The blood vessels that supply blood to the heart are known as coronary arteries. Any blockage in coronary artery may lead to disrupted blood supply to the heart. Sometimes, the blockage is so severe that blood supply to the heart is completely stopped leading to heart attack or heart failure and may result in death.

If this blockage cannot be treated with medications or lesser invasive procedures such as angioplasty, a procedure known as coronary artery bypass graft or CABG which is an open heart surgery is done to treat the condition.

Coronary artery bypass graft or CABG is also known as open heart bypass surgery , during which blood vessels are taken from another part of the body, typically from the leg and grafted onto the existing heart vessel before and after the blockage allowing the blood to bypass the blocked area and providing un interrupted blood flow to the heart.

Minimally Invasive Heart Bypass Surgery

Minimially invasive heart bypass surgery in India or the MIDCAB is a minimally invasive approach to conventional Bypass Surgery, used for the correction of coronary heart disease. It is also referred to as "keyhole" heart surgery . The procedure is done on the beating heart, and thus a heart-lung machine is not required, as the heart is not made to stop pumping.

The surgery is performed by making a small, two to three inch incision on the left side of the chest. The surgeon then removes the internal mammary artery from the chest either directly or using da Vinci robotic system.

This harvested internal mammary artery is then stitched to the coronary arteries. Nowadays, most heart doctors are preferring this option as this is a much faster and a more advanced procedure. In this procedure, lesser chances of complications arise, as the heart is not stopped. The incisions made are much smaller in length and therefore the surgery is less elaborate, recovery time is lesser and that the patient can be back to normal activities much faster than a full-fledged grafting surgery.

Most commonly known as the Bypass Surgery , it uses a working blood vessel from another part of the body to channel blood around the blocked area. This surgery helps in relieving angina in patients who have not benefitted from medication and are not eligible to undergo angioplasty.

CABG improves long-term health of the heart in patients who are suffering from stenosis of the left main coronary artery. It is also very helpful for patients who have severe stenosis in multiple arteries and those who are suffering from debilitation of heart-muscle pump function.

A graft, which is a common blood vessel, created to clear a blocked artery, is attached above and below the area within the blocked artery so that the blood flow can be diverted to the new, unblocked path, and hence blood flows freely to the heart. The graft is usually taken from an internal mammary artery of the chest, or the veins of the leg. The traditional operation requires a six to eight inch incision down the center of the breastbone so the surgeon can reach the heart directly. During the surgery, the body is connected to a heart-lung bypass machine that keeps the blood flowing so that circulation of blood to other parts of the body is not hampered. The heart is stopped while the doctor conducts the operation and special wires are used to close the chest.

Heart Valve Replacement Surgery

Heart valve replacement surgery in India is a procedure by which surgeons remove a damaged heart valve and substitute it with grafts or parts from body tissues or with synthetic heart valves to restore the normal functioning of the heart.

Valve replacement surgery is done under general anaesthesia and takes about four to five hours. The surgery is done either as an open-heart surgery where in the patient is put on a heart lung machine or rarely as beating heart surgery without the use of heart lung machine, while the patient's heart is normally beating.

After the incision and separation of the breastbone and ribs, the surgeon opens the heart and traces the faulty valve. The edges around the valve are slightly sliced to help loosen it from the tendons that connect it to the rest of the heart and then the valve can be removed.

The new valve is then inserted and attached into place. After the surgery is done, the patient is taken off the bypass machine and the chest is closed.
