Roller Burnishing Tools

1. Construction and working Principles :Roller Burnishing tools incorporate a planetary system of hardened, tapered rolls which are evenly spaced by a retaining cage. When a tool engages the workpiece a hardened mandrel inversely to the taper of the rolls, forces them against the surface of the workpiece.2. Self Feed Design :The rolls axes are set at a slight helix angle to the axis of the mandrel and workpiece. This angular relationship causes the rolls to move in a helical path around the workpiece surface, thereby establishing a self feeding characteristic in the tool.3. Non - Feed Design :In application where a non - feeding tool is required such as in close approaches to shoulders or in full bottoming, the tool is constructed with the rolls axes parallel to the axis of the mandrel. With this construction, the tool depends on machine feed to advance along the workpiece.4. Constant Diameter :The interaction of the helix angle and the inversely tapered rolls and mandrel creates the pressure required for roller burnishing. The pressure is generated because the mandrel tends to overtake the rolls as the tool feeds along with workpiece. This tendency is restricted by a stop on the mandrel which establishes a fixed axial relationship between the rolls and mandrel. Since the rolls / mandrel relationship is constant, the tool maintains a uniform diameter during its complete pass.5. Automatic Tool Release :The inverse tapers of the rolls and a mandrel provide the tool with a self-releasing feature. When the advance of the tool into the workpiece is stopped, the rollers continue to feed in a helical path. In so going, they move forward on the mandrel to a point where its diameter is smaller, and the burnishing pressure is released. Only a small movement is required for the tool to release at which point it can be easily withdrawn from the workpiece.

Burnishing Tool cold works metal by process of Burnishing Hardened and highly polished precision tapered rolls rotating around and bearing on an inversely tapered mandrel, apply steady rolling pressure against the work surface. The high peaks of prepared surface (generally 80 to 120 micro inches or 2 to 3 micrometers) are flown into the microscopic cavities by the action of rolls under pressure from the tool. This gives surface finish after Burnishing up to 0.05 to 0.4 Micron Ra.
The tools are available from ID 5 to 350 mm, for thru or blind holes, for depth 30 mm onwards in the step of 50mm.

Roller Burnishing is a Super-finishing process. It is a Cold Working process which produces a fine surface finish by the planetary rotation of hardened rollers over a bored or turned metal surface. Since all machined surfaces consist of a series of peaks and valleys of irregular height and spacing, the plastic deformation created by roller burnishing is a displacement of the material in the peaks which cold flows under pressure into the valleys. Tool set up

The diamond stem is mounted in the holder under spring tension with an approximate 0.250" override. It is suggested when setting up a job, you bring the diamond against the work without the spindle running, feed the tool into the work until you compress the spring approximately 0.230", then back off the tool approximately 0.031" to allow for a free float of the diamond in the holder. Do not compress diamond stem and spring until solid. Diamond failure may occur.

Since the tool is spring loaded, it is necessary that you feed the tool against the surface being finished and remove the tool from the surface being finished. Do not try to feed the tool on or off the work or do not try to use the tool for finishing intermittent surfaces.

Part preparation


A finish of approximately 80 to 100 RMS. should be machined or ground on the part prior to burnishing. This can usually be accomplished with a cutting tool having a 1/32" radius on the cutting edge with a feed rate of 0.006" to 0.008" per revolution. For cast steel parts, a slightly larger radius and a slower feed is recommended.

Machine feed & speed setting


Usually the Diamond Tool is fed at one half the feed of the cutting tool although the finish required will have some bearing as to the correct feed needed to produce satisfactory results. To produce a 5 to 8 micro inch finish with the Diamond Burnishing Tool, set the machine at a feed rate of approximately 0.003" to 0.004" per revolution with a speed up to 750 surface feet a minute or less, depending upon the machine capability. Be sure to start the rotation of the spindle and the feed at the same time. If you start the spindle running and do not engage the feed, the tool will leave a mark on the part.

Coolant required


A coolant of any type that is on the machine may be used. Do not run the tool without coolant for additional or more specific information, please furnish print with complete details and, if possible, proposed part preparation.
