task of king Bhagirath to meditate and propitiate Shiva. Shiva being pleased released the Ganga as three streams - one of which came of earth in the form of the Bhagirathi.
Kedarnath: Kedarnath shrine is held in extreme reverence as one of the twelve jyotirlingas of Hindu God Shiva. IT is situated at an altitude of 3583 metres above sea level. By its geographical structure, Kedarnath is the most inaccessible among the four chardham shrines. In outer area of the temple, the statues of Goddess Parvati, Pandava, Goddess Lakshmi etc are situated. The lake of cold water is located very near to temple which is the origin of river Mandakini.
Badrinath: The Badrinath shrine is dedicated to the Lord Vishnu, considered to be the preserver of the universe in the Hindu mythology. The idol of Lord Vishnu is made of black stone. The temple is divided into three parts. The garbh griha in which the idol of Lord Badrinath is seated in the inner part of this place and canopy covered with gold sheet. Second part is known as Darshan Mandap in which puja ceremonies are performed. Third part is the Sabha Mandap, which is an outer hall, where devotees wait for darshan of Lord Badrinath.

Spirituality and Tourism are the lifelines of Uttarakhand and the prominent player in the boom is the tiny city Rishikesh. With an abundance of Temples and Ashrams scattered around it manifests an aura of reverence. For the pilgrims, it would be a spiritual expedition; for the casual visitors, tourists and backpackers the city and surroundings provide an eyeful of spectacles.

Ram Jhula & Lakshman Jhula: Jhula literally means 'Swing'. Lakshman Jhula is a 19th century hanging bridge across the Sacred river Ganges. It was built in 1936 along the old route to Badrinath temple. It is believed that during the Ramayana Era, Lakshman, the younger brother of Sri Ram had crossed the river using a jute bridge at this location. Ram Jhula, a similar bridge a couple of kilometers downstream is a recent addition. Both the bridges have become the main tourist attractions of Rishikesh, due to the religious connotations attached to them as well as the sheer marvel of technology that keep them suspended from a pair of pillars on either bank.

Parmarth Aarti: Parmarth Aarti is a spectacular event visitors to Rishikesh could not afford to miss. Though it is a routine prayer session held to invoke the blessings of Goddess Ganges, by its rythmic chanting, colorful attire of the participants, the fragrance of burning incenses and clinging of bells has evolved through time as an event that keep masses of people in blissful awe. It is a daily event held at the premises of Parmarth Niketan Ashram and along the bank of Ganges, a few metres away from Ram Jhula.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple: Perched at an altitude of 926 meters amidst three mountain ranges, Vishnukoot, Brahmakoot and Manikoot, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is visited by thousands of pilgrims. The presiding deity is Shiva. According to the myths, during the samudra manthan Shiva had consumed the Kalkut Vish, and retained the poison in his throat which gave it a permanant bluish hue. Hence he acquired the name Neelkanth meaning blue-throated. Neelkanth temple is 14 kms from Rishikesh. The route to this temple is surrounded by lush green hills and rivers, providing some of the most beautiful sights. Many pilgrims come to Neelkanth by trekking. The temple complex has also got one natural spring where devotees usually take a holy dip. The main shrine of the temple comprises a Shiva lingam. People make an offering of coconut, flowers, milk, honey, fruits and water to the Lord.
