The Beatles visited Rishikesh, India, in 1968, to attend an advanced Transcendental Meditation training session at the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. They had first met the Maharishi in London, on 24 August 1967, and then attended a seminar at the campus of a teaching college in Bangor. Although planned to be a 10-day series of seminars, their stay was cut short by the death of their manager, Brian Epstein, on 27 August. The Beatles made plans to attend a TM initiator training programme at the Maharishi's new ashram in October, but the trip had to be cancelled due to the filming of the Magical Mystery Tour film.

The picturesque pilgrimage in the hinter lands of the Himalaya is the most sacred spot where Ganga the stream of life touched earth for the first time. According to mythology, goddess Ganga- the daughter of heaven manifested herself in the form of a river to absolve the sins of king Bhagirath's predecessors, following his severe penance of several centuries lord Shiva received into his matted locks to minimize the immense impact of her fall she came to be called Bhagirathi at her legendary source. Along the right bank of Bhagirathi stands the shrine of gangotri dedicated to the goddess. Perched at a height of 3042 mts. It was constructed in the early 18 th century by a Gorkha Commander, Amar Singh Thapa. Every year lakhs of pilgrims throng the sacred temple between May and October. By November gangotri is covered by snow. It is believed that the goddess retreats to mukhba, her winter abode (12 kms. Down stream).

Yamunotri temple is situated in the western region of Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,235 metres (10,614 ft) in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand.[3] The temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The Yamunotri temple is a full day's journey from Uttarakhand's main towns - Rishikesh, Haridwar or Dehradun. The actual temple is only accessible by a 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) trek from the town of Hanuman Chatti and a 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) walk from Janki Chatti; horses or palanquins are available for rent. The hike from Hanuman Chatti to Yamunotri is very picturesque with beautiful views of a number of waterfalls. There are two trekking routes from Hanuman Chatti to Yamunotri, the one along the right bank proceeds via the Markandeya Tirth, where the sage Markandeya wrote the Markandeya Purana, the other route which lies on the left bank of the river goes via Kharsali, from where Yamunotri is a five or six hours climb away.[4] The original temple was built by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the 19th century. The current temple is of recent origin as earlier constructions have been destroyed by weather and the elements. There seems to be a confusion as to who built the temple of Yamunotri. However according to sources, the temple was originally constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal.
