Soundproofing is any means of impeding sound propagation. There are several basic ways to reduce sound: increasing the distance between source and receiver, decoupling, using noise barriers to reflect or absorb the energy of the sound waves, using damping structures such as sound baffles for absorption, or using active antinoise sound generators.[1][2]
Acoustic quieting and noise control can be used to limit unwanted noise. Soundproofing can reduce the transmission of unwanted direct sound waves from the source to an involuntary listener through the use of distance and intervening objects in the sound path (see sound transmission class and sound reduction index).
Soundproofing can suppress unwanted indirect sound waves such as reflections that cause echoes and resonances that cause reverberation.
Sound-absorbing material controls reverberant sound pressure levels within a cavity, enclosure or room. Synthetic absorption materials are porous, referring to open cell foam (acoustic foam, soundproof foam). Fibrous absorption material such as cellulose, mineral wool, fiberglass, sheep's wool, are more commonly used to deaden resonant frequencies within a cavity (wall, floor, or ceiling insulation), serving a dual purpose along with their thermal insulation properties. Both fibrous and porous absorption material are used to create acoustic panels, which absorb sound reflections in a room, improving speech intelligibility.[3][4]
Porous absorbersPorous absorbers, typically open cell rubber foams or melamine sponges, absorb noise by friction within the cell structure.[5] Porous open cell foams are highly effective noise absorbers across a broad range of medium-high frequencies. Performance can be less impressive at lower frequencies. The exact absorption profile of a porous open-cell foam will be determined by a number of factors including cell size, tortuosity, porosity, thickness, and density.
The absorption aspect in soundproofing should not be confused with sound-absorbing panels used in acoustic treatments. Absorption in this sense refers to reducing a resonating frequency in a cavity by installing insulation between walls, ceilings or floors. Acoustic panels can play a role in treatment reducing reflections that make the overall sound in the source room louder, after walls, ceilings, and floors have been soundproofed.
Resonant absorbersResonant panels, Helmholtz resonators and other resonant absorbers work by damping a sound wave as they reflect it.[6] Unlike porous absorbers, resonant absorbers are most effective at low-medium frequencies and the absorption of resonant absorbers is matched to a narrow frequency range.
DampingDamping serves to reduce resonance in the room, by absorption or redirection through reflection or diffusion. Absorption reduces the overall sound level, whereas redirection makes unwanted sound harmless or even beneficial by reducing coherence. Damping can be separately applied to reduce the acoustic resonance in the air or to reduce mechanical resonance in the structure of the room itself or things in the room.

This private drum studio project began life not to appease irate neighbours, rather to maintain the sanity of family members exposed to regular loud drumming practice. An open stairwell together with an unenclosed 9 piece drum kit upstairs resulted in noise levels of 80 to 100 dBA in upstairs rooms and 70 to 80 dBA in living areas downstairs. After 4 years of disruption it was decided to demolish the existing single garage and build a new extended double garage with a music studio constructed inside the rear half of the extension. Despite excellent relations with adjacent neighbours and no formal or informal complaints of noise nuisance from drumming practice, the local council Development Application proved to be a difficult and demanding process. MUSIC NOISE ANNOYANCE CRITERIA The NSW Department of Environment and Conservation provide guidelines for domestic noise emissions (NSW DEC, 2006). These guidelines recognise the wide range in sensitivity of humans to noise annoyance situations and hence, rather than be prescriptive by specifying details of noise metrics, acceptance criteria or target noise limits; they define time restrictions where noise from various activities must not be audible inside neighbouring properties. For musical instruments these restrictions apply between midnight to 8.00am everyday. Rather than utilise these DEC guidelines, the local council sought to specify a condition requiring: “….measurement of background noise levels at the nearest neighbouring boundary, measured when the background noise is expected to be lowest.” “A noise goal of < 5 dBA over that background level.” BACKGROUND NOISE MEASUREMENTS Background noise measurements have been recorded using a Larson Davis LD700 Precision Sound Level Meter at two measurement positions on the boundary fence-line adjoining the nearest neighbour, on the western side of the property (Figure 1). MP1 is located at the fence-line closest to the front façade of the neighbours dwelling that is currently exposed to the highest noise levels from drumming practice. MP 2 is located on the boundary fence-line immediately adjacent the existing garage structure and closest to the rear deck of the neighbour’s property.
