LASIK stands for laser in situ keratomileusis, which means using a laser underneath a corneal flap (in situ) to reshape the cornea (keratomileusis). This procedure utilizes a highly specialized laser (excimer laser) designed to treat refractive errors, improve vision, and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. This laser procedure alters the shape of the cornea, which is the transparent front covering of the eye.

The Paediatric Ophthalmology Department at Indore India Eye Care deals with eye problems in children. Adult patients suffering from squint and double vision are also examined and treated effectively.

Children may not complain if they do not see out of one or both eyes. Sometimes the only clue may be poor performance in School, as well viewing the blackboard at a very close distance. Hence all children need an eye exam at the time of starting Schooling.Of the eye problems in children, the most important are refractive errors, squint and amblyopia. Refractive error or the need for glasses is the single most important cause of vision impairment in children. This may lead to permanent deficiency in vision if not detected and treated early. Squint, also known as cross eyes, is the condition where the eyes do not work together. Treatment includes glasses, eye exercises or eye muscle surgery. Lazy eye or amblyopia is the term for poor vision in one or both eyes. It can result from refractive error, squint or several other causes. This needs to be identified and treated at an early age to recover vision.

Infants born prematurely are at risk for developing Retinopathy of pre-maturity (ROP) which may lead to permanent blindness. Sankara Nethralaya has been in the forefront in India in the treatment of this disorder. Cataract (opacification of the lens) can occur in children. This may be present since birth or result from injury. The treatment involves surgical procedures but very often treatment of lazy eye.

There are several causes of double vision and squint in adults as well. These are managed by exercise, special glasses, and eye muscle surgery when required.

Childhood blindness and visual loss is important because of the impact on the child's development, education, future work opportunities & quality of life.

Pediatric Cataract

Pediatric cataracts can occur in one eye (unilateral) or both eyes (bilateral). They can be complete or partial and can be present at birth or occur sometime after birth. In contrast to adults, cataracts in children present a special challenge, since early visual rehabilitation is critical to prevent irreversible amblyopia.

However, even with the best of care, there is still a chance that the affected eye(s) may not be visually rehabilitated. Children born with cataracts are also at risk for developing glaucoma, strabismus, nystagmus, and poor stereopsis, further complicating successful outcomes. In most cases, it is the willpower and resolve of the parents or caregivers to follow post-operative management that determines visual success for the child.

Lens Option in Cataract

As the natural lens plays a vital role in focusing light for clear vision, artificial lens implantation at the time of cataract surgery is necessary as a replacement for the natural lens to yield the best visual results. Because the implant is placed in or near the original position of the removed natural lens, vision is restored, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and image size are not affected. Artificial lenses usually remain permanently in place, require no maintenance or handling, and are neither felt by the patient nor noticed by others.
