Indian Yellow Maize (Corn), is of American origin, and after wheat and rice, it is the most important cereal grain in the world. It provides nutrition to both humans (33.3%) and animals (66.6 %). Serves as basic raw material for the production of starch, oil and protein, alcoholic beverages, food sweeteners and more recently fuel. Special crops grown primarily for food include sweet corn and popcorn, although dent, starchy or floury and flint maize are also widely used as food. Flint maize is also used as feed. Immature ordinary corn on the cob either boiled or roasted is widely consumed.

World Yellow Maize (corn) production in the year 2003 was 614.3 million tons while in year 2004 total world corn production is expected to be 642.6 million tons. Major producing countries are United States, China, EU-25, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and India. These countries accounts for around 80 % of total world corn production. Major consuming nations of corn are China and USA.

There has been continuous increase in the consumption demand of corn mainly owing to increase in the demand from meat and starch sector. There is growing requirement of maize from poultry sector, which uses corn as feed. Major importing nations of maize are Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, Egypt, Malaysia, EU and Colombia. Among the major exporters of corn, USA stands first followed by Argentina and Brazil. China, South Africa, Ukraine are minor exporters, their share is very low. Only USA dominates the page 1 / 6 international trade of corn as an exporter. India's maize production fluctuates between 10-14 million tons, with 80-90% of the production being in the kharif season. Major states that contribute in Maize productions are Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Around 6.5 million tons (roughly 50 % of total consumption) goes for feed use, primarily for poultry feed. Another 1 million tons of corn is used by the starch industry. India is traditionally a maize importer, and Govt. permits a fixed quantity (determined each year) to be imported at 15%. Extra has to be imported at 50%. However, in 2003-04, India exported around 300000 - 500000 tons of maize, mainly to Southeast Asian countries.

Chilies are the most common spice cultivated in India. It is estimated that India produced 1060345 tons of dry chili from an area of 8, 84,183 hectares in 2003-04.

Chilies are valued principally for their high pungency and color. Almost all the states of India produce the crop. The Indian Chilli growing states are Andhra Pradesh (46%), Karnataka (15%), Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Indian Chilli can be grown during the entire year at one or the other partof the country. However, the major arrival season extends from February to April.

The main quality of turmeric is called as Rajapuri which is produced in Sangli, Maharashtra. Masala manufacturers mainly use it due to its saffron colour. The second main quality is Salem Gattha which is produce in Salem, Tamilnadu and that is why its name is pronounced as Salem Gattha. Rajapuri Quality is also a known quality and attracts the Masala manufacturer besides the Salem variety. But production of this quality is low at ~2lakh bags. Both Rajapuri and Salem quality fetch higher prices. Third quality is produced in Messur, Karnataka and called as Godal Patte. It is considered slightly inferior in quality to the former 2. The fourth quality – the Finger quality gets its name from its shape - which looks like human finger. Major producing states are Tamil Nadu, AP, Maharashtra. Karnataka, Orissa, Meghalaya, Bihar and Assam are the main turmeric producing areas. Moreover, Erode, Selam and Rajapur are the main trading place. Other producing countries are Myanmar and China.

Total production of these states is around 2.50 lakh bags in which Meghalaya production is higher at around 100000 bags while the other states contribute for 50000 bags each. Sowing starts in July while main arrival time is February.

In 2008, total production of turmeric was around 4200000 bags while in 2009, it is expected to touch the level of around 45-5000000 bags. Total consumption is around 4500000 bags which include both export and domestic demand.
