When the work of Swami Kuvalayanandaji to investigate the effects of Yoga in a scientific way became well known, more and more number of people started coming to the institute at Lonavla with a desire to learn Yoga for the purpose of health and healing. Many amongst them were from Mumbai. As their number grew, they requested Swamiji to open the branch of the institute in Mumbai itself. In response to these requests the Mumbai branch of the Kaivalyadhama was started on the 6th January, 1932. In the initial period the work was carried out at two centres in the suburbs of Mumbai. The Health aspect was handled by the centre at Santacruz and this Health Centre was known as Arogya Sharanam. The other centre at Borivali functioned as the spiritual centre and was known as Adhyatma Kendra. Later on, for a greater convenience of the people, the Health Centre was shifted from the suburb to its present site on Marine Drive. The munificent donation received from Sir Chunilal Mehta, made it possible for the Health Centre to have its own building. In the memory of Sir Mehta’s son, it was renamed as Ishwardas Chunilal Yogic Health Centre, Kaivalyadhama and was inaugurated as a full-fledge centre on 30th April, 1936.
Swami Kuvalayananda had a clear vision about how Yoga can play a great role in health and healing. In an information booklet brought out at the beginning of the Bombay branch, he had mentioned that “he is far more anxious to prevent diseases than to cure them. He is convinced on ground thoroughly scientific, that Yogic physical culture is capable of building such vitality in every individual that seriously takes to it, as would expose him to ills rarely, if at all. To practice Yoga daily and systematically is to develop immunity against all diseases”. All along the last 70 years, this has remained the main thrust of the activity of Kaivalyadhama, Mumbai.

Third component: Involves positive changes in one’s attitude, behaviour and life-style, inducing the feelings of sharing, warmth, friendship, concern, love and respect for the whole world. This acts as an antidote for the feeling of hopelessness, and loneliness, which may come in the absence of a proper relationship with the world around.

When the people talk about yoga they often focus their attention only on the first component, involving various asanas, pranayama and meditational techniques. Thus they confine Yoga to a small period of their daily life as if rest of the day has nothing to do with Yoga.

But from a healing point of view, the Yogic way of life is equally about what goes on in the rest of one’s day. The skills one acquires from their Yogic practices should be used throughout the day. In this sense the UPAYOGA ( i.e. the use of the Yogic skills through the day) needs to be given proper attention. The last two components attend to this Upayoga aspect of Yoga.

If you undertake Yoga in this spirit and comply with all the instructions given to you, you would find that Yoga not only gives you relief from your problems but opens up a new way to enjoy your life.

Thousands of people have benefited from this way of practice, and our intense guidance and teaching at our Yoga Center in Mumbai.

Pranayama

The Prana may be defined as the finest vital force in everything which becomes visible on the physical plane as motion and action and on the mental plane as thought.

The word Pranayama, therefore, means the restraint of vital energies.
It is the control of vital energy which tingles through the nerves of persons.
It moves his muscles and causes him to sense the external world and think his internal thought.

This energy is of such a nature that it may be called the vis viva of the animal organism.

The control of this force is what is aimed at by the Yogins by means of Pranayama.
He who conquers this, is not only the conqueror of his own existence on the physical and mental plane, but the conqueror of the whole world. For, the Prana is the very essence of cosmic life, that subtle principle which evolved the whole universe into its present form and which is pushing it towards its ultimate goal.

To the Yogi the whole universe is his body. The matter which composes his body is the same that evolved the universe. The force which pulsates through his nerves is not different from the force which vibrates through the universe.

The conquest over the body does, therefore, mean to him the conquest over the forces of nature
