Constructional/ Salient Features


  • Primary winding consists of dual coated super enamel round copper wire in suitable alternative layers of wire and insulating paper / polyester film. In unearthed transformer, primary winding is done in two halves but earthed transformer; it is done in single unit. Primary winding is done in two halves but in earthed transformer, it is done in single unit.

  • Secondary winding of enameled round copper wire is wound separately and placed over the CRGO M-4 grade core limb prior to the primary winding. Secondary terminals are brought out on the secondary terminal plate on one side of the transformer.

  • Primary wound coil is dried in oven and impregnated with epoxy resin in casting plant under strictly controlled conditions. Impregnated coil is then dried and assembled in the required mould maintaining necessary clearances as per the voltage requirement. Casting is done under vacuum in the epoxy resin cast paint specifically dedicated for the purpose. It has mixing and pouring chamber with controlled temperature and vacuum conditions. Procedure of casting is strictly followed as specified for the particular resin mix.

  • Curing is done at 1000 C or at room temperature for the specified time depending upon the type of resin used.

  • Each transformer undergoes all the routine tests before dispatch and is delivered safe at site duly packed. However, following precautions must be observed for its intended performance.

  • Transformer is to be unpacked fully before carrying out site tests. Before energizing, one terminal of all the secondary windings not in use is to be grounded.

  • Primary connection is to be tightened sufficiently to avoid hot connection.

  • As the transformer is fully encapsulated, routine maintenance is limited to clean the outer surface only.

Constructional/ Salient Features

 

  • CRGO M-4 or M-3 grade toroidal cores are wound with secondary enameled copper wire, which is distributed uniformally on the periphery of the core to achieve minimum leakage reactance. Inter-layer insulation is provided to avoid secondary winding short-circuiting in times of fault in the system.

  • Primary winding consists of flexible rope of copper and has the required number of turns in one or more sections. Their ends are crimped and taken out through copper rectangular strips or rods as per customer requirement.

  • Insulation consists of high quality epoxy resin. Initially, the secondary wound cores are mounted & cast in the required mould ensuring minimum clearance as per the voltage requirements. Then the primary winding is cast along with the above in the required mould. Casting is done under vacuum in the epoxy resin cast plant specifically dedicated for the purpose. It has mixing & pouring chambers with controlled temperature and vacuum conditions. Procedure of casting is followed strictly by the resin manufacturer for the particular resin-mix.

  • Curing is done at 1000 C or at room temperature for the specified time depending upon the type of resin used.

  • Hollow porcelain insulator conforming to IS: 5621 is mounted over the live terminal end of primary winding and is bolted to the tank. Maximum creep age factor of insulator shall be 3.5 for light or normal pollution level and 4.0 for heavy or very heavy pollution level whereas the minimum creep age distance in mm / kv of HSV shall be 16 or 20 for light or normal pollution level and 25 or 31 for heavy or very heavy pollution level respectively.

  • Primary winding consists of coated synthetic enamel round copper wire in suitable alternate layers of wire and insulating craft paper. It is wound in pyramid construction to have the voltage stress graded uniformly. In unearthed transformer, primary winding is done in two halves and in earthed transformer, it is done in single unit. The live end of the primary winding is connected to top chamber fitted to the top of insulator.

  • The secondary winding is placed over the core limb prior to the primary winding and the core coil assembly is housed in the tank forming the lower part of the transformer. Secondary terminals are brought out in the secondary terminal box on the side of the tank.

  • Insulation of VT is dried out by heating in vacuum. Dried and degassed oil conforming to IS:335 is then filled in the transformer under vacuum.

  • Di-electric strength of the oil-impregnated paper insulation is preserved by hermetic sealing of the transformer. Oil expansion is taken care by filling dry air above oil in the top chamber at atmospheric pressure. All the casketed joints are located below oil level to ensure positive sealing.

  • Each transformer undergoes all the routine tests before dispatch and is delivered safe at site in duly packed condition. However, few precautions must be observed for its intended performance, which are as follows :

  • Transformer is to be unpacked fully and made to stand vertical before carrying out site tests.

  • Transformers are to be stored vertically. Before energizing, one terminal of all the secondary windings not being used is required to be grounded.

  • As the transformer is hermetically sealed, normal maintenance comprises of only visual inspection to check oil level and possible leaks besides cleaning insulator surface periodically depending on the pollution existent at site.
