Orientation

O-Fest

Orientation, or O-Fest as we call it at VU, is a great way to start university or TAFE.

On-campus orientation is held twice a year. In February/March (Semester 1) we call it Summer O-Fest, and in July (Semester 2) we call it Winter O-Fest.

You'll get an overview of your course and make new friends at fun social events.

International student orientation

If you’re an international student, you must arrive in time to attend a separate international orientation and enrolment session at VU's campus orientations before starting your course.

 

We'd also love you to attend the main O-Fest events.

Club & Students Groups

Joining a club or student group is a great way to become part of the Victoria University community.

We have a variety of student-run clubs, including:

  • Australian Rules Football
  • soccer
  • cheerleading
  • music
  • writing
  • international cultural groups
  • free enterprise.

There are free music lessons, health information sessions and law competitions. You could dance at a ball or join an excursion or study group.

Many of our sporting clubs offer social sport days, so you can come and try a new sport for fun.

 

And if there's not a club or society to suit you, you can start your own!

Sport & Fitness

Stay active while you study with our campus and social sport activities.

We have sport and fitness centres at five VU campuses, including:

  • an aquatic centre
  • sports courts
  • an athletics track
  • gyms with personal trainers and group fitness classes.

Campus lunchtime sport helps you get active in your lunch break for free with friends and classmates.

Adventure Fridays are fun excursions away from campus. We have excursions where you can go surfing or skiing, swim with dolphins, go horseriding or trampoline and rockclimb. Make new friends while you have a great time!

For fitness with heart, join the VUnite team for various community fitness and fundraising events such as Run for Kids, Oxfam Trailwalker and the Mother's Days Classic.

If you excel at your chosen sport, you can represent VU at one of our sporting competitions. Or, apply for the elite student athlete program to combine your studies with training/competing in your chosen sport.

If you'd rather keep your spot on the sideline, you can volunteer your time to help out with sports administration, managing, coaching or refereeing.

The main purpose of trade show events is to showcase a wide variety of options for attendees and business to engage and interact with each other.
1. Plan far in advance

Many times companies either register far in advance for the trade show, and then forget about it; or they’re last minute and reactive with picking the trade shows they participate in. Either way, to do trade shows right, you need to begin your planning long in advance. Planning for a trade show it isn’t just about booking flights and hotel rooms for your staff. It should be a very strategic process, where every aspect of your trade show—pre-show, during-show and post-show—are all meticulously thought through and tied back to a strategy and aligned with your business goals and objectives.

2. Be a speaker, don’t just exhibit

 

Having a booth is great, but the platform that being a speaker provides is tough to beat. Speaking on a topic of expertise to a targeted audience provides instant credibility. It also provides a great opportunity to cross promote your booth happenings as well as giving your booth staff something to talk to visitors about. The slide deck from your presentation can also be used as content to nurture leads and prospects after the trade show. Most trade shows have a process for finding speakers, so you need to look into it and submit a proposal long in advance.

3. Determine trade show goals beforehand

What are you looking to accomplish at the trade show? What is your purpose for being there? For some companies, it may be simply about generating buzz and awareness for the company itself or perhaps a new product or service launch. For others, there might be specific sales-related objectives such as generating a certain number of leads and opportunities, or capturing as many target-rich contacts as possible for your email database. Or it may be a combination of all of these objectives.

 

The point is, determine in advance, long before the event, what it is you actually are looking to accomplish because EVERYTHING you do related to the trade show should be connected back to accomplishing your event objectives. Be sure to set specific, quantifiable metrics for measuring the success of your trade show.

4. Spread the word in advance of the event

Don’t wait until the trade show to start generating buzz, get buzzing before the event. Ways to do this are by hosting a webinar as a countdown for the show, post on social media, or emailing contacts about what your company will be featuring at the show. For larger trade shows, consider writing a series of blog posts as a guide to the event, covering things such as:

  • Speakers not to miss
  • Sessions to attend
  • Breakout sessions that employees are leading
  • What you’re featuring at the show
  • Other important event info
