The DVR is replaced with an NVR (network video recorder), which in some cases is just software since it doesn't need to convert analog to digital. Video footage can then be stored on new or existing network RAID drives as directed by the NVR software.

As the name suggests, a stand-alone DVR, also known as Non-PC-based Digital Video Recorder refers to a Recorder that includes multiple components and facilities into a single box. This box can include different boards, power supply sources, central processing unit (CPU) and other DVR-related services. In general a standalone DVR is a hardware solution designed to record video in a digital format to a disk drive (similar to those used in personal computers), SD memory cards, USB flash drives or other local or networked mass storage devices. If the DVR’s hard drive should fail, the worst that could happen would be the loss of stored video. The DVR’s operating system is stored in the hardware, not on the hard drives (embedded within the IC chip) - it is a permanent feature that can’t be tampered or modified in any way, besides, as the standalone DVRs cannot be windows based – they are far less vulnerable to viruses and hackers attacks. Standalone DVRs is less expensive.

A network video recorder (NVR) is a software program that records video in a digital format to a disk drive, USB flash drive, SD memory card or other mass storage device. An NVR contains no dedicated video capture hardware. However, the software is typically run on a dedicated device, usually with an embedded operating system. Alternatively, to help support increased functionality and serviceability, standard Linux and Windows operating systems are used with standard Intel processors and video management software. An NVR is typically deployed in an IP video surveillance system.

Network video recorders are distinct from digital video recorders (DVR) as their input is from a network rather than a direct connection to a video capture card or tuner. Video on a DVR is encoded and processed at the DVR, while video on an NVR is encoded and processed at the camera, then streamed to the NVR for storage or remote viewing.
