Wood Science is a field of diverse basic subjects like forestry physics, chemistry, biology, engineering etc. What was formerly known as the field of "Forest Products" has now come to be known as "Wood Science" in many parts of the world The forests of India presently cover about 74, x 106 ha with a possibility of increasing to reach national goals of forest cover These forests produce mostly tropical hardwoods of a variety of species and to some extent coniferous woods of the temperate region, all amounting to roughly 9.121 x10 m3 of commercial and industrial wood annually. Besides wood there are other lingo-cellulosic forest products which have a great economic potential In India there is a large net-work of research institutes which are fully or partly engaged in work dealing with utilisation of timber and other forest produce and employing scientific personnel of all categories. Similarly there is a very large net-work of diversified timber, bamboo, and panel based industries in the country including internal and external sales organisations. These employ a very large number of appropriate scientific and technical personnel. The total number of such technical personnel with appropriate educational qualifications comes to about 2.6 lakhs.
