About Dwarka

About Dwarka
Dwarka is derived from the word 'Dwar', meaning, "A Door". In ancient times, its flourishing port was considered to be a gateway to the main land. 'Ka', in Sanskrit, means 'Brahma'. Hence, the word 'Dwarka' literally means 'Gateway to Moksha' or 'The Door to Liberation'.
Dwarka was the adopted home and capital of Shri Krishna after he gave up Mathura. It is held in great esteem as a place of Hindu pilgrimage that it is considered to be one of the four principle holy places or 'Chardham'.
Dwarka was known as the city of Gold. Shree Krishna came here from Mathura along with some Yadav families and established his own empire in Dwarka.
Dwarka is in the extreme west of the Saurashtra peninsula on the Arabian Sea. It is a railway station on the Ahmedabad-Okha broad gauge line, about 137-kms from Jamnagar, 217 kms from Rajkot and 378 kms from Ahmedabad. A state highway with Jamnagar and Okha also connects it with Dwarka. The nearest airport is Jamnagar.
