The installation of Foam System is too complex and can only be done by Fire Fighting companies of repute. The fundamental of a Foam System to operate systematically is completely dependent on a through meticulous design, if the design is not proper then the entire system turns out to be a complete failure also, installation of such system requires project engineers with good experience capable of executing such complex systems.
How does the Fire Protection Foam System operate
Fuel, Heat and Air are the three elements form a triangle which is the basis of fire; it is also referred to as the Fire Triangle. If one of the elements is missing, the fire will not exist. Fire Protection Foam System, isolates the Air, from the fire or fuel which basically chokes the fire and kills it gradually as more Foam is applied to the fire.
When the Foam sprinkler detects that the fire is present, it is triggered. This causes the water to flow into the bladder tank. The foam concentrate, goes into the bladder tank via the proportioner. The proportioner regulates the desired percentage of foam to be mixed with water and the foam is formed when the foam concentrate and the water mixes in the right proportion.
The desired foam is then discharged under a required pressure as per the design standard directly on the fire, though the sprinkler. The foam covers the fuel like a blanked and isolates the Air thus breaking the Fire Triangle.
Types of Class ‘B’ Foams :
Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) : AFFF is a high quality foam, commonly used in, refineries, airports and manufacturing plants. They are available in 2, 4 and 6% that is for every 100 litres of water 2, 4 or 6 litres of foams are used in the proportioner.
High Expansion Foam: They are used in very large areas or where the height of the risk area is too high like warehouses and ships. It’s very effective, where spillage or a hydrocarbon fire might take place.
