Cambridge primary gives schools a world class curriculum to develop skills and understanding in English, Mathematics and Science. It is offered by over 550 primary schools in almost 80 countries worldwide.

Lower Primary – year groups 1-2 (5-7 years old)

Upper Primary – year groups 3-6 (7-11 years old)

At Kings College India, we aim to provide a curriculum with learning opportunities that recognise and celebrate each child’s individual uniqueness, develop their full potential and prepare them to meet new challenges.

The Primary Programme develops English, Mathematics and Science skills in young children. It provides a natural progression through the stages of primary education and focuses on what children should be able to do at each of the primary stages.

It is designed to help parents gain a greater understanding of their children’s abilities, and their strengths and weaknesses. This is very important, as it helps teachers to know which areas to focus on for each child.

From the beginning of the Upper Primary: it provides teachers with a summative assessment at the end of each academic year in English, Mathematics and Science. These tests are called Cambridge Primary Programme Progression Tests, which are marked by the teacher. These tests enable teachers to track the progression students are achieving as they progress through the Upper Primary years and supplies teachers with an International benchmark.

The Middle School or Intermediate years, Classes 6 to 8 are critical for the student as they adapt to the change from Primary to Secondary styles of instruction which support their independent learning and focus more on inquiry and assessing information for its relevance. Our subject teachers are experts in facilitating this transition and the differing teaching methods that are required. Students in these years will have core subjects of English, Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities, Arts and Sports, these being the foundation for the later IGCSE options in Upper School. Cambridge Checkpoint Tests are integrated into the curriculum.

Cambridge Checkpoint tests : A standardized, external international benchmark for performance

Cambridge Progression Tests and Cambridge Checkpoint Exams are aimed at providing educators with valuable information about students’ strengths and weaknesses as they advance to the next stage of education. These tests are used at the end of the Primary programme (end of Grade 5) and the Cambridge Secondary 1 (end of Grade 8). The tests are available for English, Mathematics and Science.

These tests are marked by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Each student receives a statement of achievement and a diagnostic feedback report, providing the school with detailed information and parents extra trust in the feedback they receive.

The tests are held in the month of April each year which gives ample time to both students and teachers to complete the portions.

Students in this age group truly begin to experience the ethos and vision of the school and their part in upholding it. They are given greater responsibility, and with this comes accountability. They begin to see themselves as role models for the younger students and they participate more in the daily lives of the Primary pupils.

We fully meet the aims of the CIE curriculum requirements for this age group, focusing our students to become successful, responsible and confident young people here at King’s College India . Everything that our teachers do has the sole focus of students achieving their continued growth, academically, physically and socially.

The Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is designed as a two-year curriculum programme leading to a Certificate which is internationally recognized by universities and employers worldwide as evidence of academic ability. The IGCSE years are Classes 9 and 10, with external examinations held in Class 10. It is a time which is critical for preparing the student for their next step, the A Level exams. By this age, our pupils are becoming leaders in the international school, fulfilling the roles of young adults. They get involved in their community through projects, while in their school time they are encouraged to pursue all the activities that are offered, at academic, sporting and personal levels all the while staying focused on their goals.

IGCSE is made up of compulsory core subjects which everyone studies, and a group of optional subjects. IGCSE pupils are expected to take at least 7 subjects and these are critical to a student’s opportunities in the future to attend a University. During this time our pupils remain focused on their studies to prepare for the final IGCSE examinations.

Science is offered to students through first-hand experience, at every stage, thus building on their natural curiosity and stimulating them to investigate and question.

– At the primary stage,  at KCI the child engages in joyfully exploring the world and harmonizing with it, thus acquiring the basic cognitive, psychomotor and language skills through observation, classification and inference. The child, then, moves on to learning through familiar experiences and engage in hands-on activities, like creating a working model of a windmill. At higher levels, the students engage in learning science as a composite discipline with more advanced tools.

– Issues concerning the environment and health (reproductive and  health) are an important component of learning through all stages of the curriculum.

–  At King’s College India, the curriculum is very mindful of the fact that children are natural scientists with endless questions about the world in which they live. Hands-on experiments will be conducted with materials from everyday life that will challenge the young scientists’ intellects and challenge them to explore their world.

Cambridge Secondary curriculum framework of Science covers four content areas:

  1. Scientific enquiry
  2. Biology
  3. Chemistry
  4. Physics.

The curriculum for language has evolved keeping in mind the sound principle that effective understanding and use of language(s) enables the child to make connections between ideas, people and things and to relate to the world around. It fully recognizes the inbuilt linguistic potential of a child and that bilingual proficiency raises the levels of cognitive growth, social tolerance, divergent thinking and scholastic achievement. In its design, language is not confined to the language classroom but cuts across all other disciplines thus making it an instrument for abstract thought and knowledge acquisition through literacy. The approach to language development is holistic with the focus on developing the basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and integrating language as a tool for learning, understanding and creative expression.

In Secondary, the Cambridge language curriculum is followed. Overreaching aim of which is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

Students are exposed to reading a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, including in particular whole books, short stories, poems and plays with a wide coverage of genres, historical periods, forms and authors.
