Some of ISO’s most well-known standards are management system standards. They provide a model to follow when setting up and operating a management system. Like all ISO standards, they are the result of international, expert consensus. Therefore, by implementing a management system standard, organizations can benefit from global management experience and good practice.

These standards can be applied to any organization, large or small, whatever its product or service and regardless of its sector of activity. An effective management system has many benefits including:
• more efficient resource use
• improved risk management, and
• increased customer satisfaction as services and products
Continual improvement

All ISO's management system standards are based on the principle of continual improvement. An organization or company assesses its current situation, fixes objectives and develops policy, implements actions to meet these objectives and then measures the results. With this information the effectiveness of the policy, and the actions taken to achieve it, can be continually reviewed and improved.

Audits
Audits are a vital part of ISO's management system approach as they enable the company or organization to check how far their achievements meet their objectives. External audits also play a role in showing conformity to the standard.

In order to help the auditing of these standards, particularly for companies implementing more than one management system standard, ISO has released ISO 19011:2011. This standard provides specific guidance on internal and external management system audits.
Requirement of QMS

- General requirement

ISO OHSAS18001:2009

ISO 18001 Certification is a consensus standard developed in 1999 by an independent group of national standards bodies and certification bodies (registrars). OHSAS stands for Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series. OHSAS 18001 is structured the same way as ISO 14001, the environmental management system standard, and has essentially the same elements. It was specifically developed to be compatible with ISO 9001, the quality management system standard, and ISO 14001 to allow companies to develop and register integrated quality, environmental and occupational safety and health management systems.

The elements of ISO 18001 Certification(OHSAS) include

1.  Developing an OHS Policy
2.  Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment
3.  Identifying Legal Requirements
4.  Setting OHS Objectives
5.  Establishing an OHS Management Program
6.  Training Employees
7.  Implementing OHS Control Measures
8.  Emergency Planning
9.  Document and Record Control
10.  Internal Audit Programs
11.  Corrective and Preventative Action
12. Management Involvement and Management Review.
13. Steps to OHSAS 18001 Certification

ISO 18001 Certification – Benefits

Organizations that have implemented a system to improve the management of health and safety practices have reported reduced improved employee safety awareness, fewer accidents and reduced costs. In addition, OHSAS 18001 provides a structure, companies can use to integrate quality, environmental and safety and health program management for increased management efficiencies. Many companies find they need to address health and safety elements as they implement ISO 14001 management systems because of the strong interconnection between environmental and safety and health programs in areas such as emergency planning and risk assessment.
Steps of getting ISO 18001 Certification

The process for establishing an OHSAS 18001 management system is essentially the same as the process used of implementing an ISO 14001 Certification system:

1. Preliminary review of existing programs and systems
2. Identification of hazards and applicable laws and regulations
3. Developing new procedures
4. Training personnel
5. Implementing new programs such as internal audit and management review
6. Seeking certification of the OHSAS program

What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for the environmental management of businesses. It prescribes controls for those activities that have an effect on the environment. These include the use of natural resources, handling and treatment of waste and energy consumption.

The Benefits of implementing ISO 14001

Implementing an Environmental Management System is a systematic way to discover and control the effects your company has on the environment. Cost savings can be made through improved efficiency and productivity. These are achieved by detecting ways to minimise waste and dispose of it more effectively and by learning how to use energy more efficiently. It verifies compliance with current legislation and makes insurance cover more accessible. Why seek ISO 14001 certification?

Once you have an environmental management system in place, you may choose to have it externally audited. Following a successful audit by an accredited certification body, you will be issued with a certificate of registration to ISO 14001. This demonstrates that your organisation is committed to environmental issues and is prepared to work towards improving the environment. It also gives a competitive edge to the company's marketing and enhances its image in the eyes of customers, employees and shareholders.

Assessment to ISO 14001

Having chosen a third party accredited certification body for your assessment, it will review your documentation and carry out an initial audit of your site (often called 'stage 1'). This will look at the company's evaluation of environmental effects and ascertain if targets set for the management programme are measurable and achievable. This is followed at a later date by a full audit (stage 2) to ensure that records and working practices demonstrate that the company is following its procedures.

Why choose IOQC for your assessment?

IOQC has an enviable record for customer satisfaction with its certification services. Our environmental audits focus on environmental issues, rather than written documentation. Customers are given support and guidance between the two stages of the audit. IOQC's annual registration fees are amongst the lowest in the industry. What is the cost of assessment to ISO 14001?

IOQC's has produced a guidance price list for organisations seeking registration to ISO 14001. It is contained within our information pack (pleasefor a copy. However, there are many variables, such as an organisation's type and size, and the possible resultant effect it has on the environment. Consequently, we ask you to complete a short questionnaire to help us learn about your organisation. If you prefer, we will happily take these details over the telephone. From this, we can provide you with a fixed, written quotation of the fees involved. Organisations that are ISO 9001 registered with IOQC's may benefit from reduced annual registration fees for ISO 14001 certification. This is because there are some common elements to the auditing process.

CE Marking

These notes are intended to provide reference material for businesses on how to “CE mark” products.

They may help you ensure your product complies with the relevant legislation, especially if you want to sell your product overseas or use/sell imported products from overseas.

By thinking of the issues discussed in the notes in advance, you could save your company time and money, avoid doing something illegal and add the potential of selling your product in new markets.

Nobody likes regulation. However it is often necessary in order to produce fair markets in which legitimate businesses producing and selling safe products of a high standard are protected from unfair competition.

This information pack has been compiled by your local Trading Standards Department as part of a new scheme to advise your business on legislation issues.

We are there to help you at an early stage and to make your company anticipate and react to potential problems from the word go.

If your business manufacturers or imports products in the categories below, and would benefit from some more advice in the area of CE marking, why not sign up for one of our forthcoming seminars on the subject. Specialist Trading Standards Officers, as well as expert staff from the DTI, will be on hand to offer your company one to one support on how the issue of CE marking affects your company.

This advisory scheme forms part of a wider programme of activities all geared to help companies trade internationally .  the other activities

1. Which businesses are affected by CE Marking?
2. Manufacturers
3. Importers
4. Distributors
5. Retailers

If you manufacture or sell products in the UK or the rest of the EU, you will have to comply with the relevant European Directive in your field to demonstrate that your products or the products you sell are ‘fit for their intended use’.

2. How do you demonstrate this?

The way to show you comply is to ‘CE mark’ your product. This symbol is not a quality standard or an indication that products comply with European or other standards. It is merely a tool to show buyers that your products comply to the specific requirements set out in the directive and that the relevant tests have been carried out. It acts like a passport for your products, allowing them to travel freely within an agreed area (see below). It is illegal to supply a product that does not comply and manufacturers and traders can be prosecuted if products do not carry the mark when required to.

3. What brought about the CE Marking Directives?

Because each country within the European Union has its own laws and regulations, it can be difficult for manufacturers to market their products in each of these countries. The New Approach Directives and the use of the CE Marking try to solve this problem because the symbol means the same thing in all the member states of the European Union.

4. How do you go about CE Marking your products?

The way you have to go about getting the CE Mark varies depending on what your product is. More detailed notes in this pack cover the following products:

1. Electrical Safety (1994)
2. Toys (1995)
3. Simple Pressure Vessels (mid-1993)
4. Electromagnetic Compatibility (1996)
5. Personal Protective Equipment (mid-1995)
