What is CT Scanning of the Body?

Computed tomography, more commonly known as a CT or CAT scan, is a diagnostic medical test that, like traditional x-rays, produces multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body.

The cross-sectional images generated during a CT scan can be reformatted in multiple planes, and can even generate three-dimensional images. These images can be viewed on a computer monitor, printed on film or transferred to a CD or DVD.

CT images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels typically provide greater detail than traditional x-rays, particularly of soft tissues and blood vessels.

Using specialized equipment and expertise to create and interpret CT scans of the body, radiologists can more easily diagnose problems such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, appendicitis, trauma and musculoskeletal disorders.

What are some common uses of the procedure?
  • one of the fastest and most accurate tools for examining the chest, abdomen and pelvis because it provides detailed, cross-sectional views of all types of tissue.
  • used to examine patients with injuries from trauma such as a motor vehicle accident.
  • performed on patients with acute symptoms such as chest or abdominal pain or difficulty breathing.
  • often the best method for detecting many different cancers, such as lymphoma and cancers of the lung, liver, kidney, ovary and pancreas, since the image allows a physician to confirm the presence of a tumor and measure its size, precise location and the extent of the tumor\\\'s involvement with other nearby tissue.
  • an examination that plays a significant role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases that can lead to stroke, kidney failure or even death. CT is commonly used to assess for pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung vessels) as well as for aortic aneurysms.
  • invaluable in diagnosing and treating spinal problems and injuries to the hands, feet and other skeletal structures because it can clearly show even very small bones as well as surrounding tissues such as muscle and blood vessels.
    • lymphoma
    • neuroblastoma
    • kidney tumors
    • congenital malformations of the heart, kidneys and blood vessels
    • cystic fibrosis
    • complications of acute appendicitis
    • complications of pneumonia
    • inflammatory bowel disease
    • severe injuries
    • quickly identify injuries to the lungs, heart and vessels, liver, spleen, kidneys, bowel or other internal organs in cases of trauma.
    • guide biopsies and other procedures such as abscess drainages and minimally invasive tumor treatments.
    • plan for and assess the results of surgery, such as organ transplants or gastric bypass.
    • stage, plan and properly administer radiation treatments for tumors as well as monitor response to chemotherapy.
    • measure bone mineral density for the detection of osteoporosis.
  • In pediatric patients, CT is rarely used to diagnose tumors of the lung or pancreas as well as abdominal aortic aneurysms. For children, CT imaging is more often used to evaluate:

Physicians often use the CT examination to:

How should I prepare?

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your exam. You may be given a gown to wear during the procedure.

Metal objects, including jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures and hairpins, may affect the CT images and should be left at home or removed prior to your exam. You may also be asked to remove hearing aids and removable dental work. Women will be asked to remove bras containing metal underwire. You may be asked to remove any piercings, if possible.

Q. Isn't barium awful to taste?

Ans.No at CDC, it is pleasantly flavoured.

Q. How long does a barium test take to perform?

Ans.An upper G.I. series takes 30 minutes to 1hr. A full study takes 3-4 hours.

Q. In these days of hi-tech investigations, are X-rays getting redundant?

Ans.No, X-rays are a very cost effective means of diagnosis, particularly where diseases of chest, bones & joints are concerned

Q.When should a patient report for an HSG?

Ans.A patient should take an appointment for HSG between 6-8th day of her menstrual cycle. The first day of cycle is the day the lady begins her menstrual blood flow. Her periods should have stopped at least 2days before the HSG examination.

Q. What is an HSG examination?

Ans.It is one of the basic investigations for female infertility. It involves instillation of contrast through the mouth of the womb into the uterus & tubes, so that the tubes are well out lined & we can determine whether the tubes are blocked or no.At least one patent tube is essential for natural conception.

Q. Is HSG a painful procedure?

Ans.Yes, HSG is a painful procedure. However patients with low anxiety & good pain tolerance go through it with no difficulty. At CDC most of the cases are done under short duration anesthesia, under the care of trained anesthetist. It ensures patient comfort at a little extra cost

Preparations

It is advisable to take a mild purgative (Dulcolax) for X-ray of abdomen/ IVU/ .
For intravenous urography (IVU or IVP) 4 hours fasting is adequate.
Appointments are generally given in the morning.
It is advisable to take a mild purgative (Dulcolax) for a spine X-ray the night before in case of constipation to ensure adequate bowel preparation. This should not be taken however if appendicitis is suspected. Diabetic patients should take as early an appointment as possible and inform the centre of the same.
For a HSG (Hystero Salpingography) 4 hours of fasting is necessary. The X-ray should be performed on the 6th - 8 day of the cycle. The periods should have stopped at least 2days before HSG appointment. The lady should shave her private parts. It is advisable to come in comfortable clothing. Please bring along reports of any prior X-ray. X-rays can be harmful to the developing fetus in a pregnant lady. Therefore it is important for pregnant ladies to inform the doctor of their condition.

Color Doppler ultrasound is a medical imaging technique which is used to provide visualization of the blood flow, using color processing to add color to the image so that a doctor or care provider can clearly see what is happening inside the body. This technique requires the use of a high end ultrasound machine which is capable of color Doppler ultrasound, and can be performed in a hospital or clinic as an outpatient procedure. Having this imaging study performed is not usually painful, and the patient does not require sedatives.

FAQs

Q. What is sonography?

Ans. It is sonography done for better visualisation of uterus & ovaries in married women. A high-resolution endovaginal probe is inserted into the vagina for this examination. It is not painful. It is done as a routine at our centre as it is observed that at times even fairly prominent lesions can be missed if only trans-abdominal sonography is performed. It does nor require a full bladder.

Q. Is dating and weight estimation 100% accurate? Ans.Dating and weight estimation are just estimates based on statistical data of the baby size. It is not 100% accurate but predicts the dating and weight estimation up to +/- 15%.

Preparations

For sonography of Pelvis

Patient should consume 5-6 large glasses of water 1 hour prior to examination. Urine collects in the bladder over this time. Excessive water should not be consumed as it may lead to vomiting and does not serve the purpose.
Full bladder permits better evaluation of the urinary bladder itself, the prostate gland and seminal vesicles in males and the uterus, ovaries and adnexa in females.
Gall Bladder study requires 6 hrs fasting. During the fasting period patient may consume water & fruit juice All other examinations do not require any specific preparation.

Pregnancy Sonography

Full bladder is required upto 10 - 12 weeks of pregnancy only if abdominal ultrasound is being done. At Chopra diagnostics Sector -31 all patients for early pregnancy upto 10 wks are studied by transvaginal sonography so there is no need for a full bladder.
There are no clothing restrictions. However It is advisable to wear something loose and comfortable.
It is advisable to come 10-15 minutes prior to the appointment to ensure smooth and relaxed procedure.

For KUB Sonography

No fasting required
Drink water as advised for pelvic ultrasound
Have full-bladder
